So, I'm at the point where I am looking at forums to find something that doesn't fall specifically into any of those categories mentioned in the subject line. I am especially fond of psychological, mystery and philosophical anime. However, I find it off-putting when studios take a cheap route and decide that tons'o blood and nudity makes it fall under one of the mentioned categories. I am not limited to the previously mentioned genre, and would not mind an action/adventure, but if it does, it should definitely not be a moe, ecchi or harem.

To bring it into perspective, I've compiled a list of things I have watched that I enjoyed. Hopefully someone can recommend something similar if not better.

As you can see the things I find most appealing fall in a either a SoL that's mostly comedy shorts, or a philosophical/Psychological with some Action genre thrown in.

EDIT: I would prefer to avoid films. If it's a trilogy then by all means post them, I just can't immerse myself in 2 hour long films versus say a 24 episode anime. (mostly has too do with the detail the studio goes into a work. More time means more room for development)

I went into the thread to say Shinsekai Yori, but I'm pleasantly surprised I don't have to. That said, I'm watching Monster right now, and while I can't speak for it's quality past the first 25 episodes, so far it's very interesting and doesn't have any moe, fanservice, or harems.

I would suggest Clannad and Clannad: After Story. It has slice of life in it that with story arcs involving different girls and their lives. While there are a few girls who like the main protagonist, it is not a harem, and it focuses mostly on drama and comedy. I'd suggest watching a few episodes to get an idea about it, but I think you will like it. If you end up liking that there is also Kanon and Air made by the same studios. All three are based off visual novels.

If you like Psychological with some action, you will might like Higerashi, both seasons. Problem is that there is quite a bit of blood at times, and there might be have stuff that can be considered moe, but the moe isn't heavy.

Really, Clanaad? I remember that one being filled to the brim with moe, unless I'm thinking of the wrong thing.

I watched Toradora around the same time I watched Clanaad, and it's the best way I've seen a high school romance treat relationships. I also can't stand moe, but Toradora not only doesn't do moe, but it also has a great cast of characters all with their own arcs that just do so well together. Even if you don't usually do high school romances, I highly recommend. I didn't either in anime until I saw Toradora.

Thinking about it, Clannad is a bit Moe, but when people give examples of Moe, it seems like Clannad isn't that bad. To be fair, my range of Anime isn't huge, so I don't get bothered as much, and don't notice it as much. There is one or two characters that can be heavy on the Moe side. I think it would be worth trying an episode or two, or look at screen shots to get an idea. Toradora is another good example of a high school romance with not huge amount of Moe.

I believe Fate Stay Night and Fate Zero fit what you want, but I haven't seen it to say otherwise. The Monogatari stuff I believe you could like, it does have some parts that are fan servicy, but there isn't anything Moe I remember, and it's not a harem.

FMA Brotherhood

Well I am probably one of the biggest fans of the original Fullmetal Alchemist there is so I'd definitely give that a watch. It goes in a little more detail in the themes that are present in Brotherhood a little more effectively in my opinion. As well as the fact that the Homunculi are far more interesting in the original show, again this is just my opinion.

There is also Wolf's Rain. It has a lot of really good action and deals with themes that I personally find to be very fascinating. That and the dub for the show is nigh flawless in execution of dialogue and the creation of wonderful characters.

Berserk: If you can get over the baaaaaaaaaaad animation this show is really, really, REALLY good. It would be my all time favourite if not for the ending and the animation work in the show. Set in a medieval Europe it is a tragedy with very complex and memorable characters and deals with themes of fate, ambition, hubris, sacrifice and war.

EDIT: Oh by the way Happy first post!

Mado-- oh, wait, you saw that already...

Well, speaking of Urobuchi, you could try Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom and Fate/Zero if you haven't.

And if you haven't already, you could check out some of Satoshi Kon's work, like Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, and Paranoia Agents. That's literally all his work, unless you include some shorts and some manga.

Other than that, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade is quite good, and so is Mushi-shi. Also, try The Twelve Kingdoms.

Mushi-shi. It's a fantasy anime set in an older era of Japan, though the main character wears modern clothes for some reason.

Ginko is a "Mushi-shi" who travels around to investigate and find out more about the "Mushi" a folklore-ish form of life that is neither plant nor animal. In the process, he also lends a helping hand to people who face problems with supernatural occurrences which may be due to the Mushi.

RahXephon, it's a super robot anime that can be summed up as "Evangelion if it made sense". There's plenty of mystery in it as the characters try to find out what the aliens are and how they are connected to humanity, all while conspiracy abounds within Earth's forces.

One thing that's funny though is they used the Mayan calendar before it was cool (the show is from about 2000/2001ish) so the date is off by about a week for when it happened.

Steins;Gate. It's a fun adventure story that follows a group of scientists that manage to build a time machine out of their microwave. Unfortunately, a super-secret corporation trying to control the future doesn't appreciate their actions. It's filled with intrigue, twists, and lessons about consequences. It can be either sad, funny, or exciting at different times, and I rather enjoyed it!

Alright I have a question. Is nudity itself ok or are you against it entirely because Ghost in the Shell is insanely good but I know the movie has quite a bit of nudity and the first season of Stand Alone Complex has a little bit of fanservice with the main characters outfit but Jesus Christ is that a great series [except Arise, fuck Arise]

Since you mentioned Samurai Champloo but no Cowboy Bebop, watch that as well. Yes, there's a buxom lady in a skimpy outfit but I don't think the show makes a big deal about it. The movie has a "shower scene" but otherwise the show's pretty clean-cut.

Boku no Pico

It's nigh impossible to have zero "moe, fanservice" content and not coming out to be pretentious. In my case, learning to compromise and accept things will result in a better experience.

Go for Steins;Gate, or Mushishi series.

Wait didn't Ego Proxy had abit of fanservice? I remember that female character was taking a bath/ shower before that thing came in to attack her.

OT- Let see-
Shirokuma Cafe
Ghost in the Shell: SAC (ok one or two time the Major did had to wear a fancy dress and also NO the clothing she wore in the first SAC in my view doesn't count as fanservice).
Cat Shit One
The Big O
Tiger and Bunny
