Waiting for this game to be $5 on steam before i consider buying it. Seriously. Sub par game with 15 years in the making. Screw. That. I can't believe you got suckered into buying a CE edition.

The absolute biggest irony of this all: Since release, Fox News hasn't said a thing.
IIRC Fox was part of development. Wouldn't surpise me if they are caning the news so the can recoup there investment.

As for the game I found two part that where really annoying. The second driving part. It was just too long sure it was broken up between driving and hunting for gas rinse and repeat.

I enjoyed the game tbh. The regeneration health works well when you actually get a sizable health bar a bit further in to the game. In the demo you have the minimum health and damn you where puny. The two weapon limit isn't that much of a biggy sure I would have liked it a bit more like Serious Sam in that respect; though it works well enough.

The real issue is it isn't a new game. It's very much the same game that they where working on in 97-99. 3d realms lost people then caned people but in the end those people picked up the torch of the game they'd worked on years before.

It reaks in places of a HL2 wannabe but it has it's own merits. The game is a nostalgia trip in may places as well and it knows it. Movement and animation are very reminiscent of Duke Nukem 3D. And it really doesn't feel too different having recently played both.

I might be in the minority here but it feels generic and the same because it was one of the games to set those very things up. It subverts some tropes quite rather amusingly. It's not a master peice but its more fun that some of the newer CoD's SP has been for me. It's better than Bulletstrom in the one liners department.

As some have pointed out the jokes are old but then the SP was pretty much done in 08. The game rides on Valve and Portal refrances in places or at least has them.

You bought the console version? Oh boy.... You know the console versions of PC games are always inferior, why even bother?

The PC version is allright, I'm pretty disappointed too though, since it's too much like a modern shhoter, and not old school. I guess old school shooters don't work on consoles, and consoles are simply too big a market to ignore.

My major gripe is the sniper rifle...... What?! Duke Nukem doesn't need a fucking sniper rifle! Sniper rifles are for pussies, Duke Nukem would never use that thing, he'd get right in the middle of the action and blow shit up with middle and close range weapons.

The moral of this story: modern shooters suck and never buy console FPSs.

I'm currently at my girlfriends house, my Balls of Steel edition waiting for me to return home.

So I have no say on what the game is like at this current moment.

That being said though, How many of the people here went into this game with 12 years of expectations?
Seriously now people have the Fable games taught us all nothing?

Of course Duke Nukem Forever isn't going to be as good as you all Imagined it would be.

I'm not defending it, like I said, my copy is still in it's packaging, two miles away.
So I don't have a clue about the quality right now.

But even before I go home, I'm not entering that game with any expectations, I've purposely avoided video content, hype and anything else that would sway my overall opinion of game.

Because I think a game needs to stand up on it's own to impress me.
Having pre-conceived notions about it isn't helping matters.

Also I've learned my hard lesson from buying every Fable game released on consoles thus far...

Maybe Duke Nukem won't be a great game, or maybe it'll be the first FPS in years I'll actually enjoy, I'm happy to say that I honestly have no idea yet.

And I personally think that losing the expectations is a mind-set a lot of gamers could stand to adopt.

Maybe that way we'd start appreciating games for their actual worth, as opposed to what we thought they were worth.

TL;DR: Stop judging it based on what you thought it was going to be like, 12 years of hype helps no one, not even Duke.

[Brief edit: It's come to my attention that this post somehow wasn't very specific on who it was aimed at, If you, like me haven't/didn't go into DNF with any prior expectations, then fine, go ahead and enjoy/hate it if that's what you want to do.

Just please don't quote me telling me you played it without expectations, because it's pretty obvious I wasn't aiming it at you guys... I mean really.

Thats exactly the thing. I have never played the old Duke games, I never had special expectations, just professional standards. I'm not looking at it through rose tinted glasses. I was the exact type of person it could have impressed, and it failed miserably.

After watching TotalBiscuit's WTF video, even if it was the first hour, how I wish First Person Shooters was about the shooting part rather than the gimmicky turret/driving/cutscene section. I always enjoyed watching gameplay video, but this one, bored me to tears.

This wasn't aimed at you then...
Have fun being entitled to your opinion.

Wait what ... DNF is totally a "modern shooter."
From linear levels to regenerating health to the 2 weapon limit to the hour freakin' long tutorial that's nothing but handholding ...

How is anything in this game old school?!

OP is just trying to do Yahtzee's shtick here. Uninteresting, erudition plagued by a lack of owning one's own personality. You're drawing your opinionated statements and harsh rhetoric from Yahtzee, and you've not displayed any original level of thought.

Stick to watching videos done by professionals and go back to playing Call of Duty. You've not got much of a valid opinion, and a game like that is more at your level.

You're absolutely correct that we should enter with no notions of what it should be like. However, I didn't buy into any hype, only watched one or two videos, and was only mildly interested. I didn't expect much from the demo, and I didn't get much.

Once again, I refer to Yahtzee's chart.

I just hope it does well enough for a sequel - which I think if given the chance to make from the bottom up Gearbox could make a fantastic DN game.
You mean 12 years is not enough time?

I don't know what I'm supposed to be getting from this little chart other than I was... Right?

Are people glossing over the part where I said that I haven't played it and that they're free to not like it if they want?

Considering Gearbox got the game after years of 'abuse' by the original developers I'd say they did a fairly decent job.

What GB SHOULD have done was use the DN universe and built a game from the ground up...but they didn't.

The real Duke Nukem didn't need 3D. And he had to get close to the enemies because otherwise they'd go off the side of the screen and he couldn't see them any more.

Also: Aye. Gearbox appeared happiest releasing information that would generate controversy and relying on how Duke was such an 'extreme' character, which is usually a warning sign that the game itself is not that good.

So anyone who thrashes a game in an extended text whilst throwing in a few jokes is automatically trying to ape Yahtzee?

And based on this amazingly deep insight, I must automatically like Call of Duty because Call of Duty is the cool new thing to hate now because its dumb and stupid and herpy derpy herp derp?

Yahtzee isn't king of the universe as you might think, not everyone who hates things hates them just to try and polish his balls.

In fact, why dont you do a forum topic search for "I think I'm officially sick of Yahtzee". I made it just a few days ago because I'm getting SICK of his style.

Jesus christ I seriously cannot put into words everything that is wrong with what you have just said.

The funniest part of this entire thing will be if FOX doesn't even bother to mention it.
Because it sucks so hard that nobody really cares, and thus doesn't stir controversy.

If Duke Nukem can't get conservative activists pissed off then DUKE IS DEAD.

Amazingly well written review. I haven't played the full game, but God I was so fucking dissapointed by the demo. And you're right, the (small) driving part of the demo is so fucking broken, I had to retry like 3 times, because I jumped in what I belived to be the right path, and then again, because I didn't used the boost.

And the 2 weapons... 2. Fuckng. Weapons. I'm glad I didn't spent any money in this game, I only got the demo access because I already had Borderlands in my Steam account, wich is, by miles, a much, much better game.

This game belongs to 2002, or 2006 at the very least. And still be entirely crushed by BioShock and anything released at that time that's a thousand times better.

Heck, even the '96 Duke still is a lot much better than this.
