Right... So what he should have done is absolutely nothing, is that what you'd suggest?
If we don't retaliate to other people doing wrong by us, then they have no reason to stop. People need to know there are consequences to their actions. I can pretty much guarantee the dickhead who did this will have a reason to rethink trying it a second time.
You can argue that the reaction was too drastic, but to say he should have done nothing is ridiculous. Thinking like that leads to being a door mat for people to walk all over and scrape the shit off their shoes.
When in any of those posts did we say "he should do nothing"?
You're assuming that the only way to respond to a situation is to be a complete asshole or a complete pushover.

There is something known as addressing the issue like a mature human being by confronting the other person and asking that they stop.

If they still act like a jerk then do whatever you want, but I stand by what I said.

It seemed to be implied since you never gave any alternative paths in your initial posts.
As for confronting them, a few things need to be taken into consideration. Knumpify apparently didn't have time to have his clothes dry in time for work, its safe to assume he didn't have time to wait for the culprit to show up. Also the response to asking them to stop is almost certainly going to be laughter or apathy, with the added bonus of a punch in the face if they're that kind of person.

I agree with the idea of acting like a mature person, when the other person has earned that respect. However since they didn't walk up to him and say:
"Hey I'm in a rush and don't have any change, so I'm going to take your clothes out and put mine in."
I wouldn't bother showing them that level of respect.
And being picked on throughout life has taught me that I suck in times of confrontation, more so when violence is involved. I wouldn't want to give the other person the satisfaction of hearing me stumble over my words or getting to push me around while I do nothing.

Though to be honest I am better now than I use to be. You kinda learn to speak up and not act all meek when you work in retail for a while. Not sure about violence though, as the last encounter I had was a customer saying how he'd beat me up if we weren't in the middle of a busy store. Being on duty I couldn't exactly say "bring it on *****"... I hate people like that. Customers constantly getting away with treating us like shit probably alters my views on this situation too. I don't like seeing people get away with things so a revenge story in which the person deserved it is always something I like to see.

If a person doesn't have the courage to stand up for themselves (and I mean so in a mature fashion, not in some backwards revenge scheme), then that's their own personal fault. Besides, you don't have to be a pushover when approaching the other person.

You can simply say, "I don't appreciate it when you do _____. Don't do it in the future please. How would you like it if that happened to you?"
Most of the time when you ask people a question it forces them into a different standpoint.

If they continue to be a jerk then by all means, don't just let them walk all over you.

But nothing excuses not taking the higher ground first. If people simply make knee jerk reactions to every situation because they are too afraid to simply confront the issue, then it will be an endless cycle that continues to escalate.

As a fellow person who has been taken advantage of, trust me, I know where you are coming from.

You're probably gonna start a chain of back and forth revenge if you keep it up but I'd be lying if I said I didn't think it was awesome.
Yeah, Ulty's got it right. Oh I'm such a hypocrite but I laughed my ass off when I read this. And then immediately went "You shouldn't have done that, OP."

Anyway. Yeah, awesome, but that was a total asshole move.

I live in an apartment building. I share a total of 4 washers and 4 dryers with 80 other tenants, so it's safe to say there's a pretty good fight for them. I get my chef whites into the dryer this morning, which i needed for work that day, and paid for 68 mins of dry time. I come back down to find my damp load of whites on top of the dryer and a nice warm load of darks in my dryer, on my dime. I't now too late to dry my clothes before work. Thoroughly pissed off, I take a pure bleach stain pen (an industrial strength bleach stick, kitchen use only, this shit will eat through t-shirts) and EMPTY it on the load of darks. jeans, shirts, bras, underwear, socks, I coat everything. It's starting to eat and strip colour out of the clothes instantly. Feeling a little better, I take my laundry up to my apartment, hang it to dry, and post the event here.

Just looking back, what do you guys think? too far? justified?
I have no remorse either way, just wondering how much of an asshole I seem like today.
That is an excellent revenge and its made even funnier because somewhere in your building a woman is walking around with barely any clothes on!

Deny all knowledge of how it happened and silently snigger whenever you see them. I think funny as :)

I would say that it is mostly justified, but be wary now because the person is going to want revenge on you for what you did.

Even I'll say its a bit extreme, but they also put themselves in a fairly 'deserving of something horrible' position there. I probably would've just dumped them all on the floor and walked away, or kicked the dryer to its highest if it were possible on it, assuming it had levels for different kinds of clothes/materials.

A trade school I went to a couple of years back was kind of set up like that. There were about 600 kids in the dorms and only 6 washers and 8 dryers. I usually did my laundry on the weekends when most of the other students went home.

I never trusted really trusted anyone there except two or three people so whenever I had to do laundry I took a book with me and waited for it to get done.

On Topic: What that person did was bad. Taking your clothes out and putting theirs in is just plain rude. But, what you did was not right either. Yes, revenge at times feels good but the consequences could come back to haunt you later on.

I approve, but as stated, that may have been slightly too far. I see it as basically the equivalent of someone punching you in the face, so you pull out a crowbar and whop them one across the nose. Justifiable, but a little too extreme too quickly. Personally, I probably would've just taken their clothes and dumped them in whatever dumpster happened to be handy, with a note on the dryer directing them to said dumpster.

Then if it happened again, I would have gone for the bleach.

You definitely did the right thing though.

The vast majority of people who would pull something as described in the OP won't really care if you confront them. They'll make all the right noises, but as soon as they need a machine, they'll do it again. The only way to ensure they stop is to ensure there is a punishment that fits the act. The OP's response was a bit extreme, but not outside the bounds of reason.

Verbal confrontation does, in the vast majority of cases, nothing useful. Hell, there's a decent chance it would make you more of a target than anything else. The only way to make it stop is to respond.

I love hearing of things like this, when dicks get what they deserve and more. They totally deserved to have their clothes destroyed. I don't think they could show much more disrespect, or selfishness.

It takes a particular type of asshole to do something like this, I'm rather delighted that you reacted the way you did haha, I'm betting they may think twice before being an asshat =D

OT: I approve wholeheartedly and think you are awesome :D

While I can't approve of it, being "destruction of property" and all that, I also can't say that I wouldn't have done the same thing to such blasted petty thief.

Retaliation seldom leads anywhere though (at least not if the person in question knows who did it), you may end up in a "sock war" with lots of laundry casualties.
