I've been following this game called "Blade Kitten" for a while since it was announced. Though a little generic looking, I like the art and character design. So when I saw it for presale on Steam today for 15$ I was really happy, but then I decided to look online for a review. Most gaming websites don't have one yet (THAT'S A BAD SIGN), and the only ones I found were really negative or seemingly biased. I'm pretty bummed now and I probably won't get the game... unless of course I see some good reviews in the coming days.

So I ask you, Escapist,
What was the last game you looked forward to, but then it got bad reviews, making you change your mind and get bummed out?

None because i don't follow reviews like the people writing are some god and we have to take their word as law.

Spore.

I was looking forward to it ever since a friend told me about it 3 years ago or so. And it sucked ass.

True be told none i don't really bother to look at reviews nowadays but the few that i did really didn't change my mind all to much.

The last i did read was siren: blood curse for the ps3 it said it was bland and boring i thought it would be awosome and tryed it and loved it. Don't lission to reviews because nowadays they can't really be trusted all that much.

OT/ also i think this game looks awosome i can't wait to play it.

...Reviews have a pretty skewed view of reality. ...I've never read a review and changed my mind about a game.

...I have however watched a gameplay video...and changed my mind about a game.

I had this reaction to Metroid: other M. it looked awesome and I was all set to buy it... until I read reviews and heard the story (Which turns Samus into a broken, whining, self-loathing, insult to women, who can't even use weapons until her boyfriend tells her it's ok... WHO THOUGHT THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA!?!?!?)I am disgusted by what was done to such a great character.
It's strange but I don't even care if the gameplay is good or not, I just don't want Samus to be a symbol of the worst thing to come from men writing female characters.

ok nerd rage over. sorry you had to see that.

I think I'm going to echo Spore here. I was really hoping it'd be this big epic huge journey from tiny organism to space faring race but in reality it was just a huge mess with this incredibly boring and incessantly annoying space section at the end.

*sigh* and I'd had such high hopes for it.

Reviews are no more than published opinions.

I've played games with great reviews that I didn't particulary like (Halo 3, Dragon Age: Origins, Red Dead Redemption).

I've played games with not so great reviews that I loved (Dead Rising, Earth Defence Force: 2017, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood).

Play and like the games you want to play and like.

You don't have to revere the review writers as gods and take their word as law. Reading multiple reviews from reliable sources can help you to form your own opinion about a game you're unsure about buying before you go and drop hard earned money on it.

As for me the last game that a review helped to put me off of was C&C 4. To be fair I already wasn't going to buy the game based on all the information that I'd been reading before the game was released and I just read the reviews to see how bad it really was.

Naughty Bear.

I was looking forward to that game a lot. Then I read the reviews and got sad.

Then I said to myself "fuck those guys", bought the game anyway and to this day I still have a lot of fun with it.

Mafia 2. I played the demo, thought it was awsome. but it has gotten not so good reviews from some people. I will probably forget and buy it.

Fracture, it ended up being average and I found it about 2 months ago for 8 bucks, and well... they were right, glad I didn't buy it for full price.

I rarely buy games nowadays, mostly rent them, so I like to play games that interest me. I also try to not watch reviews until after I play the game, a big reason is because I go in with my own enthusiasm, and also it may contain spoilers to the game and ruin my experience a bit

Nothing, seriously go get the game, yeah reviews are there to give you an informed idea of what you're getting but if you were really psyched for it then just get it and decide for yourself.

I've heard no actual news on Sonic Colours, admittedly the only games journalisim I follow are ZP and PC Gamer, and my mind is telling me it'll suck, but look at it! Only Sonic and Tails, you're back to saving cute creatures, they give you Mario style power-ups and Robotnik is trying to take over the world... by building A THEME PARK IN SPACE!

I can't be the only one who looks at this and has some of their cynicisim dissapear

I thought about getting Grandia 3, but upon hearing everyone's thoughts that it was the weakest in the series, I didn't get it.

a review is only good if you agree with it, so i suggest you try the game and see if you like it, who knows maybe its amazing?
