[HEADING=2]Tome of the Ancients[/HEADING]

It's pretty easy to forget how things start. Can you remember a day where 3D games were the minority? I remember those days, and I look back on them very fondly. I had hoped I was not alone, therefore decided why not combine my favorite hobbies? So, in honor of that, I want a review contest about old games.

[HEADING=3]Information[/HEADING]
A 500 - 1,500 word review on a game that came on or before the year 1991.

[HEADING=3]Entry Rules[/HEADING]
[li]Must submit interest by 11:59 (GMT) on May 5th.[/li]
[li]Must submit articles by 11:59 (GMT) on May 17th. (Deadline changed.)[/li]
[li]Room for 0 other judges. [small]Will admit on a first come, first serve basis.[/small][/li]
[li]Reviews can be for any platform, including arcades, PCs, or home consoles.[/li]
[li]Reviews must be video games.[/li]
[li]Only one review per entrant.[/li]

[HEADING=3]Judge Information[/HEADING]
Note, that judges will be required to make notes for every review read, will score to the contest's criteria, and will not be told whose review is whose until the end of the contest.
Judges: NewClassic, Labyrinth, Danzorz, ultimatechance, Fightgarr, mjhhiv
Participants: Inverse Skies, The Necroswanson, Lord Krunk, scotth266, Sighh, Dirk45, Hey Joe, SayAnything, Woe is You, joethekoeller, RAKtheUndead, pigeon_of_doom

[HEADING=3]F.A.Q.[/HEADING]
Q: Must the games be played on the original console, or is emulation acceptable?
A: Either will work, though keep in mind emulation rarely reflects the original audio correctly.

Q: Can we post video/audio/flash segments in lieu of written reviews?
A: Afraid not. Since not everyone has the capability, we can't allow it for everyone. Sorry.

I'll be in for this, it'll give me something to have a crack at before Lvl64 comes back with another topic to review. I need the practice as well, so count me in.

All right, I wasn't even born in 1991, but I'm sure there are games a-plenty with which I can review.

I'll give my word when I've found a game to review.

Ok, I'm in on this round. Who wouldn't jump at the chance to review a classic?

Count me in, if you're running the contest & judging how will you be able to blind judge reviews? Seems tricky!

Yeah, I'll take a crack at this one. Need an excuse to review something which doesn't cost $100.

I did a bit of research, and I have concluded this:

Consider me in. I'll have my review in as soon as I can. Assuming that I don't receive a mother-load of homework when I go to school tomorrow.

Just a quick question. Must the games be played on the original console, or is emulation acceptable? I'm interested, but it'd be easier (and faster) for me to play through a console game than tackling the original Monkey Island or another PC game of that era. Although anything that gets me to finally try and play Monkey Island cannot be a bad thing.

Keep in mind you have until the Ides of May. That said, you're welcome to emulate or play on the original. The only thing I'm going to opt to say in favor of original console is that audio emulation is imperfect on just about every emulator and game I've tried. Most don't have large music section, but this could make or break music games and the like.

Honestly, though, you're welcome to do so. So long as you don't mind the audio, then have at it.

Ok, usually with games this old the audio problems are only minor imperfections anyway. I was just wondering if the completely different controls I will have to use would invalidate some comments about gameplay I might make. Also, the sharper resolution will probably make the games look worse. I'll probably do a PC game anyway if I enter the competition, but I just wanted to know if I had the option.

Also, am I the only one who thinks that maybe starting a new thread for each competition (after the next one has been decided) might be a good idea? This could become quite a messy thread over time.

I'm more than willing to judge if you need them.
I'm not quite witty enough on paper to actually submit review these days.

Same, count me in if there is still room. Judging the last competition was really enjoyable and I'd love to be a part of this one.

I'll enter the competition and see if I can defend my #2 spot.

Oh, shameless self-promotion...

Sounds fun!
