No one's mentioned it yet? Seriously?

The Water Temple from OoT. Everything's a breeze for the entire game, and then BAM! Lowering/raising water levels, going all the way to the clothing menu to change into your iron boots, and worst of all, being able to get yourself stuck forever if you do things wrong with absolutely no warning that such a thing was even possible.

Still haven't beaten it.
you are not alone, i hate that place XD never finished majoras mask because of it, did manage to get through OoT but now i hate water temples.

I know this'll sound INCREDIBLY weak in comparison to BattleToads (yes, I played it when I was 6, beat the first level, got crushed by the second, and never played it again), but:

CoD4 on Veteran. Some levels I can manage (well, the SAS ones) but I cry at the American ones. TOO MANY FREAKING ARABS.

Trying to counter with the Hidden Blade on Assassin's Creed 1. Granted, countering with the sword would be much easier, but it doesn't guarantee a one=hit kill, so I tend to neglect it. Problem is, the window of opportunity to counter is VERY small, and failing means losing a quarter of your health because your opponents are slashing at you without giving you a chance.

That's it, for now.

Psychonauts. Oh my god that starts out just challenging, but as soon as you get to the end it's a lesson in controler snapping frustration.

Infamous got kind of amped up. There were noticeable jumps in difficulty from island to island and the last just goes "AHAHAF**KYOUDIEDIEDIE" nuts a few times. Then there's Kessler.

Overlord: RH got a bit preposterous when Kahn made the scene, moreso when you start venturing to the underworld. In the beginning, I stood back giving orders. In hell, I found myself (about as upgraded as possible) doing damn near all of the fighting while my worthless minions (kept around only to carry things and open paths) stood back picking fleas off eachother.

Dragon Age: a mage with cone of cold can be greatly helpful, even the Archdemon freezes.

Bayonetta on Normal to Bayonetta on Hard.

WTF?! I can't get past level 3...

Hard to Climax isn't that bad I hear, because you're used to survival from hard.

F-zero Gx. Story mode. Very hard difficulty.

I still have that tunnel bit burnt into my brain. Also the only game so ridiculously hard that I still dedicated to finishing it.

I found a very evil and easy to do this, jump in the water wait for the "No your not allowed to swim here robot" come and quickly jump out then do a dark attack as dark jack ( X and []) and it will kill the robot thus letting swim past all those guards.

That rail-shooter sequence in Jak 2, the one where you actually drive along a rail, it was easy enough on the first play through but when you play it on the cheater 'hard' mode (can't remember the exact name of it), it was close to impossible because codes didn't have any effect.

STALKER has a ridiculous difficulty curve for first time players. It's like no other FPS out there and the standerd FPS tactics don't work. Spray n' Pray and your toast...in fact, every time you miss, you come closer to getting spread across the Zone like a cheap paste.
Go play on master difficulty, and try avoiding the anomalies to get the good artefacts. Let alone the fucking bandits... With their INCREDIBLE grenade throwing 'skillz'.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow of chernobyl. First enemy was quite easy, took a few shots. The next guy I came across was a military elite. It took around 200 handgun rounds because he just wouldn't go down.

i must be weird. it was the ONE game i couldnt play!! freakin' ghost recon. FREAKIN GHOST RECON!!! COULDNT KILL THE STUPID TANK! must be me. no one else had trouble. it was the only game, i could play pretty much any other game forever.
The first one, or the second? If its the first, I think you can outflank the tank via a back alley, and use the rocket launcher on the rear. Just wait till you get to the final level:
A guy in a helicopter gunship, armed with missiles that lock on to you in about 5 seconds. One hit, you're history. No explosive weapons, you have to run around fixed machine guns and spray a few rounds before legging it.
If its the second game... I'm thoroughly in agreement, that first tank is a bullshit sandwich. Not helped of course of friendly NPCs with the intellectual capacity of the average goldfish.
ya it was the second one. my friend gave it to me. thought it'd be funny. ya im glad there are others who realize how full of shit that tank was... gggggrrrrr...

Hearts of Iron. It flat out doesn't have a learning curve, more of a learning cliff. If it hadn't been for the fact I had a friend who had played it exhaustively before, I would have been utterly screwed as the game's damn addictive.

Shadow of the Collosus, started off simple and had a very gradual difficulty curve until it came to the Hard modes Time Trial-most of them were impossible for me.

HL2 'Episode' Two. I breezed through it on normal dif until the horrible Strider defense mission at the end. Even on easy it took a friend taking over my mouse and keyboard before I could get past it.
I eventually managed to do it on normal once, but I still consider it an impossible raise in difficulty (and judging by the Steam stats, I'm not the only one who never could get past it).

The embedding desn't work, but I know how you feel. I finally beat that stage by hoverboarding through the enemies like a crazed maniac.
Yeah hovercraft's pretty much the only way to do it! Although if i recall; doing the dark jak thurder slam move thingy into the water destroys that droid that pops up to blast you if you hop in the water. Then just hop on the hovercraft and hover away!

I cant believe this one hasn't come up yet: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the first one) for the NES... one level your are jumping and just kicking everything on sight and then you get to the FUCKING Water level where you have to disarm bombs that are underwater with every freaking surface covered in electric-life draining-seaweed... and you have to do it fast because the bombs will explode... it's not a brick wall it's a moving bulldozer coming right at you on a closed alley.

And the final boss on ergheiz battle/arcade mode... it's so hard the credits start rolling while you're fighting him because the programmers KNEW you wouldn't kill it.

hell yes... any fatalis and for me for some strange reason the khezu seem to be hellbent on raping my character and only him even when playing multiplayer... but even those I've managed to deal with. the fatalis in my opinion the way the programer said "ok you've gone far enough go play something else"
