They say this about every genre of music once in a while, and it tend to only be true for the REALLY popular genre's e.g. Disco, early British Punk, Grunge (not exactly dead, just not as popular), Techno (still going I guess... but still kinda sucks.) Rock will keep going with every single generation, sure it may take a detour everyonce in a while and wander into sucksville e.g. Indy Alternative rock.* Rock will be around as long as there are guitars, punk and metal will loiter forever as long as there are ticked off Teenagers around the world, and poprock will die out when the Jonas Brothers finally decide to stop making music.

*I acknowledge that some Indy/Alternative rock can be good, but the majority of the music from this category that I've heard is really sucky.

And why has no-one mentioned MASTODON?!

The closest modern equivalent to punk.

Everytimeidie is a hardcore band, son. Always have been, always will be. Although hardcore is better than punk any day.

Rock is dead in my eyes, there are no songs like on my dads old records, no song today is even close to heavy metal by sammy hagard, *sigh* songs you drive way to dam fast to and love it!

Have you listened to Whitesnake's 'Good to be Bad' , or (of course) Dokken's 'Lightning Strikes Again' ? I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

A lot of the 80's hard rock bands have actually been releasing material over the past couple years. The only thing is that they don't have MTV as an outlet anymore, and the scene died with the advent of grunge, and alternative music. Plenty of newer bands influenced by the late 70's and 80's scenes are out there too (like Talisman, Burning Rain, etc) but you have to look for them.

I've found www.sleazeroxx.com to be a great resource for catching up on what the old guys are up to, but also for finding out about new hard rock bands.

Hey, after listening to Tool on Guitar Hero 4 world tour I can honestly say they are the WORST band I have ever listened to, and my brother listens to a lot of emo and screamo, so I know when I hear crap music

Ya wolfmother rock. I cant believe you never heard of Artic Monkeys. Their a very popular English band. The singer is a great storyteller.

Biffy Clyro are one of my fav bands. Their from scotland and I hifghly recommend them. Check out their album "Infinity land" if your interested. Their latest album Puzzle is quiet good but its very mainstream so it might give the wrong impression.

Assuming you can even class their screaming as death metal....DM is more grunting etc.

In short slipknot =/= music.

Anyway...

Rock started WWAAAYYYYYYYY before late nineties. An example off the top of my head is queen, formed in the 1970s.

There are most likely earlier rock bands before that.

As for rock being dead they are most likely referring to traditional rock which most bands dont conform to these days.

I'm actually quite surprised (and slightly peeved) that people don't know what rock is anymore.

Example: Turisas is NOT rock, it's Norse Metal. I say norse metal because its heavy metal with a strictly Norse mythology theme to their songs.

As mentioned in an earlier post, a perfect example of modern rock are the Foo Fighters. Great rifts, great lyrics, great songs.

I'm seeing them live in a few months time, alongside Rolo Tomassi supporting Gallows. I'd say punk is very much alive and kicking!
