Last time I played a game with a female protagonist, I almost went out and shot everyone on my block. Shit was such a horrendous experience. However, that was just the last time. I'm not being some kind of sexist and for the record I absolutely LOVED Parasite Eve (what.), but at the end of it all, I like playing as a dude. A dude who reminds me of me, if I had a shitload of kickass abilities. I see myself like Kaim from Lost Odyssey, obviously not the immortal part, but the whole having a thousand kids part.

I always play as a male the first time through, and always as a female the second time. Except in games like Pokémon where it doesn't make any difference whatsoever.

I guess you could say that I prefer male because I always pick that first. However in RPGs that I play through as several different characters it seems like I always end up having just as many or more female characters.

Female. And when there are parties involved (i.e. Final Fantasy games), I typically make them all-female, or at least mostly female.

I play as both. But mainly female.
To me it's more plesant to be looking at an avatar of the oposite gender than than of mine(Male btw)
For two reasons:
1) I'm straight, they're women. nuff said
2) In a lot of games the men seem to be quite ugly. Whereas the women are usually beautiful.

So far: just guys. mostly because I've only played like 2/3 rpg's, and one of those is fable I.
Just not my kind of thing, really... takes up too much time. But if I ever get my hands on a GOOD rpg, I probably wouldn't mind playing female once. You can't know until you try afterall.

Erm, the real kind?

OT: It depends on the backstory. If I think a boy is more suited to it, the a boy it is. Same vise-versa.

I normally play RPGs are a female, female models in most RPGs are pleasant on the eyes so I'd rather look at that if I have to look at my character.

Also, as a female (in game), if the game allows me to USE my gender to get something I want, I always take advantage of that, the male characters pretty much never get that option in any RPG.

I'm a male IRL

Depends on the character creation options and the classes.
I usually have a few pre-made characters in my mind that i try to recreate in what ever game i can.

I'm a man who always plays as a male character. I was surprised to learn so many men played as females, and I found the concept of RPing difficult to grasp. I'm just a boring sort, I suppose.

I always play male on my first go, after that I sometimes try female, but have yet to finish a game playing a female character (not counting those with a female lead, of course).

In tabletop games though, I never had tits or felt any inclination to.

It depends on the game really, but I might choose a female character once or twice, just because there's so few female playable characters in games. Variation is key, both in food and gaming! =D

When I played WoW I kept my character as true to the lore as possible (For example, Night elves usually got males as casters/magic users, females as the "front line" type).

In Mass Effect 1&2 I played a female character, for various reasons *cough* (one being that the male VA couldn't play Paragon to save his own life).

In Fallout 3 (and most likely New Vegas when I get my hands on that) I play as a male, and choose the actions closest to what I'd do if I was in a similar post-apocalyptic situation.

as per the other thread in this regard, i tend to alternate, pretty much for the hell of it, or to see if anything changes.

most rpgs i've played haven't actually allowed the choice, however. must be choosing the wrong titles. the only "real" one I could name where you weren't either forced into the shoes of one character all the way, or acted like a spirit floating between the various corporeal bodies at the whim of the story, was harvest moon. and even that only gave you the "girl/boy" choice in later versions.
