I play most RPG's several times. Most time I play as female the first playthrough and male the second.

Depends. The more actiony RPGs, where a predetermined character has there own skill tree, I tend towards females because they are generally more powerful but fragile, or faster but weaker. And I prefer that playing style. In traditional MMOs, its a pretty even mix. Often times it depends on what name I come up with. In MMO's, well, storyline rarely matters, so I go female because hell, if I'm gonna stare at an ass for hours on end, might as well be a girl.

Female because they generally have better hairstyles. I want some longish male hairstyles in RPG's dammit >:/

Well sort of both, while I do prefer to look at a female character I always sink more into the story as a male (partly identifying myself with him).

So as always the decision comes down to boobie size :)

Always Male. I find it uncomfortable to play as the opposite sex in games with choice. I'm find when i'm forced to play as a female.

Male. Although a female could do the stuff you do in games, the skinny, scantily-clad sex-icon of a girl that all RPGs give you to play could not. How, pray tell, does this puny girl carry a sword that big and even manage to swing it? Worst is when because of a level-up system, the woman in the metal lingerie can take more hits than the huge guy in full-plate armour.

I'm all for both genders being playable in games, but if they're going to be doing the same thing, stop being sexually-repressed idiots and give them the same build and muscle for goodness sake.

Which do you think would do better?

When it comes to gunfights on the other hand, it makes very little difference aside from perhaps the ability to hold back recoil.

I normally play females because, if I have to stare at someone from the back for 30+ hours, I'd rather it be a female.

My girlfriend, on the other hand, HATES most female characters. She says they have squeaky voices and are "pretend strong" meaning they're tough until the plot needs them to be lame and get owned or captured (Tifa, Final Fantasy Advent Children or Kaname, Full Metal Panic) and only plays guy if she can help it.

My only real problem with female characters is they wear fan service armor. Armor that looks sexy but serves no real purpose since it leaves most of their body exposed if not completely naked. People argue "It's psychological defense. She distracts enemies with her sexiness." Which. is. utterly. moronic. Even if that does work what if the enemy is gay, or a 12 foot slug monster that finds us as repulsive as we find it. Such a warrior woman would have a career measured in days.

Both. The character avatar is generally incidental to gameplay. Usually I choose male when I want to be more immersed in the story, and female when I know it doesn't matter - or if they have certain attributes that benefit my desired class makeup.

Usually male simply on the grounds that female characters tend to wear so little clothing that it's amazing they don't die on the first hit, where as males usually wear a full armor suit.

Male, no idea why. I do play female characters if I can put them in skimpy outfits though:D
I also tend to make my (male) character at least resemble me.

Females actually. I rarely get to play as a female protagonist, so I always enjoy the experience. Unless all the females are ugly and generic, but if all the men are ugly and generic too, better an ugly generic female then an ugly generic male.

PENIS POWER!!...ahem male because I try to model the character on myself as much as I can...also I normally play as a warrior and if it's an option I like to kit him out with some blue tatoos or warpaint, it's a celtic thing. lol

Sort of depends on the game. I usually try both to see what kind of effects it has on the story, if any at all.
