as much as that sub culture annoys me (when I was in high school we called them goths and they liked gargoyles and cigarettes a whole lot more.) This is silly Russia shame on you.

Also, holy crap. You joined three months after me, and you've already nearly overtaken me in posts.
You joined 6ish months after me and have more posts than me.
Aaaand you joined a little more than seven months after me, yet have nearly three times my posts. So nyerhe.

I think this idea is stupid. I really do. Banning a subculture. It's just... sad, I guess.

Banning clothes is silly, banning ridiculous fringes however is a godsend.

Can't they just ban My Chemical Romance on the grounds that they're shit rather than them encouraging suicide?

Can't we just continue to shout in their faces "Cheer the fuck up!"?

This is a good thing but I can't help but think indy culture is much more annoying. Seriously who else has this? You're walking down a street, you see someone in tight jeans with long blond hair walking away from you, they turn around, it's a man. I can't shake the sick feeling I get for days.
i like my chemical romance. :[

but i'm certainly not an 'emo'.
but i do wear skinny girl jeans.
then again i'm a girl...
so i think it's allowed.

This is a bit of a dangerous thing and I'm not sure to many people understand the magnitude of such legislation. Yes, its Russia....not quite sure how that makes it right but hear me out, I'll make this short since I need to get off the forums and sleep for a few hours.

Essentially this could open the doors in other countries to show that its ok to ban certain cultures. Yes as much as everyone loves to make fun of the emo they have the right to be sad if they want to. How's that old song go again "Its my party and I'll cry if I want to".

How would we feel if the legislative powers in our various countries decided to ban apparel relating to video games and electronics in schools and government buildings on the grounds that it leads to an increase in violence in teens and young adults? I'm quite sure we wouldn't be "LOL'ing" about it.

You know, if Emo Culture were geared less towards cutting, whining, and being a shallow corporate sellout brats and more towards, well, actual suicide... I wouldn't have a problem with it, because it would be a selective pressure against stupidity.

Unfortunately, Emos go from fling to fling having sex and reproducing like retard bunnies, so yeah, bring on the ban. In fact, why doesn't Russia go a step further and ban the reproduction of anyone with a low IQ level, since they're not afraid of the backlash as much as the overly PC western world is. I'd more favor an equitable incentives system than an outright dictatorial ban, but an incentives system doesn't seem to be Russia's style.

As irritating as the whole emo thing is, banning it is just stupid. But then, I suppose human rights aren't really such a big thing for the government over there.

Are you serious? Well and truly serious??

This is brilliantly fantastic news! I'm moving to Russia!

Emo's infuriate me, they cheapen the emotional sincerity of any person stricken by real adversity, and not some self imposed misfortune. It's like saying you're addict to your cell phone, it's an insult to people with truly enslaving addictions, like drug addicts.

FIRSTLY.
"emo" meaning emotional. Is a subgenre of punk music. People only dress a certain way because either A] they like the attention
OR B] they like dressing that way maybe?

I find it very unfair that "emo" and "goth" people are stereotyped as people that all cut themselves, listen to deppressing music, and are generally shit.

Speaking as a 16 year old from the UK who generally recieves things like "goth, emo" and various other random things yelled at me in the street i can quite safely say that i have never cut myself, dont listen to deppressing music or any other of peoples stupid sterotypes.

I think its stupid that people talk about self harm as if its a joke. And as if only "emo" or "goth" people do it.
Deppression isnt a joke, its a serious problem. People that self harm because they're deppressed shouldnt be ridiculed for and and they sure as fuck shouldnt be made illigeal because of it.

Deppression and everything it entails ISNT PURELY something that effects one group of people.
It can affect anyone and everyone.

AS FOR THE MUSIC SIDE OF IT.

Once again..maybe they LIKE that music?
maybe just because you dont like something doesnt mean you should critisize it, or that a government should ban it.

and yes. i understand some "emo"'s self harm for attention. I also understand so do some people THAT ARENT "emo"

You make a good point, and also with the rest of your post which I didn't quote, but what I wanted to say was, isn't it a bit of a stretch to call Emo a culture?

Indian is a culture. Chinese, English, Eygptian, they are cultures, they have religion, languages, architecture. Cultures have their own protocols, their own structures of moral ethics and are heavy set in their own beliefs.

The point I'm long windedly trying to get at is that it's too much to call a large group of people a culture just because they're a large group, and it seems unlikely any country's going to be putting a taboo on an entire culture, like Greek or something, in following of Russia's example of banning a large group labeled "Emo's"

But then again this is exactly what America has done with Islamic culture, they just don't release articles about it, so maybe I'm wrong after all...

I'd like them to do the same here in the UK, but including chav culture as well, ah a world without emo whiners and chav twits would be perfect. Then we move onto indie kids.

I didn't think Russia had emos to begin with.

I was under the impressio that if their first Russian winter didn't get them, the bear fighters and the 'not' kgb would...

I was a goth for about 3 years as a teenager. I think banning this sort of trend is taking it waaaay too seriously.

I liked black clothes, NIN, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac etc etc but ultimately that didn't make me any less cheerful as a person. In fact in the circles I travelled in the goths that thought they could read tarot and sat around whining were generally percieved as a bit off, for taking what was essentially a fashion trend so seriously. Maybe that was just where I lived but what I'm saying is you can't classify a whole sub culture as depressed and suicidal because of the music they listen to or the clothes they wear. Chances are they have fun with friends and talk about much the same things as anyone else.

"Legislation is currenting being formulated in Russia to heavily regulate emo websites and ban emo and goth dress style in schools and government buildings."

Yeah, because all the cool kids hang out in government buildings.

Nice to see everyone rallying around them in the face of this oppression by the way. Now you'll know what everyone else will be saying when they crack down on 'video game culture' with its 'dangerous ideology' of sitting around eating junk food playing shooting games as an American solider/Japanese man-girl.

^At least thats what I would be saying if any of us actually lived in Russia.

Thank you for realizing what so many authority figures fail to realize: That these trends really aren't a big deal or going to "corrupt our youth."
