I wouldn't want to be the hero... and I'm not sure humanity deserves to be saved... but some of my best friends are humans, and I wouldn't want to see them die, I suppose...

I'd do it. I'd make the sacrifice. Though on a cosmic scale I may be damned for allowing such a destructive species to live, I'd save my friends and loved ones, at least.

But I wouldn't want to be celebrated or have a statue or anything. When I die I want to be gone... forgotten. No flowery speeches or statues or epitaphs or anything like that.

If it was a question of sacrificing myself or the whole world dies, of course I would do it.

If not sacrificing myself meant I could continue living, albeit in a world that had undergone some kind of disaster, it would depend on the situation I guess.

Yeah right, I sacrifice myself to save this planet, all so 4chan can crack jokes about me for the rest of time.

I will add a qualification to this hypothetical situation. The vast majority of people on this planet are absolutely worthless. I firmly believe these people don't deserve such a planet on which to live (and by "on which to live", I mean "to act as a parasite on").

In the book Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke, humanity gets forcibly evolved and abandon Earth, save for one guy, who lives out the rest of his days as the last human in the universe. The book very obviously tries to set this up as very somber and depressing. But here I am reading it and thinking how awesome this situation would be. I would be in a state of bliss.

If the apocolypse came next week, I wouldn't lift a finger to stop it. In fact, that kind of knowledge would most likely make for the most awesome relaxing week ever.

What is the point in being a Martyr if your not around to appretiate it?

So people can hang little versions of you meeting fate like Jesus and bastardise your beliefs through Christmas etc?

Unless I can turn it around like fake My sacrifice using someone else and then reap what I can from My public image

I keep thinking of "The Omega Man" if I was to survive...a pimped out house and endless night fighting while slowly going off the rails with a Doll

Well...if I don't do something the earth dies taking me with it. If I do something about it, everyone else survives but me.

Either way I'm dead. I should at least try but if someone can do it better than me, then go for it, I'll be the understudy over at the wings.

I certainly wouldn't, because more than likely, if someone else were in that position, they would let the earth die, just to save their skins.

EDIT: Also, I wouldn't because all of that high-and-mighty stuff about humanity learning to love each other and whatnot, that's not gonna happen. But I think that's the irony in it.

It depends.
Is the Earth going to be going out in an entertaining manner if I don't lay myself down?

Hahahahaha. NO fucking way. The human race deserves it's come-uppance. We have fucked with this planet and with each other far too long, why the hell would one person want to sacrifice themselves to save it? So everyone can continue being complete fucking assholes? I don't think so, I'd rather we all burn together than I die and the rest of the scum gets to carry on living, abusing and exploiting one another like nothing happened.

Pardon me, my misanthropic streak appears to have escaped.

Well, if the alternative is the Earth gets destroyed and we all die anyway, why not? Logically, it just makes more sense for one person to die so the rest can live.

Hmmm..... If someone else were to sacrifice themselves, yeah whatever, one down out of several billion. Go for it. Would I? Yeah, might as well. One to save the many is kinda a no brainer.

I'm going to say this topic has quite the Misanthropic undertone to it.

Its a loose loose situation for you really. If you don't everyone dies, including you. If you do everyone lives, except you... So you might as well...

I don't think I could live with myself if I didn't try to save the World. If 2/3 of the whole World was killed because of you. Do you think you could live with it? I know I couldn't.

Also I am one of a very small minority that sees that my life is a small insignificant speck in the universe. Humans on the other hand could do some great thing given enough time. So I think I would be willing to sacrifice myself, If my death would mean the continuation of our species, and a future of infinite possibilities.
(A bit dramatic I know, but its still true.)
*applause*
This is totally true. Mankind may very well be the only truly intelligent species in the entire Universe. There could be life on other planets but it's possible we are just a fluke. It's possible no other creatures have ever questioned why they exist or what lies out in the reaches of space. To you people who wouldn't sacrifice yourself, are you really saying you're willing to destroy the Universe's only hope for understanding its mysteries? Do you really believe your pathetic life is more important than possibly the most amazing beings to ever live? Mankind has so much potential, and you are so selfish you're willing to throw that potential away just so you can live out the rest of your miserable life alone on some other planet. You are going to die someday anyway, but I can guarantee if you choose to betray the whole world so you may live that your death will not be nearly as meaningful or important as this one.
I told you we are part of a very, VERY small minority of people that can see how infinitely small our lives really are, most other people only see the short term effects.

Yeah, I'd bite the dust for Earth, but only if people learned something. Doesn't matter if I get a statue or be remembered, just as long as people continue to advance, grow, learn to look past nationality, gender, or color and to join together. Yeah, i'd save it.

Sacrifice myself to save the earth?! I'd more likely sacrifice the earth to save... me.
