Some old WoW RP I did a good many months back (before the new expansion's reveal) in which my old Shaman Equani sacrificed himself to keep, and I quote from a prophet from the RP, "A terrible cataclysm from befalling all of Azeroth." It was an epic and moving moment for everyone there, and I lost one of my favorite characters as a result.

... It wasn't quite successful, was it?

Sneaking around a corner. I hear the hard breathing of the bear. I see him now. A perfect sneak critical 1 hit kill is on the way... BAM! Windows encountered a stupid error, sorry for totally fucking up your game. T_T

The ending to Twilight Princess almost had me in tears on my second playthrough. It gets sadder everytime I see it.

Another moment where I felt sad in a video game was in Mother 3 where....

You return to Tazmily Village after going to Tanetane Island and find that everyone has packed up and left town to go to New Pork City. Walking through the abandoned village with And Then There Were None [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc_VBFu9VLY] playing made me feel really sad because the villains were slowly changing the world for the worse, and all my efforts to stop them seemed futile.

Yeah that was very sad especially after that moment you share with her in her flat where she falls asleep on you, it's cute. And on your birthday as well, some birthday present Paulie. Still, it just made me want to eat some hearts all the more which is what the game's all about i suppose.

I guess the most depressing game moment for me was realising i'm going to have to buy a PS3 to play God of War 3. Man that got me down, but it'll be worth it :)

Gameplay wise the most sad part of a game has got to be
When Arana dies in Alter Echo

Final Fantasy 6, after the world is broken and you're playing Celes, alone on an island trying to nurse Cid back to health.

...and you fail. The closest thing to a father you've ever had has just died, because of you. You are alone, a yawning hole gnawing at the inside of your chest. Nothing left for you but a numb walk up to the top of that tall cliff...

I know you can succeed, and you can make Cid healthy again.. but goddamn. When you fail and decide to kill yourself.. that shit gets to you.

OK, having Dogmeat die ingame is one thing (reloading heals the hurt). But in Fallout 2 you find out that the original Dogmeat dies canonically in the first game.

Being dead ingame = fixable
Being dead in canon = WHY god WHY? He was such a faithful little guy!! You bastards!!

This isn't any particular plot point, but it happened to me after finishing the last quest of Broken Steel, Who Dares Wins. I had played as an evil character the entire game, so needless to say I took the evil option at the end of the quest. Without spoiling anything, it's an absolutely MASSIVE, completely pointless dick move, the reward of which is thousands of caps worth of equipment, including two tesla cannons and a very good custom pistol, as well as the total hostility of the brotherhood of steel. Anyway, I realized after making it back to the citadel at the end of the quest and dealing with the enemies there that despite my huge material wealth and deadly combat skills, my character was totally alone. He had killed so many potential friends and every reliable weapon merchant, save lucky harith. As I was realizing that being a dick got my character nowhere, that song "Happy Times" started playing on the radio. I nearly cried.

Damn!

When Charon mysteriously died on my first playthrough in fallout 3, I was a little shaken. I missed my stal wart ghoul companion a lot.

When ever I beat a good game I feel sad.

I just want it to go on!

My brother actually rarely finished games that are good, he stops before the last couple of levels because he doesn't want to finish it too quick, then eventually forgets the game.

I know of a couple in FFIX, when...

Fratley returned (definitely crushing for Freya)

or...

Brahne died. I mean, she was a total scumbag before that, but, some reason, it still gets me.
