you're alone in the ocean
but instead you are shown either how the creature you just defeated became so, how it wiped out a civilization or both.

such as when you (as Hero) defeat medusa and you have to kill Amanda.

Some old WoW RP I did a good many months back (before the new expansion's reveal) in which my old Shaman Equani sacrificed himself to keep, and I quote from a prophet from the RP, "A terrible cataclysm from befalling all of Azeroth." It was an epic and moving moment for everyone there, and I lost one of my favorite characters as a result.

... It wasn't quite successful, was it?
And the Cataclysm still happened
Kinda what I hinted at, yeah.

But seriously, when playing Bioshock for the first time - watching Atlas' wife and kids die was pretty bad.

Also, Baldur's Gate - Gorion! Noooooooooo!

In the original KotOR, if you were evil you could
kill Mission.

It is possibly one of the most despicable acts in videogames and made my heart pang in sadness.
Then you were clearly doing a bad job of being a Sith.

C-, must try harder. :p

Wait, how is that? Mission is one of the most likeable characters in the game, and
forcing her own best friend to kill her
is low even for a Sith I must admit.
I remember that. Luckily enough, I didn't force Zaalbar too, as I didn't use him. I just killed her myself! But it was sad. I had a great connection to her, as well as Jolee. But HK made it all better.

Also, when [spoiler/]Seargent Johnson died[/spoiler] I was very sad. He was one of the main reasons I enjoyed the Halo single player, with his witty one liners and his great joy in shooting the living hell out of any non human or elite.

True enough, I suppose. I never got much out of playing the evil path anyway. The game gives you better rewards for playing the good path, and besides I'm naturally more Jedi than Sith.

Hmm, let's see. Half-Life 2 Episode 2's ending, a few parts of World in Conflict, The Darkness, several parts of GTA4... That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Oh also, Empire: Total War when
You realize what a mess of a game it is.

Gears 2, Doubt no one knows about it. The music just made it worse, and the fact that I knew it was going to happen. That and the ending of frontlines. The whole speech at the end, then the camera panning out to show the red star's retaliation. Just made me feel like I wasted all that time, that huge final fight only for a counter attack. That and the speech was more or less about how the world could rebuilt itself.
