Hmmm CoD 2: Big Red 1....In the last level your assulting the german border, and as your running into a trench a shell goes off and kills Brooklyn(I think that was his name...), a New-Yorker who had been with you since the 1st mission and saved your life on multiple occassions. When he died I was like "What?!?! He's dead?!?!? Just like that?!?! NOOOOOO!!!!! "

It was a sad day in video gamming for me.

EDIT: Not as bad as Big Red One, but in Dead Space when Isaac finds out that he has lost his mind and that his GF actualy killed herself weeks before he arrived, I found that part sad, especialy since the way he found out was the evil character being a jerk, and that the only reason he was enduring the private hell onboard the ship was because of her. Very sad.

This isn't any particular plot point, but it happened to me after finishing the last quest of Broken Steel, Who Dares Wins. I had played as an evil character the entire game, so needless to say I took the evil option at the end of the quest. Without spoiling anything, it's an absolutely MASSIVE, completely pointless dick move, the reward of which is thousands of caps worth of equipment, including two tesla cannons and a very good custom pistol, as well as the total hostility of the brotherhood of steel. Anyway, I realized after making it back to the citadel at the end of the quest and dealing with the enemies there that despite my huge material wealth and deadly combat skills, my character was totally alone. He had killed so many potential friends and every reliable weapon merchant, save lucky harith. As I was realizing that being a dick got my character nowhere, that song "Happy Times" started playing on the radio. I nearly cried.
I found this interesting in the fact that it is kind of true to real life. You reap what you 've sown.

The end of Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core. I nearly cried. Which is really sad when I think of it.

Kingdom Hearts games have a bunch:

The ending of KH1 isn't exactly melancholic (in fact it partly felt perfect that Sora's journey wasn't over, though that might have been just because it meant a sequel), but it was sad the despite having made up with Riku and saving Kairi, they still couldn't go back to the way things were.
Maybe there was a subtle message there that even if they all came out of the crisis in friendship okay and still friends, there was never going back to the innocent relationship they had since childhood.

Then of course there was Axel's death, who was (arguably) the best side character for the two games he appeared in.

And there's Reverse/Rebirth... There were more than one sad scene, but the whole story was rather meloncholic (though the conclusion and message were on the brighter side).
I suppose the most visible thing was that unlike Sora's, Riku's memories were completely devoid of the people he had met (other than the Heartless and villains), reflecting his guilt for abandoning friends. The overall atmosphere of loneliness, that is to say (and the bried glimpses of friends there and there contrasted it nicely).
And of course there was the encounter with his own Replica (who was a tragic character through both modes, actually).

And at the end of CoM (in Sora's story), there's the scene where he decides to forget about everything that happened, including Naminé to regain his real memories... That's the sort of bittersweetness that makes Kingdom Hearts great.

Definitely Dom having to Kill Maria from GoW 2.... I was also a little saddened by

Tai's demise

as well.

Shadow of the Colossus for sure, and there's a part in Saints Row 2 where

Carlos, the guy that breaks you out of prison and looks up to you, is dragged to near-death by a rival gang using a chain on the back of their truck. By the time you reach him he's totally messed up. Your character just looks so sad as he puts the gun to Carlos' head and mercifully ends his life.

Either when the last boss in Fable died (I thought he rocked :D) Or at the end of 'The Waters of Life' quest in Fallout 3- I even started yelling 'NOOO!!! DAD!!!" at the t.v., I loved him more than my real dad, lol

Apart from that, I usually laugh off every other 'sad' moment in games.

Final Fantasy X - Though it obvious its coming, the fact that Auron had been dead throughout the game adn needs to be sent to the farplane, he was the best character to feature in a final fantasy

The "In Water" ending to Silent Hill 2.
After confronting Mary he confesses why he killed her. After this she dies from her illness. James picks her body up and carry her to his car. As you hear the engine of the car starting you hear James say "Don't worry Mary, we'll be together soon" as he drives off

Mother 3 - Even though I started to cry
because of joy after they "talked" to me
the ending was really sad.

Also, the ending of Call of Duty 4.

When you kill The Boss in MGS3 and are only later told..
That she was sent as a pawn to 'defect' to the soviets and take the blame for the destruction of the Russian research lab. Knowing full well she was going to be killed, she gave her life for a brief continuation of peace... *sob*
Also, The end of HL2 EP2
./agree with the "In Water" ending of Silent Hill 2 (though I thought it was the most realistic ending offered, it was still sad)
And, call me crazy, but the part in FEAR when you kill Paxton Fettel in a hallucination, only to find out that you had actually just killed him IRL.

OK, having Dogmeat die ingame is one thing (reloading heals the hurt).
No it doesn't. It just makes Dogmeat run head first into the same army of bots and die again in my saves case. What a nuisance.

Probably the ending of MGS4 for me. The way it ties (almost) everything up with that ungodly long but interesting cut-scene made me sad. It finished the story I spent so many sleepless hours with in all of the games.

Final Fantasy X takes the cake in my opinion. Between the ending and when Tidus learns what will happen to Yuna only after constantly talking about what they'll do after Sin is gone. The game really pushed hard on the depressing aspects with some fantastic story telling.

Dom having to kill Maria in GoW2. Powerful and emotional scene.
I forgot about this. I never played GoW2 however I watched that scene on Youtube and wow, certainly not what you would expect in a FPS game, especially Gears however that was beautifully done in spite of how depressing it was.
