Lillith thought they should go check the student roster down on the bottom floor of the dorms. Ashley was probably going to be on there somewhere, so it was the best place to start. She led the witch away from her room, making sure to lock and hex the door behind her as she went.
They talked on the way, introducing themselves. The witch, who Lillith had learned was named Daniella, had come to Poemandres before the zeppelin arrived. Apparently she was already a fairly accomplished mage but was required to be taught and tested at a school rather than her own home to be allowed to practice magic professionally.
"So you learned from home?" Lillith asked with a genuine interest.
"Yeh," Daniella nodded, "My parents run a small-time magical bookstore so they had loads of free time to teach me some basic magic. And then I learned the rest from the books we kept in storage."
"That's pretty good."
"Yeh it is..." Lillith thought that Daniella was thinking for a second, "So what do your parents do?"
"My parents?" Lillith looked down slightly, trying her best to adopt a pained expression. "I... don't really have any parents." It was best to pick something like this that would force Daniella to shy away from further forays into Lillith's past.
"Oh, I'm... Sorry. I didn't mean to..." The guilt on Daniella's face was obvious. While Lillith didn't want too many questions about herself, she didn't want to make people upset with themselves either.
"No, no... It's fine. You couldn't know."
A moment's silence passed, most probably because Daniella was too afraid to ask anything else in case of 'upsetting' Lillith further. Lillith herself was forced to try and lift the mood. "So..." She said once another moment had passed, "Who's Ashley?"
Daniella seemed to stammer and covered her face with the brim of her hat, "J-just someone I met on my way here." Lillith assumed nothing but wondered silently why the witch had stammered. "At first I was okay with sharing a room but my roommate turned out to be a bit of a dick. And since we still have a bit of time left to switch our rooms around I'm gonna see if I can move in before someone else does."
By the time Daniella had finished speaking they had reached the elevator and Lillith had pushed the button to call it.
