Calling him Derpy is offensive though. It's the same as the stereotypical homophobic little kids on xbox live who say that using "gay" and "fag" as insults is okay and not derogatory bigotry because they aren't refering to actual homosexuality. Except this is worse because people nicknamed her Derpy because she was cross eyed and it could be a trait of a number of mental disorders. It is akin to calling her retarded.
Yes, but... I've honestly never heard anyone using the phrase 'derp' or 'derpy' to refer to someone with a mental disorder. I realise this is purely anecdotal, but I've yet to hear anyone with a mental disorder themselves complain about it, just people complain on behalf of them...

^That's the person who did what was basically the most popular fan version of Derpy's voice before she was given a canon voice.
She sounds adorable I would have liked a voice like this on Derpy! Well I'm in America and I had no idea derp was a word until I googled it after seeing it on some pony shirts. I hear retard used to describe mentally challenged people though. I think it's a case of over sensitivity by a parent.

I guess it really is a location thing since where I'm from people use it as one all the time so calling her derpy, especially because of the connotations that people do call her that would be akin to calling a flamboyant character "Faggy". A nickname based off a derogatory term placed on the person because they possess a stereotype of that minority.
Well, since I'm from the UK I suppose it's fair enough to say I'm not really in a position to comment about your derogatory slang. I suppose the closest we ever had was 'spazzy'...
Well where I'm from I've only heard people say the word 'derpy' when talking about this particular character. Other than that it's not widely used. If it wasn't in reference to the character, then it's using what I thought was the definition for this word: A mistake, a momentary lapse in judgement, or when someone says something particularly unintelligent.

The first recorded use of the word "Derp" was in the 1998 film Basketball by Matt Stone and Trey Parker. They used it in a few episodes of South Park as well, and they always just considered it synonymous with "dumb humor". I've never seen anything that would contradict that.

It doesn't really matter anyway, I've noticed some people saying that derp is just a word for stupid but is that really that much better considering they started calling her derpy because of an animation error displaying a possible symptom of a mentally disabled person? Hasbro could fix all this by giving her her canonic name ditzy doo back, plus she wasn't really a compelling character anyway.
Like every other one of them

I have mixed feelings about this. One the one hand, it's sad to see fans finally thrown such a bone only for it to be recanted and possibly never surface again. And seeing relations between creators and fans sour like this.

On the other hand, the "derp" meme, not Derpy Hooves in particular, but the entire "derp" meme is kinda creepy and does seem oddly like exploitation and mockery of the mentally disabled. When I was in school, loads of kids said things like "hurrdurr I'm a retard" as a mocking, subhumanizing gesture. And come on, even if it's from South Park as something to mean "mistake", you know that's where the "herp derp" meme comes from.

It's fine for people to be fans of "Derpy" Hooves, but does her name REALLY have to be "Derpy"? It's a line from South Park. Can't My Little Pony be more original and less meta than that? And who is to say the South Park creators aren't being incredibly ableist themselves?

What's the worst thing is how this all ended out by suddenly rising to the surface now, now that the creators finally decided to canonize Derpy. It was an elephant in the room for many fans and non-fans alike that should have been addressed long, long before now.

To be honest, a lot of us felt that was wrong to begin with and it was why were preferred "Ditsy Doo". But we treated the "Derpy" meme as just "the internet being the internet and putting offensive things and references into everything. That's just how the internet is, it's offensive and inconsiderate and you have to pick your battles", and chose not to make an issue.

Also, why are people fans of Derpy? If you're a fan of Derpy, wouldn't you want her to be called the most respectable name possible, instead of one reminiscent of mocking disabled people? Because if you don't, doesn't that just make you look like you like the character because of a possible exploitation of the disabled for humor?

I love the character Derpy. Well, she's not super high on my list of favourite characters, but she's cute, nonetheless. And I support her getting more airtime and the like. But I've always been uncomfortable with the "derp" meme and I'm even more uncomfortable with it surfacing in My Little Pony. I have to put up with the disabled being mocked, dehumanized, and otherwise exploited on the internet as it is, I don't want to have to be reminded of that when watching My Little Pony.

But as much as I'm uncomfortable with the "Derp" meme, I'm much more uncomfortable with the people who have sent hate letters to Hasbro about this immaturely and are souring the relationship between fans and creators right now. Hasbro are only trying to do something nice and should not be bitten for it.

And please don't hate me for not liking the "derp" meme.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I just realised that since I only have the internet to base that on I didn't really know it.

Anyway, I think Ditzy Doo would do fine; fan service aside it just seems like a better name for a pony to be honest. It would distinguish that she's simply clumsy rather than mentally disabled, as well.

I have to admit, back when I first heard that I immediately thought "another relative of Scooby Doo?" Yeah, naming her Ditzy Doo would have avoided this entirely. But with everybody trying so hard to be politically correct nowadays I wouldn't be surprised if someone thought of it as prejudice against blondes.

I sign the petition because I don't want the character to die, but I would be perfectly fine for a ditzy doo rename. I can live that down.

Derpy was never named Ditzy in canon. The Last Roundup is the first time she was ever named in the show. Her canon name is Derpy. You don't have to like it, but it is canon.

One of my friends mentioned this at school the other day, its very stupid. Derpy is not an insult to people with disabilities, I'd rather her be renamed then taken out out of the show altogether but this whole thing is just... derpy *puts on sunglasses*

Ugh, fucking really? Billy from "The Grim Adventures" had an IQ of -7, and nobody cared. Ed from "Ed, Edd and Eddy" was the same, and nobody cared. Stimpy from "Ren and Stimpy" was the same, and although many people took issue with that show (for obvious reasons) Stimpy's stupidity wasn't one of them.

The fuck? Why is this an issue all of a sudden? ESPECIALLY since this character has existed in the fandom for some time now?
Because none of them were named "Dumbass".

Ostensibly, anyways. "Derp" has little to do with retardation, and more to do with logical failure.

How in hell does it make fun of people with mental disabilities?

It's a silly joke for a kid's cartoon.

Don't go blowing a fucking casket.

Well, it has to do with all of this modern age censoship crap that cartoons in the '90s-Early 20's never had to deal with.

When the name Ditzy Doo was mentioned people associated it with Derpy, and Lauren Faust said they didn't really have any plans for it so people could call her that if they wanted. Besides, it was Rainbow Dash who called her that, so it could easily be an insulting nickname.

Ditzy Doo was mentioned in Winter Wrap-Up. Ms. Faust once said they didn't have a design for Ditzy, so if they ever needed to show her in the future they might, might use the Derpy design for her. That's the entire basis for anypony using the name Ditzy for Derpy. Turns out they never have needed to show Ditzy, and now Derpy has been named canonically. Until that moment she was just "grey wall-eyed background pony" or something similar.

I saw this commented on youtube under the Last Roundup episode and it kinda made sense to me to point it out
Derpy is no more offensive than Goofy, Thumb up so people see that just because someone acts silly and with a voice like Derpy's, that doesn't make them depictions of the handicapped.
Character's like Derpy in Cartoon History:
Ed (Ed Edd and Eddy)
Dee Dee (Dexter's Lab)
Pinky (Pinkie and the Brain)
Bullwinkle (Rocky and Bullwinkle)
Patrick Star (Spongebob Squarepants)
Again, Please thumb to show that Derpy is just a clumsy, somewhat dumb character like the characters listed, not a stereotype
I don't really see why it's such a big deal. I get the same vibe off this as when that one guy attacked Portal 2 for having adoption jokes in it. There's always got to be someone who's offended by a popular thing

Derpy isn't really a term for actual disabled people though, it's more a diss you would say to someone who is clumsy or acts a bit silly.
Really I feel it's just PC idiots getting too involved in the mainstream, ruining everyone else's fun
They do this with a lot of things and although I can understand with Derpy's voice, her name doesn't deserve changing, it's perfect as it is.
I would say more but the amount that i've discussed this matter online D: Too much discussion for one subject.

Maybe the Hurp Derp Pony was when they 'Jumped the Shark'...

Why save what's already practically dead?
As much as I respect your opinion, this thread was made more for fans, discussing what they know rather than people coming in with little information about the subject.
Perhaps you don't like the show, and that is fine, but the show is in no way dying, it is on it's second season and they have already confirmed a third. Sorry but you are quite wrong in that matter.
