I thought Ditzy was the fan name for Derpy's child?
No, that's Dinky.

There was a reference in Winter Wrap-up to a pegasus named Ditzy Doo who flew north to find the southern birds, and people immediately associated her with Derpy.

I might get why people get offended by Derpy but this is a bit to far I mean fans could also have called her "Downy Hooves" or something Derp isn't really tied to people with mental disabilities but more klutzy behavior it,s never stated she is mentally handicapped.
end even if they change it Bronies would still call her Derpy.

This is quite entertaining. For the first time in history, a kids' TV show has been declared sacrosanct by "teh interwebs". One thing to remember parents: never try to change a running meme.

Fluttershy may be my favorite of the "mane six," but I have a soft spot for Derpy as well. I love how she's become a fully-fledged side character when she was originally just a simple animation error/light-hearted animator's prank. I felt the adoption of her fan name and speaking role was the best kind of shout-out a show like this could give. It was the ultimate inside joke for those of us in the know, yet the scene could still be appreciated at face value for the uninitiated.

Clearly, I did not account for the uptight, overly PC-obsessed crowd looking for excuses to be "offended."

Derpy has never been viewed as mentally disabled. She's merely a klutz, plain and simple. Lord knows there have been plenty of characters like her in other cartoons (Patrick Starfish, Heifer Wolf, Odie, Shaggy, etc.), yet nobody seemed to complain about them. Even if it was revealed that she was mentally handicapped, that wouldn't prevent the fans from loving her. How could we dislike such an innocent and likeable character, particularly when she's become our unofficial mascot? If anything, I'd say it's the detractors that are at fault here for trying to create controversy where there was none.

Come to think of it, I wonder if some of the "outcry" is actually the work of trolls trying to cause mischief. Some MLP haters go to absurd lengths to try and shut the show down, even going so far as pretending to be Hasbro so they can remove any and all related videos on Youtube (including fan creations).

It's good to see that Hasbro has apparently taken the high ground and decided to keep the name.

Here is the canon voice
Oh...

I've got to be honest, the voice isn't going to help matters. We obviously have quite a lot of characters in cartoons who are shown as being stupid, and sometimes their name alludes to it (Goofy), but none of them that I can think of had a physical defect which could be seen as evidence of a mental disability.

Honestly, if they had changed the voice to make the character seem like it was a bit dizzy rather than mentally deficient they'd probably have saved themselves a little bit of hassle.

I'd like the name to stay, as a trophy of the fanbase, but portraying the only character as having something physically wrong with it as thick and incapable is going to raise a few eyebrows. Not every parent is going to be aware of the origins of the meme 'Derp' or Derpy's name-origin.

I urge you folks to take a look at this.

Plus as has been stated by TimeLord below there is nothing to worry about here.

Anyway, as a couple of people have said already. They aren't changing it.

no, you didn't miss a thread. We don't talk about pony stuff in the forums, come to our usergroup for that.
Ha! Sorry...

Like I said in OP, I'm not much for actually making threads. Although that does explain the lack of Pony threads I've seen lately...

Why cant we discuss ponies in the forums @pinkamena?
I understand we get trolled allot.
But that´s what moderators are for they warn the trolls that go too far.
We talk about pc exclusivity, we get hardcore pc dickheads calling console gamers retards.
We make a mlp thread and talk about that,We get trolls calling us manchildren,fur-fags,or the like.
what's the difference?

I've never heard "derp" used as a derogatory term against mentally handicapped people, I've only heard it used to denote stupid people or something stupid.

At any rate, I'm chocking this up as a parental overreaction. Derpy should (and will, as I'm seeing) stay in the show.

Stuff like this is only offensive if you look at it like it could be offensive.

Just one question: What on earth are helicopter parents?

I just have this baffling picture stuck in my mind now:

HELLO SON! We're your real parents!
...strangely I have that movie...

A Helicopter-Parent is a parent that hovers over their children, watching and controlling virtually every aspect of their lives. I used the term because they seem to think that everything has some sort of child-innocence destroying fault...

Example...one of my friends wasn't allowed to play Pokemon because they evolved...
Speaking of Pokemon, this sounds a lot like the whole Jinx thing back in the good old days of Pokemon.

Because well most pony threads are just bad experiences for us bronies, simple as that. We aren't like the PC elitists who have to defend a big purchase and love arguing. We just want to like a show and share it with people sometimes, not argue about it with some random other user. That's why bronies themselves are making sure there isn't many pony threads. This one is fine since well, the Escapist loves a bit of "People got offended for silly reasons" threads.

OT: Well it looks like nothing will happen to Derpy, which is awesome.

I know I never imagined her speaking that way.
Part of the problem is that the voice actress thought Derpy was male. Apparently she was mimicking a specific kid she used to know.
I just thought she sounded Canadian.

But yeah, this whole fiasco has taught me one thing at least; that the word ableist exists, and that I despise it, almost as much as I despise the word heteronormative.

What about "ageist"? It's when you discriminate based on a person's age.

I can almost, kinda understand complaints about the voice, I can see how it could be interpreted as a stereotypical "retard" voice. But she's been clumsy since the beginning (Remember the time she dropped roughly four thousand pounds worth of junk of Twilight's head?) and changing that now would be like changing Fluttershy into a speed demon, wrong on every conceivable level.
