What is the location in a game that has had you responding to the slightest thing by jumping out of your skin? What was it about the place that made it so scary?

I have three candidates, but I'm not decided on which one takes the biscuit; spoilers put in place in case you haven't visited them before and still intend to be surprised... and jumpy.

1) Stalker: Call of Pripyat - Pripyat
It was the only one of the three zones I was genuinely unnerved by. If you turn the music off and stand still there is absolutely nothing... just silence. It's so empty as well and the buildings looming over you. I imagine that Pripyat in real life must be similar; just a deadly silence. With the soundtrack on, Pripyat is still immensely creepy; the night soundtrack is especially good at sending shivers down my spine. The Kindergarten (so much psy energy, so many flying objects), the Old Service Centre (the shuffling upstairs and the Pseudodog suddenly falling out the window) and that muttering of zombies somewhere nearby were all things that really wierded me out.

2) Stalker: Call of Pripyat again - X8.
Its the noises! The lab, even after you have genoicided then entire population of freaks and mutants it is still noisy. There's the sound of that steam valve, the anomalies and the banging in pipes among others and the latter of those three examples is the one that still has me jumping. The narrow corridors and confusing layout unnerve and when I first went in there, I was very quickly wanting to just get the documents and get out as quickly as possible. It constantly sounds like there's something nearby. And I haven't even mentioned how unnerving that baby's cry is - man that made my spine shiver... I still cringe at the thought of that.

3) Fallout 3 - Dunwich Building
That place had me the most scared I've ever been playing Fallout ever. Even Vault 22 in New Vegas, which was pretty creepy in its own right, pales in comparison. I think it was the feeling that there was just something unnatural in the place, something almost paranormal (yes the doors swinging open and the things falling off tables did give it away, as did the visions). Only place in Fallout I've wanted to leave because I'm creeped out rather than worried the inhabitants will kill me because I'm too low a level.

Oh and also, what were the fail-scary locations; places in games which were supposed to be creepy but really weren't? None immediately jump to mind for me.

When I was a wee kid I was shared shitless after coming out of the Temple of Time in Ocarina of time.

Oh crap this place is a dump. What are those creepy moaning guys. *looks at one*

"AAAAAAAAAAHHH!!"

Holy shit what was that! Why can't I move! Oh god it's slowly getting closer! The future is SCARY!!

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl. Bloodsucker village, Agropom research underground, Brain scorcher.

Or Condemned. The department store scene.

+1 for Dunwich Building. Nice choice - would make my Top3 as well.
Maybe I'd also put the zombie infested tunnel sections of Highway 17 in there. Or maybe not

However, an honorable mention goes to:
This "unnerving location"is actually your safe haven, the one instance in the game where your character(you) connects to reality (including very clever details) and is - ... - safe from harm. However, the way This Room works as a psychological device (including very clever details) in boosting the unnervingness of it all times 10 is one my "Remarkable Stuff in Game History". Or something.

Pretty much the entirety of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. However, a special mention goes to the prison blocks and the set of rooms with the book puzzle (where you glimpse your first monster). By the gods, I nearly wet myself.

Alchemica Hospital is always a good one too. (Silent Hill series)

That. Exactly that.

The entirety of Silent Hill 2 freaks me out. Special mention here goes to 'There was a hole here. It's gone now.'

What does that even mean?!

I agree with the Dunwich Building, and Silent Hill 4, although I would say that the part in Silent Hill 4 that freaked me out the most was in the Apartment Building 'Real World' side at the very end.

"Daddy, where are you?"

Yeah... um... freaky.

That game had some great scary places, broken though the gameplay might be. For instance, I absolutely dreaded coming back to the apartment after the fan broke.

Those who have played it will know why.

Amnesia: Dark Crescent

The whole game actually. Or the basement and the storage room.

Gotta give props to the Dunwich Building (especially after downloading Point Lookout).
The World of Chesty from Fable II. The single scariest inanimate object in the universe.

I have an incredibly low tolerance for horror in games. In the very beginning of FEAR I shot the crap out of that poor dead man in the chair...just to make sure he wouldn't get up.

Night/caves in Minecraft scare me. My first time playing was...eventful. "Hey cool, I have sticks and a work bench. Huh, it's night...bad things happen at night so I better--what's the red glowy thing? HOLY CRAP IT'S COMING AFTER ME!!"

Gods forbid I ever play a Silent Hill game <_<.

Yes. Yes I did. And you'd have thought I would have learned that you shouldn't pick up things in Silent Hill when I picked up Angela's knife in 2...
