Scary Games?

Silent hill is probably the right way to go.

I for one found the gamecube remake of resident evil the scariest of the series, and if you want something with a lot of suspense, play RE4 simply because putting yourself in such close quarters with a megafuckton of enemies is scary in the sense of "OH MY GOD I'M GOING TO DIE."

I love the original Alone in the Dark series. (before new nightmare) Yes, the graphics are awful compared to anything from the past 15 years, but the game was so much fun trying to beat the final boss. (Put talisman down, light lighter, throw lighter at tree, RUN.)

X-blades, Iron Man, Dynasty Warriors Gundam... bad games are scary... but if you want a real scary game, try Dear Esther, Korsakovia, or Cryostasis.

Silent Hill 1 freaked me out when I played it. Aside from that, several games have jump moments for me even if the moments are not neccesarily "Scary". Fallout 3 has a few of these when monsters suddenly pop up and start shooting at me.

Condemned 1 and the first half of 2.
Dead Space and it's predecessor in almost every way System Shock 2... I remember almost killing my cat when it brushed against my leg while running around the corridors of the Rickenbacker, wrench in hand, almost out of every type of ammo...

Specifically, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly. THE LAUGHTER! THE DOLLS! AARRGGHH!!

According to the reviews (if you actually trust someone else's opinions), Alan Wake is supposed to be a pretty good horror game--I'm looking forward to trying it out.

Otherwise, I'm not too much of a horror fan in general, mostly because too often developers seem to think that horror=gore/shock imagery. Personally, I find psychological horror to be better (I couldn't shower comfortably for a little while after watching Psycho), and too few games are made with that brand of terror in mind (no pun intended). I suppose that I'm open to suggestions on this, because I have no problem with getting scared--I just think that modern media does it wrong, and Hitchcock will always creep me out better than most modern horror films or games.

Silent Hill is probably the only game that kept me up at night.

You know what? A bit off topic, but there were two games for the Sega Saturn that were quite frightening, and if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated if they PM'd me what they are.

The first one had a female lead, and a boxcover with... I think a wierd symbol dripping blood and a creepy white face with shadowy eyes.

The other was set in...I think space, with a female character who couldn't see the monsters, but only pick up their presence with static from a radio. *EDIT* It starts with her waking up naked from a cryogenic sleep or something.

I know it's EXTREMELY vague, but I can't be bothered to pull apart my attic for the sake of a nostalgia. I promise that I *have* googled this several times, I just can't find it.

pretend it has better graphics though, or you won't want to keep playing after the opening.

I think horror should be about individuals. Almost every horror game puts you against alot of 'things', but imagine this (I actually have a whole script for this one); One person (you) in fully functional hospital. You can use anything AT ALL as a weapon, as well as brawler type combat. In the hospital, someone locks down the doors and cuts the power, then starts savagely murdering his way through. Hes a normal human being, he had a machete and a wristblade, and is proficient in MMA. Then factor in destruction mechanics and hyperrealism (like tripping over small objects, heart rate, pain, not dieing from cuts, but rather being gutted/maimed and debilitated; Like, having your leg cut off makes you have to crawl etc) And you have one hell of a horror game.

System Shock 2 was a extremely scary game. It had loads of atmosphere and the monsters are pretty creepy

Condemned 2 is terrifying for the first half, plus it has the most adrenaline pumping chase sequence I've ever played.

It gets awful silly in the second half though but it's still fun.

I must be the only person who liked silent hill 1 and 3 more then 2, altho then again I totally missed all the intricacies of its plot, I was just disappointed that none of it was scary for me

Yep, that sounds about like something I would appreciate. I get amused by the ridiculous supernatural stories that are supposed to be scary but just make them seem less realistic and put me out of the experience. Therefore, it makes me sad that you're concept is (thus far) only a concept, to the best of my knowledge.

Then again, that does run the risk of turning into a slasher movie styled game, which are ridiculous for the idea of some un-killable fellow running around doing mean things to teenagers in extraordinarily ostentatious ways. You'd have to find some way to avoid the pitfall of a ridiculously powerful antagonist, because movies like Friday the Thirteenth stopped being scary a long time ago (they're practically comedies by now), and the idea of tripping over something while running a way is a little bit too much of a horror cliche by now, in my opinion--not that it wouldn't make for a terrifying game mechanic.
