Silent hill is probably the right way to go.
I for one found the gamecube remake of resident evil the scariest of the series, and if you want something with a lot of suspense, play RE4 simply because putting yourself in such close quarters with a megafuckton of enemies is scary in the sense of "OH MY GOD I'M GOING TO DIE."
I love the original Alone in the Dark series. (before new nightmare) Yes, the graphics are awful compared to anything from the past 15 years, but the game was so much fun trying to beat the final boss. (Put talisman down, light lighter, throw lighter at tree, RUN.)
