silent hill 1 and 3 or if you want a free one look up the white chamber
Pretty much this, although add Silent Hill 2 if you don't mind waiting for a few hours for everything to go scary.
I must be the only person who liked silent hill 1 and 3 more then 2, altho then again I totally missed all the intricacies of its plot, I was just disappointed that none of it was scary for me
I liked 3 better than 2, although 2 had the best "AAUUGGHH!" moments. Like the hospital rooftop attack, or having to go through the hotel basement again - with no light.

3 still wins my heart, because I prefer "FUUUUUUU-" moments over "AAUUGGHH!" moments.

the only moment that kinda freaked me out in silent hill 2 was in the hospital in one of the rooms you run in and the camera is on you as you move in then it suddenly shifts and there is a huge freaky head of a woman with big eyes moving around fast.. at least I think it was in silent hill 2, it might have been in 4

That was 4.

I'm sure there were SOME moments in SH2 that freaked you out... If only the rape scenes. :p

I had that one! ENEMY ZERO!

So, so, SO absolutely nerve-wrecking! You could only know how close the aliens where, you could never know where exactly they were coming from, and the areas were such labyrinths!

Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

I won't spoil it, but when you get to the attic of Thomas Waite the easily scared and the elderly may want to call a fucking ambulance in advance.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of The Earth. It's not so much SCARY per say, but it can DEFINITELY give you the creeps.
I entered this thread to mention the very same game. I couldn't finish it. I can't finish most scary games, because I get too immersed in them, and even the mutant infested sewer parts of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. had me quitting that game. But I still recognized that Call of Cthulu did it very, very well.

Disregard Doom 3, Dead Space, Condemned and FEAR! Look out, wussies! Penumbra is here!

Nowhere else in games will you find yourself truly alone, defenseless, and cold, either advancing slowly in anticipation, or manufacturing a way to hide from or sneak past the monster that wants to bone your brains out.

I was never scared of games that give me means of defense, and never will be since Penumbra. Though you do have a weapon in the first episode, you're a skinny English professor, meaning that it's hard to defend yourself.

Exactly.

To this day I refuse to pull it out and play it.

Still, a great game that offered plenty of scares.

This a thousand times. It is easily the scariest game I have ever seen. It is really hard to defend yourself, and the atmosphere is so intense. It's got a cool puzzle solving aspect too.

The only game that ever really scared me was the REmake on the gamecube.
Also the Unreal 2k4 mod "Out of Hell"

Now this may not be the scariest game I've ever played but pretty much everything I know has already been mentioned so I'll go with a game that hasn't been.

It's called Nosferatu: Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi. A bit older (some 7 years) game, the plot is a slightly different take on Bram Stoker's Dracula. Your sister is getting married to a count (Romanian of course) and your whole family is going to his castle to attend the wedding ceremony. You were attending a fencing competition so you arrive a bit later then the others.

It's dead of night as you enter, none of your family is to be seen and you can see something is wrong. There are thousands of crucifixes nailed to the inside of the gate everything's quiet, you can't go back so you have to go on and explore.

The interesting thing about levels is they are randomly generated every time you start so you never know where the monsters are at. Your objective is to save all of your family members before the midnight and if you take too long they will die. Also you start off only with your cane sword but as you rescue the family they each give you some sort of new weapon.

For example the priest gives you a crucifix with which you can keep the monsters at bay by holding the mouse button pressed or sanctify a well then take the holy water in a cup and use it as a weapon etc.

Now the game is a bit rough around the edges and the graphics are of course bad by today's standards (you can mask it up a bit by turning on the grainy screen effect) but it's still an interesting and worth checking out IMO. If, that is, you can even buy it anywhere now-day.
