i wouldn't really classify being startled as scared, it is more of a shock moment than a reaction to something truly horrific. i've only been scared by games that were intentionally scary. but those same games have had me put off scary games for up to a week at a time because i couldn't get myself together to play them (and even then, only during the day).

I had the privilege of watching a friend play Dead Space on his birthday. Upon sighting the first monster, he immediately dropped the controller and ran upstairs screaming and crying. I felt bad for laughing knowing that I'dve probably done the same thing if I were the one playing, but...

Haha yeah. The monsters aren't the scary bit. I actually laughed when I spotted the.. wait.. well the huge armored THING that resembled a retarded rhino rampaging through a door but it's the sounds that set it apart from other "horror" games and that's what makes it scary. In my opinion of course and I'm a licensed pussy.

The dentist from Bioshock. I still can't remember where he pops up, so every time I see him, I get freaked out.

i don't know why but thay scare the hell out of me

With me the reason they scare me is because of how limited your visibility is in most games. I always get worried of sharks and big undersea monsters.

Also on Unreal 2 there is a level where the main enemy is a bunch of spiders. Because I was so scared (arachnophobia) I ended up relying on my heavier weapons. You can take out the small spiders with a pistol but I was scared so I used a shotgun and the grenade launcher.

Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is an excellent adventure, but I would've preferred a bit of toned-down madness.

Also, the Valkyrie induced dream sequence in the original Max Payne. When you hear your wife sobbing and you are tracking her voice, that was unnerving enough. However when I opened an innocent looking door and then heard her scream "Max! No!" it sent shivers down my spine. And don't get me started on the "follow the trail of blood to your baby" sequence.

well in Fallout 3, i was randomly wandering when a deathclaw Sneak attacked me, since then i always do a 180' ariound me to be sure nothing was Following me

In fallout 3 when I was looking for a quest or anything, just wandering around...lalala, then as I was walking I went between some rocks, so I just kept walking then I heard a Death Claw, I looked behind me and it wasent there, I look in front of me and it jumped me. It was just creepy.

Everyones having issues with Death Claws. Seems to be causing most of the psychosis in the gaming community today.

I would have to say the sneaky Death Claw or the First time you run into a Fire Ant in Grayditch. I was level 2 - 3 and ran in with a baseball bat. You can imagine the shock.
