Oblivion. Sneaking through Jakben Imbel's house, hoping not to be seen. While creeping about, it is silent.

I open a door and creep through. Silence. I creep into it. Silence. Suddenly, the camera spins around due to his manservant finding me and initiating dialogue. Made me jump like hell.

Doing the Those! sidequest in Fallout 3, I approaced a door, opened it and immidately a scientist initiated a conversation. I think I might've let out a quick, girly scream.

I didn't expect to run into anyone in there, okay? Even the game thought it was scary, allowing me to tell the scientist "I frightened you?! I almost crapped my pants!"
First time I went through Fallout 3, I had a high Perception to avoid times like that. Luckily, I noticed the green "Look, a friendly dude is just over there!" icon before I opened the door, so the shock was dulled.

Once, a long time ago, playing Battlefield 1942 (and I'm talking back around when it was released) I walked into one of the bunkers overlooking the beach on the D-Day map, and the bunker was really dark and all of a sudden there was a German right in front of me and shot me and made me jump.

That's the only crappy story I can think of to fit this topic, really.

Portal made me jump atleast once. I was really having a hard time with GLaDOS, his voice just sinks into your head.
I agree, there were various bits in Portal that got me feeling uneasy...

In fallout 3, I was going to be a Christ-like adventurer, so I turned my perception all the way down, it is, the most, frightening thing to happen when a Deathclaw whose existence was previously unknown shows up outta nowhere and makes swishing noises right behind you.

Also the escape the vault as a baby glitch, if you die as a baby, then you're all stretched out like silly putty, and that's... disturbing, if not hilarious.

I found the near-ending of portal (no spoilers here) to be rather suspensful, and I was in suspense the whole time until the climactic battle, which was just awesome.
Yea right towards the end freaked me out because you were always walking around and there was like nothing happening.

This actually just happened to me within the last 30min. I am playing Black on my 360 because i have nothing better to do. I am actually only on the second level, the one where you are alone in the dark woods. I was switching guns after a brief firefight, and when my arm reached over to cock the gun it scared the shit out of me, I thought there was a terrorist next to me so I unloaded an entire clip on thin air... Lol

You cannot grasp the true nature of Giygas' attack!
The thought of that is rather unsettling, to say the least. I kinda wish I hadn't had that fight's ending spoiled before I got around to playing, though. It would've been EPIC instead of just being awesome.
Try terrifying more than epic.
It gets even worse when you find out where the inspiration for this battle came from.
Ah yes....THAT film the creator saw when he was a kid.
Didn't he use lines from the film for Giygas' words in battle?

As for something scary that shouldn't have scared me....Pyron from Darkstalkers scared the shit out of me as a kid.

I have never ever seen a scorpion in real life, and I am so damned scared of these insects. Now imagine the feelings I had to go through when these ghastly little monsters were trying to hunt me down in Fallout 3.

Hell, not even a Deathclaw gave me that feeling of desperation in a game. Next on the list, cockroaches.

That piano in Super Mario 64 always scared the crap out of me.
"Oh look, a piano." *CLANG*CLANG* "OH SHI-"

Weegee is still creepy as hell.

No matter what nightmarish things occur in Silent Hill or Fatal Frame, very little instills quite as much creeping terror as the Tails Doll. It's something about his eyes. And... That gem...

The Well/Temple of Shadows music [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=offOj6D_jbQ] from Ocarina of Time sends shivers down my spine even today.

Ness...

Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness,
Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness,
Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness,
Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness...

I... Feel... H...a...p...p...y...

Nothing, not the Tails Doll, not even death itself is as terrifying as Giygas in his true and ultimate form. If not from the perspective of a ten-year old used to the silly cartoon villains of Earthbound, think of it this way:

Four children, forced to forsake their bodies in order to save the world, are trapped in a void of swirling darkness, an almighty power with little more than the instincts of fear and hunger. Their attacks do nothing to it, their attempts to bring it to reason completely ignored, answered with disturbing whispers and attacks so powerful, so maddening, that the human mind can't even begin to comprehend it. Out of options, they pray. They pray for their lives, hoping to whoever or whatever can hear them for some glimmer of hope. And for a while, it works. The darkness recoils, and becomes even less stable. But in time, even the prayers do nothing, swallowed by the void. Eventually, the game calls upon the player themselves to hope for the salvation of these children. But until then, they are trapped in a madness of sight and sound, hearing terrible things amongst the utter discord.

seeing how it made some people complain, i think a some people are afraid of the full frontal nudity old guy from the GTA4 expansion.

Also, whenever some loudmouth retard gets killed twice in a row in DotA i'm afraid he's gonna leave and fuck up the game

Walking into the "Death Claw Sanctuary" at level 5. I was only expecting a few raiders...
Everyones having issues with Death Claws. Seems to be causing most of the psychosis in the gaming community today.

I would have to say the sneaky Death Claw or the First time you run into a Fire Ant in Grayditch. I was level 2 - 3 and ran in with a baseball bat. You can imagine the shock.
well death claws, bears, giant rad scorpions have all done it to me
why when im moving now il do a 180' to see if im being Followed

Drugs? Lots and lots of drugs?
Ha, I wish.
As a child, the creator once stumbled into a movie theatre that was showing an R18+ movie. The scene he happened to see was a rape scene. This scarred him for life, and was the inspiration for Giygas' "dialogue" during the battle.

Also speaking seeing how RE4 has ben mentioned a few times i cam e to think the part whe're you're beeing chased in a small hallway by one of the 2 mutant thingys that follow the little rennisance (i know i g2 l2spell) dude. It is kidna creepy, it's chasing you and you cannot kill it, only slow it down by popping liquid nitrogen cans near it.

Aah and the monster in the lake... was so not prepared for when it swallowed me off the pier the first time :p

RE4 was quite an awesome game actually

Psychonauts: Milla's dance party. A child's room.

HELL.

"Millaaaa, whyy did yoooou let usss diiiiiie?"

Later, after the brain-bleach session, I felt nostalgic and played Rayman 2: The Great Escape. I had clean forgotten about the freaking Cave of Bad Dreams (particularly the spit covered chase down the slimy slope- AS VIEWED THROUGH THE BAD GUY'S TEETH).

And lastly, several bits in Second Sight were profoundly screwed up (although there was something rather therapeutic about possessing soldiers and throwing them down sewers).

GINORMOUS Wolfspider in Arx Fatalis. Even the normal sized wolfspider (about as tall as a dog) scared the shit out of me, don't they think about people with arachnophobia?

Also the rabbit-sized spiders in Penumbra: Overture. They don't LOOK that scary, but there are many of them, they're fast and they are usually found in areas where you don't want to come across them (ie air ducts and various other tight spaces)
How about the freaking WORM in Penumbra: Overture?

Oh wait, it's a horror game, it doesn't count. Dang.

Didn't think much of the worm, other than "shit, gotta run!" I'm really not scared of big ugly monsters, it's just the damn spiders.
