Slightly off topic, but i seriously despair whenever someone calls Hot Fuzz a British classic. There are so SO many MUCH better British films than Hot Fuzz.

(Shaun of the Dead is pretty good though)

Scott Pilgrim hasn't opened in the UK yet. It has an 80% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a Metacritic score of 68. Edgar Wright is the director, which means that it's likely to be one of the biggest hits of the year here in the UK (Wright being a very successful and well known director here in his home country, thanks to his work with Simon Pegg).

So don't worry. It'll be a success, just give it a bit more time.

Sorry to be a dork but isn't making art it's own reward, if they made $10 off the movie would it matter? surely trying to achieve money ends up tainting art in the Expendables? When art is made specifically for money you get the Expendables, when it is made purely for the writers satisfaction, you get Clerks, I know which one i'll still be raving about in 30 years

Oh and people saying they don't want ot see it because it has elements of romance in it can fuck off. I can't think of a film in recent years that DIDN'T have romance in it, even the fucking Expendable had a shit romance sub plot. All the Expendable has going for it is it's hyped up cast and once the first people have seen it and found out its shit it'll drop off the charts, Scott Pilgrim will have greater word of mouth and will build up a following.
You seem a little bit angry. Let me break it down for you so that you can at least try to understand why some of us aren't really that excited about Scott Pilgrim. Essentially, we're being faced with this:

Awkward video game dude chasing girl so incredibly above his level and getting her.
-or-
Enough action stars to make at least five movies, all working together to shoot guns, punch each other around and blow crap up.

I've seen far, far too many movies with awkward, hipster douches making clever and witty references while chasing a girl that would never, ever stoop to their level. The Expendables may not earn any awards for originality, let alone having a brilliant story or the best actors, but what it does have is shit getting blown up. And shit getting blown up has a timeless quality to it.
But it's not even good explosions! A film where Jason Statham is the best actor is a poor film, no other way of putting it. Sorry if want intelligent film making and not just explosions, if not then just give Michael Bay the fucking Oscar.

Michael Cera is actaully a good actor, he's just type cast in every film, but this time he's the hipster loser and you're not supossed to like him initially.

Successful troll is successful. I think this guy deserves a medal since his post was so original.
I'm not trolling, the guy is just a shit actor, he's awful. I would have gone to see the film if it had used someone else as the main protaganist.
you should see youth in revolt, Cera proving that with the right source material that boy can act

I saw The Expendables for one single reason and I will not lie: I was high with my mates and we wanted to see shit blow up. It worked, kept us all entertained + it's refreshing to see that after so many years of medical advancement, Stallone's jaw is still not fixed.

Deary me, post that on a forum like Empire and see what reaction you get, both Shaun and Hot Fuzz were fantastic. I find it hard to decide which I like more. They are both in my list of favorite films.

Both are amazing movies. Also nice avatar, Dr.Hobo is not amused (I'm a massive VG Cats fan).

It's just opening weekend, doesn't it have a month or so left in theatures to make up for its production cost?

Spending $60 million on a film with a relatively small target audience (then releasing it on the same weekend as The Expendables) is a horrendously silly idea.

And are you really suprised that The Expendables did better? Sure, they're both pretty awesome but The Expendables has a much, much, much wider appeal.

Oh my god, the movie didn't surpass its budget during the opening weekend! What will we do? WHAT WILL WE DOOOO?!

Also, who didn't expect The Expendables to make so much more? I mean, it's awesome.

Make a thread whining about how some other movie with the action hero cast to end all action hero casts raked in more money?

...you're really surprised?

An obscure comic book movie starring a bunch of indie teen actors directed by a mostly obscure-to-American-Audiences director that doesn't follow traditional means of film making didn't do too well at the box office.

Yeah, that's really just doomed to failure when it comes to sales.

The Expendables was great. Just pure action with AMAZING hand-to-hand scenes. Who goes to the movies to watch deep drama films with all the people fiddling with wrappers and stuff?

STAR WARS IS A FUCKING ROMANCE FILM WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT! Get over yourselves, try watching a film outside of the typical nerd circle of sci-fi and fantasy, don't be afraid to try someting new just because it's new. Yes there's romance but come on it's not exactly gonna be like 50 First Dates, there will be funny jokes and there will be action sequences, at least 7 of them because there's 7 evil ex's!
Actually Ramona dated twins and they fight together so its really 6 fights.

Unless you count the end where he fights the same ex twice

Also people should not PM me with their opinion. Just write it on the thread.

Somewhere in the thread is a post I can no longer find so I apologize for not giving credit. Here is some ad-Libing.

"You people ***** about Michael Cera playing the same roll over and over, and yet The Expendables, a movie that is only successful because it is full of actors who are great in their rolls whatever they may be, but they ALSO play the same roll all the time."

Damn hippo-crates.

This was always going to happen. I don't think Scott Pilgrim would ever have done as well as a lot of people were hoping, because once the first group who only knew about it from the trailers had been to see it, word would quickly have spread about how geek oriented it was, and it would have fallen anyway.

Also, while the Expendables wouldn't have looked like anything special coming out in 1988, nowadays quirky geek oriented comedy/drama things with Michael Cera in them are becoming more and more the norm, and the superhero thing is also being overworn, and the general public often prefer their movies simpler and to the point. No trying to mash up superheroes and quirky teen dramas, just keep it with bullets and broad shouldered men. Oddly enough, the most generic film of the year is also the most different, because the genre it is generic to hasn't been seen in nearly two decades.

So I say well done to the Expendables, because I think it understood the market a lot better, which is what you need to do if you want to pull big bucks.

And I honestly don't see the appeal of the expendables. Yeah all the great actors,
You just answered your own question :p

OT: I guess it's a combination of the Cera-haters and the fact it's going up against a film with an amazing cast (which, let's be honest, the "casuals" are more likely to want to see).

Ah well. I haven't seen either yet, I want to see both...but I need money.
That.
Want to watch the movie. But Michael Cera really gets on my tits. As in, I'd stand up 20 minutes in and try to put my fist through his ten-foot face.
