Friday, Scott Pilgrim and The Expendables opened, and Scott Pilgrim got DESTROYED. The Expendables grossed around $35 million, while Scott Pilgrim was took in around $10.5 million.

The most crushing news of all is that it apparently took $60 million to produce.

This CANNOT end well.
So what?
The studio gonna pull it from the cinemas? Burn the remaining copies and pretend it never happened?

Nah, the only real consequence is that there wont be made any sequels. And that's a good thing.

Anyways, I'm looking forwards to seeing both Scott Pilgrim and the Expendables. On Bluray.

I saw both on the same day back-to-back. The Expendables was not a good film, but it was fun nonetheless. I don't think it's much of a surprise though, Scott Pilgrim was marketed to a much smaller demographic.

You know, to everyone who doesn't know anything about scott pilgrim except for its premise, we have a review of the film like three clicks away on the escapist, don't knock it before you try it assholes.

Meh, I wasn't interested in either movie and this in its own was predictible. I suppose people the publishers did this because they hoped the Scott Pilgrim fans would come see their movie over the Expendables.

I'm sure they'll get more viewers to come when word gets around that the Expendables isn't a good movie.

Scott Pilgrim looks...interesting. A bit...idk, not sure if it seems pretentious or if they're trying to be hip or honestly I'm not sure don't know much about it. Expendables...idk, some of us guys just want a guy movie for a guys' night out lol (as revenge to our girls for all their Twilights, gr...and those movies sure didn't get great ratings either).

Yeah, I don't understand the appeal of The Expendables, either.

All the greatest action stars of the past 20 years, in one action movie, as a culmination/parody of all the big action movies of the 80's?

Yeah, that's much less interesting and appealing than ANOTHER MOVIE about a hipster douchbag chasing a "bi-curious" chick with crazy hair. Oh, and it's based on an incredibly obscure comic book. Because indie comics have huge mass appeal.

I'm not saying that these descriptions are the actual nature of these movies. I'm just saying that it's how they've been advertised. I'll probably see both of them, but if you're actually surprised that The Expendables made more money on opening weekend than Scott Pilgrim, you might want to schedule yourself for an appointment with a neurologist. Why, you ask? Well, if they realize that you're brain dead early enough, they may still be able to harvest your organs to save a life.
This is pretty much the reason I'm not going to see Scott Pilgrim. I knew absolutely nothing about it until just recently when people started talking up the movie, and it seems sort of interesting, but do I really want to go and see another awkward dude chasing the girl? Or would I rather see the action heroes I grew up with together in one film kicking arse? With a Jet Li fight scene, no less?

I'll try to see both, but The Expendables seems like the better choice from where I'm standing.

I resent you implying that I'm not a pompous elitist know-it-all though, these are badges I wear with pride.
So you're a teenager/uni student that thinks they're one of the few people that thinks for themselves? Where is that old picture of all those people on the train thinking the exact same thing again? I really should save that for future reference.

Also, you seem to have forgotten the vitally important parts from what you quoted. You know, the horse's ass, dipshit, douchebag part of the title that goes with being a pompous, elitist know-it-all?

O just don't see the point. I know he's gonna get the girl. He'll beat like 5-6 of the BFs, do something stupid, have the girl get mad at him, girl goes back to main bad guy, Cera realizes he Dun Goofed, beats 2nd last bad guy, girl realizes he's serious business, main bad guy whoops Cera, Cera pulls some BS stunt that wins the fight, Cera gets girl.

I also know that The Expendables win. But it's atleast not 1 1/2 hours of teenage awkwardness. If I wanted that I'd record myself talking to the girl I like with me occasionally lifting firecrackers and throwing them at the screen. Then I'd get my friend to periodically phone me and say a random video game reference. Boom. Same result.

I give Cera credit for being good at the whole awkward think, but I'm not gonna sit though the same thing over and over.

I saw the Expendables today and it was good. There was an old man next to me who got really into the show and it seemed like he was having a blast. I can't wait to see Scott Pilgrim though it looks good too.

It's a real shame. From what I've heard, the Expendables was pretty crap, where as Scott Pilgrim was one of the best films of the year.

I saw both the expendables and scott pilgrim this weekend in the UK (advanced screenings). They are very different films and I can clearly see how the expendables is going to attract a bigger audience. It was very fun and full of action but the random plot and cheesy one liners took a bit away from it :p I would give it a 3/5.

Scott Pilgrim is definitely more niche, its incredibly random but very entertaining, funny and visually awesome. I would give it 4/5.

Its a shame but I think that expendables is more mainstream and hence will make more money. Scott Pilgrim has the potential to catch up as it will most definitely be more critically acclaimed. Next weekend will be better for scott after people read the mediocre reviews for expendables and the excited reviews for scott pilgrim.

Holy sh*t, are you guys kidding me?! You're judging Scott Pilgrim vs. The World on a 30-second advertisement and Michael-f*cking-Cera (who by the way, plays kind of a despicable character that you're ALLOWED to hate) all of you NEED to see this movie. I'm not saying this is the best movie ever made, but it's one of the better movies ever made. If you've A) ever played an 80's video game, B) interested in extremely well done, fast-paced action scenes, C) want to see a movie that actually provides a new and interesting take on modern relationships in the context of today's wired generation world, then you NEED to see this movie. Come on, ALL OF YOU are the target audience for this movie, and you refuse to see it. WHY?!

And for all of you that hate Michael Cera "because he's lame", a lot of us are hanging out on The Escapist commenting on online forums with people you've never met and know nothing about, and yet probably know more about then a lot of the people in your immediate area. So what exactly does that say about us?

I believe the correct response is "WELL DUH!!!" and here is why. You have 2 movies that are trying to do 1 thing. Appeal to their niche fanbase. In one corner you have a graphic novel that is how old exactly? And in the other corner you have a movie with most of the most popular action heroes to date. Who have been making these types of movies for the past 25-30 years. Now which one do you think will have the bigger fanbase?
