You'd be surprised how few of my friends have heard of Rise Against...that's mostly because they get little-to-no-airtime in Britain.

Other than that, my music tastes are pretty well-known, alas.

They used to be smaller but after their last album.....grr
I hate them now they are mainstream............LOL not
In the UK, they're still under the radar a little. Appeal to Reason charted at #67 over here.

So this is one of those threads where you can be different and have some level of pretentiousness. How you don't listen to the bands that "everyone else" listens. Quite a huge majority of the bands that exist are not "well-known" if you think about it.

If anyone is into i guess kinda more alternative metal try Sydonia. other than that some lesser known bands i listen to are

Burn the priest (doesnt exist anymore, renamed and reformed into Lamb of God. Original self titled album is pure awesome).

Meshuggah.

Weezer.

Primus. Primus i think is well known to the more alternative crowd/ muso's. General public has no idea who they are.

The Kinks. What a wonderful band, it's a shame no one appreciates some of their music. Hell, half the songs I look up for them aren't even on YouTube D:

EDIT: Actually I found one of their songs

Such a shame, they are pretty awesome. :p

Cage the Elephant. They're the guys who sang the Borderlands theme song.
Their album is also amazing :D

I'd heard of them long before Borderlands, but still.

Also, this does seem to be a highly subjective thing. Where I'm from Dropkick Murphy's are pretty popular.

Here is my $0.02

Foals
Regina Spektor
Cajun Dance Party
Bright Eyes (They ARE popular with a large fan base, but barely anyone I know has heard of them)
Envy & Other Sins
Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly
Justice (probably made a lot more popular by the Assassin's Creed 2 trailer now)
Mumford & Sons (popular in England at the moment, not sure about over the ocean)
Trigger Finger
Robert Randolph & The Family Band
Whisky Cats

Well let's see...

3 Inches Of Blood. Power metal from Canada. Quite good.
Wolfchant. Bavarian pagan melodic death metal. Very awesome.
Subway to Sally. another German band, but less obscure than Wolfchant. In German-speaking countries they are actually relatively well known, they even were the German contender at the Eurovision contest 2 years ago. Goth rock and metal with a lot of medieval elements.
In Extremo. The "more hardcore" version of StS. Same style, but faster songs and with less metal and more rock elements. Lighter on the bass and have a bagpipe in favor of Subway's violin. Also a lot more deep lyrics borrowed heavily from classic German and Swedish literature and poetry.
Fintroll. Finnish folk metal. Don't listen to it that much but always very fun, even if you can't understand the text (like me)

Thrice. I am the only person i know who has heard of them
No you are not.
I am in fucking love with Thrice.

Two of my favorites are The Lion And The Wolf [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkCn2r5gv58] and Artist In The Ambulance [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXoDtkliSgY].
I am vaguely aware those are probably the ones "everyone likes", but I don't much care.
They rock.
You are the first person i have met who has ever heard of them. non of my friends, even though we share almost identical music tastes, has ever heard of them.
My personal favourites are Deadbolt (great for forts and stuff in oblivion) and Ultra Blue
Yeah i've heard of them too dude, can't say i've listened to alot of their music but their pretty cool.

One of my favorite bands is In Fear And Faith, not many people seem to have heard of them really.
