Band I love that very few people know about is Violent Work of Art, one of their best songs is wars to win and wars to loose by.

Faunts, they did the credits song for MassEffect, it made the ending amazing.

Korpiklaani. Awesome scandinavian folk metal.
Korpiklaani and Finntroll might be the best things from Finland that I know of.
VODKA! Also Týr are rather good.

The Decemberists, Seasick Steve, the xx.
I'd never heard of Seasick Steve til he was on Top Gear, I still don't listen to his music but I'd imagine his popularity's flown since that appearance (and good on him).

The XX on the other hand are bloody epic, I cannot get enough of their debut and I'm already waiting on a sophomore...

Mention goes out to Spoon, Super Furry Animals and Neon Neon, TV On the Radio, Vampire Weekend (who may well be very popular by now) and Simian/Simian Mobile Disco.
...Not saying they're obscure but all of the above deserve FAR more attention than they get.

Alter Bridge
Jaded Sun
12 Stones
Eden's Curse
Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.
Glyder
Greg Holden
Julia Nunes
Idlewild
Scars on Broadway
Seether

I'm sure there are more, as well...
Though some of the ones I've listed may be more well known elsewhere, just that no-one I know has heard of them. Shame.

Iced Earth, Sonata Arctica, Blind Guardian and Demons & Wizards are the major ones I listen to which is very hit or miss on who's heard of it (more people I know have heard of Iced Earth than the others, only because I'm in the US and they're a US band).
I listen to all those bands. Have you heard of my even more unknown bands that I posted? (Evergrey and Echoes of Eternity)

I also listen to Epica, After Forever, Symphony X, Kamelot, Lunatica, Dream Theater, Mastodon, Rhapsody, Shadow Gallery, Lacuna Coil, etc.

I've actually met Dream Theater and own all their albums. I also have an autographed album and poster from Echoes of Eternity, they're my favourite 'new' band (their debut album was in 2007 I believe).

I was going to say Streetlight Manifesto, but its awesome to see fans on the forum (so I guess its not as lesser-known). Ska fans are few and far between in these parts. I love Tomas's Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution as well.

Other than that:
Flogging Molly
The Pogues
The Faint
Dimitri from Paris
Bran Van 3000
The Servant
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
Eels
Flaming Lips
Stellamara

I'm not sure what constitutes "lesser known," but I've never heard these bands on the radio outside of NPR/college stations, and even a handful of times at that.

Man Thrice are awesome. I love the Alchemy Index albums. I can't think of any, maybe Dimmu Borgir.

Adversary, The Damage Addict Orchestra and Engel. I bet one gazillion dollars that nobody here knows of the second one.

Solstafir.
Those looking for an awesome band from Iceland look no further than Solstafir

EDIT - Fixed to say Iceland, not Ireland.

Frankenstein drag queens anyone?
I know them, got into them after listening to Murderdolls. Also a Devin Townsend fan to the max.

As for lesser known bands I like, how about Salem, Orphaned Land, also Paradise Lost
Do you know about what happened between Salem and Varg Vikernes?
