You do upgrade consoles, its called buying a new one, in 5 years do you really think you will still be playing the same games on the same console? NO. consoles dont get better over time and computers dont get better over time, you'l have bought the new nintendo console, the new microsoft console, and the new sony console, but me, all I will do is buy a better graphics card.
... of course you'll be stuck playing only Microsoft and multi-platform games, which leaves a lot to be desired.

You see no exclusives that give a reason to own a PS3, yet you own a Wii?

Huh?

OT: Don't own one, wish I did - might sell the 360 (got a PC anyway, which is better and gets the majority of 360 games I'm interested in) so I can then play the awesome-o looking Uncharted 2.

Anyway, if it has the exclusives you want get it.

If not and there's loads on the 360/PC/Wii (seriously?) that you want, then spend the money on those.

Heres a idea! How about put the 500$ in your savings account and save yourself a bunch of hate and anger! And if you dont have one make one!
how does considering or even buying an ps3 resolve in hate and anger.

other than that, putting them in a saving account? really?, i think this is the first time i have seen responsible and kinda boring advice on this site.

screw the ps3, buy heroin for the money and get a teenager pregnant.
Well, I'm a girl and it's been a good seven years since I was a teenager...

Thanks everyone for your oppinions and advice. I think I will invest in that PS3, but consider it as a blu-ray player that incidentally can play games. :)

The Playstation 3 is a good console and will continue to have a good shelf-life, (if it keeps on getting cheaper, and keeps hauling in the exclusives).
The online features are a little haphazard, but in general its a good choice.
The PS3 can play blue-ray discs, the 360 can't. If you are interested in blue-ray and large disc space, then the PS3 gets brownie points.

For that reason the PS3 will not be my platform of choice this year, (I already have one, and a 360, but I'm not going to buy games for the PS3 this year, (except maybe one or two exclusives)).
I am getting the most out of my 360 while its still around. Its the exact reason I have an xbox (the old one) in my university room and not a PS2.

The PS2 is very popular, even today, and the ol' xbox has faded quite a lot from public face.
Now, the best games on the PS2 can still fetch very high prices pre-owned still, but the advantage of having the xbox, is that the games are generally very cheap, (barring the rare games, and the cult classics (e.g. the bioware trio)).

I got A nice sizable xbox collection spanning over 40-50 games, for the exchange of about 3-5 ps3/360 games.
Even though I am no graphics whore, alot of the xbox games still look good by todays standards, (especially Team Ninja games and Panzer Dragoon Orta). (Some companies need to realise its not always about the hardware. Good design and use stylistic techniques can make a game stand out so much more! (Look at how nice Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix looks))

In a couple of years time, there may be an xbox successor. The PS3 may still be going stong, so the 360 games might get quite cheap, and that is when I strike! (XD)
In my case the PS2 is the console that filled my games library and I've never had a problem finding cheap games for it. Infact, I've never walked into a store to see more preowned xbox games than PS2. I've never had an interest in owning an xbox, so it's still kinda funny 360 is my console of choice this generation. Sony have really let me down.

Hey op, I just found this today on Destructoid, but it's an interesting looking JRPG coming out as a PS3 exclusive this summer that has a beautiful watercolor look to it. I can't guarantee quality though, as this game is news to me. Thought you might want to take a look at it thought.

Something wasn't cleared up earlier about the PSN premium subscription.
Online gaming is still going to be FREE. The subscription gives those members exclusive content on the PSN (Betas, early purchases, premium addons, etc)

Unless I didn't read things right.

are you trying to be funny? maybe you've forgotten about Valve, Blizzard, real time stragety games, Indy game, REAL first person shooters, Neverwinter Knights, Mech Warrior, should I go on? YES I WILL, mods, id software, Wolfenstein 3D, emulators, STEAM? you know that thing? the one that has thousands of games for sale, digital downloads, amazing sales, just last christmas season everything was 66% off.
A list that doesn't include Demon's Souls = FAIL

Seriously though aside from WoW and game mods, both PS3 and 360 have all that crap or better... like Mechwarrior, you actually think that's a point in favor of PC. That's sad. Armored Core, much? Chomehounds?

A good 'D Pad' and a hell load of amusing games. Less annoying people online and it's start-up screen is sexy, in comparison to the scatty 360 one.

I'm going to recieve a neat $500 soon and thought now may be the time to invest in a PS3. I have every other console, but am feeling this hole in my collection. The problem is I don't feel as depressed by this predicament as I thought I would when it first hit the shelves. I'm yet to see a PS3 exclusive that demands I own the console, but then I thought perhaps I'm not trying hard enough.

I enjoy JRPGs and adventure games. From the get go I always said I'd get a PS3 when Tekken 6 and FFXIII came out, but as we know, fate, good marketing and a grab for cash stepped in to ensure my 360 would play them. The only thing it has going for it now is Versus XIII, and who knows when that'll be released.

So, if you love the PS3, tell me why someone like me should own one, with emphasis on the awesome games I am yet to trip over.
Valkyria Chronicles, White Knight Chronicles, Uncharted 2, inFamous (man that sounds like a boy band), FFXIII Versus, Final Fantasy: Dissidia is supposedly coming to consoles and I doubt it's gonna get ported to the 360, Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time...

This is coming from someone who owns a 360 and not a PS3 too.

In my case the PS2 is the console that filled my games library and I've never had a problem finding cheap games for it. Yeah I was in the same boat, I was totally gung ho for the PS3 but then when it came out it was 600 dollarrs!? and when I finally did have money the 360 seemed to have the bigger, cheaper library. After last year however, the PS3 has really come into it's own and has some exsclusives that put it on equal footing with the 360. If I had your 500 quid i'd pick up one of the new PS3 slims and roll the remaining 100-200 dollars into Valkyria Chronicles, Infamous, and Ratchet and Clank.

i could say there are no exclusive games on the 360 that make me want to buy it
then i could say they are all overrated
gears of war
mass effect
crackdown
heck even halo 3 wasn't as good as the xbox ones
you see, it is opinion

Uncharted 2...enough said...but, just in case it wasn't enough, I'll list a couple of other things.
inFamous (This game is one of my favorites of 2009)
Demon's Souls (Haven't played it yet, but I have heard a lot of good things about it)
Killzone 2 (If you like shooters then you owe it to yourself to play this game. It is a nice change of pace from MW2)
Blu-Ray Player (If you do not have one already then this is probably your best option)
God of War 3
The fact is, Unchared 2 was a decent, hell, a great, game, but not enough to sell a console by itself. I'd give it 8.5 to 9 out of 10, and it stand as a good action game, but the final boss fight alone is laughable enough to not make it perfect.
Haven't actually played inFamous
Demon's Souls is a great game, but not for the average gamer
KZ2 was an overly generic shooter, I'd give it 6.5 to 7 out of 10.
Blu-Ray is nice
God Of War 3 is also decent, but I wasnt overly impressed by the demo.
People buy the 360 for Halo, why shouldn't they buy the PS3 for Uncharted?

Also, it just comes down to whether you like the exclusives, because I grew up with a PS2, a PS3 was a natural choice.

Well, I just got my PS3 and I own every system on the market. Wanna know something? I love it!!! It's a fantastic little machine (okay, maybe not little but big isn't bad). It's a lot quieter then the XBOX. The processor packs some immense power. It definitely has the best hardware. One big thing is that you are NOT NICKLE-AND-DIMED. For the Wii you have to buy all these expensive peripherals, for XBOX you have to PAY for a special network card (why they couldn't make a standard USB card work is beyond my comprehension) and the custom hard drives are not only limited in size but they are WAY overpriced. The PS3 truly DOES only do everything. The hard drive is removable, but you don't need a custom after market drive. It takes a standard laptop drive, so you can easily put a 500GB in it and turn it into an all-in-one HD video center/music player/gaming machine. Oh yeah, and you can buy PS1 classics for only a couple bucks (something huge like FFVII is about ten, but still, not bad considering the price of PS1 games on eBay). So really, all who rag on the system have never quite used it. The Wi-Fi is built in (with the exception of the original core model, which isn't too common anyway) and the network play is free (though it's not as good as LIVE, but still, good over all).

Trust me, it's worth a shot. The SIXAXIS is nice in it's own right as well. Adds a little bit of control variety. Oh yeah, and the graphics are "true HD" if that sort of thing excites you. All the games are blu-ray based. Installations are brief if they happen at all. Chances of hardware failure are slim as well. Failure rate is about 5%ish, compared to 30% for the XBOX. It's a great system and I think you'll enjoy it a lot.
