I found Resident Evil 3 better than number 2 (But not better than 1 and both 1+3 were better than 5, have not played 4, if it's like 5 I won't like it)
Mass Effect 2 was funner than 1 in my opinion.
Red Dead Redemption... Ok I never finished RD Revolver... damn boss just wouldn't die.

Any other sequals I have played were worse or equal to the originals.

Movies: The Lord of the Rings all got progressively better IMHO, Aliens, Empire Strikes Back, Last Crusade

Even though it was released a mere year later, WarCraft II was superior to WarCraft I in every conceivable way. Story, art style, music, gameplay, UI...the sequel preety much put the original to shame in every way possible.

I am sure there are more examples, but I think WarCraft II is a perfect example of a game that really did far outclass the original.

Mass Effect 2 (Cooler story, improved gunfighting, lots of fun)

Sure this has been said many many times before but Mass Effect 2 was so much better then Mass Effect 1. I felt more drawn into the story and the combat was more fluid as well. I also loved how we got to see the darker side of the universe and how paragon Shepard was a bit more bad ass.
As for movies that's easy, Return of the King was amazing compared to the other 2 LoTR movies, yea Fellowship and Two Towers were good but not as good.
