@Schizzy I've seen the same generic character used by people several times. They keep the same name, appearance for the most part, a general back story that they only slightly alter to fit the background of the universe and a few other things as well. I'm not sure why someone would just use the same thing over and over again. It really defeats the purpose of writing.
Now there are instances where reusing a character makes sense. Right now I'm in the writing competition Ratings War VI. The character that I made for it could be easily reused for a totally different story, since the basis for the competition doesn't allow for as much character growth and development as I would like. Therefore in order to have the character reach the point I want him too, since five posts of writing as them at the most isn't enough; I will likely reuse him again to reach that point. It's the idea that throwing away a good character after only a short use doesn't seem fair.
Another instance could be in a reboot of a thread. I know some RPs die fast so after a few months and some of refinement they are relaunched. Now if you have already made a character for the previous version that still fits the refined version, using them again would make sense as well. Of course refining and changing the character would always best as well since in a few months your writing's probably improved, but it would still make sense because the character was made for the intention of being played in said role play.
As a side note, the one character I reused - and upgraded - was set in the same universe for both RPs she was in. This ties in with element's mention of 'instances where reusing a character makes sense'.
Reusing characters for several different universes smacks me as a little lazy. I figure half the fun to RPing is character creation. But to each their own, I guess?
Admittedly, I am unfamiliar with using characters for competition writing, therefore can't truly grasp its dynamics
I understand in a thread reboot, it'd be a shame to throw away a character. In this case, I'd consider it less of recycling and more of a transfer.
All this RP talk makes me wanna join another RP... one that will actually finish.
@Schiz: I've never actually been in a role-play that has been given a proper conclusion. Most of them died due to inactivity, while some were rebooted or the series continued.
That's kinda sad, really, now that I think about it.
@mortis: while he can't really say words that you can understand yet its still much better than me and my whatever hideous noise that I make >.>
I must steal his skill.......
