Sakura Kyoko. The first one targeted, the first one saved. Perhaps there was something to be gained until the time came she was targeted again.
I approach as she walks down a road during the day, a hint of discomfort in her movement. Getting a good first impression is key. Good thing I have done my homework.
"Greetings", I say in a casual, but not overly friendly tone. "You must be Sakura Kyoko."
That got her attention.
"What's it to you, old man?" she replies in an aggravated tone. "Can't you see I'm not in the mood for talking, old creep?"
"I am Ikari Gendo." I continue, ignoring her remarks, "I heard that you were attacked by the Kira. It is good to that you were not seriously injured."
"Would you like an apple or two? I got these for lunch, but I horribly misjudged the amount and ended up with more than I can handle. So, will you have some? I don't like wasting food."
She eyes me for a moment, and then speaks. "Ok, old man. Let's go sit somewhere."
We sit on a bench by the side of the road. Between her systematic devouring of the apples, we exchange few, but meaningful words.
"So you say that the tomboyish girl wearing that green jacket saved you? I could hardly imagine someone like her to be good at providing medical assistance."
"Yeah, I know. Wouldn't have believed it either if it didn?t happen in from of my eyes. It's like she had some sort of healing magic. Ha! Like that would help against the witches!"
"Hmm, I would say the ability to heal the wounds of your allies is a good thing in battle, wouldn't you agree?"
"Hmpf! A magical girl lives by herself for herself! That's how we work! Someone with no fighting ability would quickly be eaten alive by the witches."
"You are alone, then? No one out there that cares for you?"
"Not completely... I still have Funs-kun? What about you, old man?"
"I..." a painful sigh of exasperation escapes me, "Am all alone, I?m afraid."
"It's lonely being by yourself, isn't it?"
A moment of silence passes as my mind wanders for a brief moment. I reminisce of a time old, a time where my life had meaning. In the invocation of these memories I am reminded of my purposed and so speak up.
"Tell me, have you heard of the Midnight Channel?" seeing her bewilderment, I continue. "It is said that, if you stare at a TV as the time reaches midnight, your soulmate will appear in it. I'm obviously too old to care trying it out, but you... you might find a use of it."
"Hah! A channel that reveals your true love! Don't make me laugh."
"As you say. I am merely bringing it to your attention."
"Whatever. Anyway, gotta get going. See ya, old man."
She starts walking down the road, when she turns back and smiles at me.
"Thanks for the apples, by the way! You aren't that bad for an old geezer!"
And then there was silence.
