Because the only way to illicit an emotional response out of an audience is with relatable characters that drive a plot. It's really a shame that they tried to use a different technique. Because if they'd chosen to use relatable characters that drive a complicated plot, they would have captured the attention of every viewer and really gotten the same emotional ideas across.

Shame really. There's a really good game filled with lots of towns and funny cliche merchants, brigands, and no-nonsense bar-maidens that would have really instilled a sense of deep loneliness in the game, hidden beneath all that empty, lifeless land.
That's why I edited that post almost immediately.

But this game didn't need lots of people, just one bobbing up and down on a horse would have been something more than the action figure I was playing as.

I loved SotC, but its really only good if you stop and admire it. Try this, as your riding to your next enemy, look around. Look out in the distance and try to look for striped lizards or round fruit. If you explore and look around for these things, then you will start to see why people like it.
...
Or at least that's my opinion.
(PS: I'm not saying the gathering quests are the only thing that makes this game good >____>)
Those are other things that I found out from the internet and I started doing. But those are pretty much the only side quests and they are done more or less for their own sake. I hardly ever had health problems, especially considering it regens, and the stamina boosts only made the fights easier. And you can't use any of those upgrades in the time attack mode, so the benefits of it all are nominal.

The most enjoyable, though not official, sidequest I found was cooing at the occasionally gorgeous lighting effects and the size discrepancy between me and most of the colossi.

Part of the reason a lot of people like SotC is for its minimal story. No, it's not going to win any awards for its amazing plot twists. But, it's different from any other game out there, and depending on the kind of person you are, it may be worth enjoying simply because there's nothing else like it.
Did you finish the game?

The twist at the end was fucking brilliant.

FUCK, use the spoiler box next time! Can't believe you just did that.
I'm pretty sure it's just him assuming. He doesn't know for sure. I don't even think the game is out in Japan yet. It might be, I don't know about international release dates but I don't think so.
Obvious sarcasm was Obvious dude...

OT: I loved the game. The controls were a tad bit annoying but not game breaking. Colossi 9, The Sand Dragon was amazing.
The "twist" was obvious as all fuck. YOU MEAN THE BIG SHADOWY MYSTERIOUS GUY WHO ASKED ME TO SLAY SOME INNOCENT CREATURES WAS EVIL ALL ALONG? COLOUR ME SURPRISED!
Hey that's racist!!!
I'm an evil shadowy creature so it's alright.
No it's not. Just because you are evil doesn't mean all shadowy creatures are. You just set shadowy creature's rights back a hundred years.

What? I think the guy should be allowed to talk about this game he didn't enjoy. There's this stupid goddamn trend on this website to just say "OMG well that's just your opinion" well NO SHIT what else would it be?

And I still don't know what you're saying. What are you saying?
The point is that people assume that others care when they don't like a game. The vast majority of the time (not saying it's true for you, OP) the only reason people post "OH MY GOD THIS GAME SUCKS EVEN THOUGH EVERYONE LOVES IT" is so others will think that they're cool because they didn't like a popular game. It's not their opinion, it's their way of trying to show everyone how much of a rebel they are (again, not saying it's true for you OP).

Basically people are tired of seeing a "I hate HL2" or a "I hate MW2 game every other day.

Again, not saying this is true for you, OP, you tried to give reasons for your opinion rather than just saying "It's bland and generic"

It may come as a surprise if you're expecting the conventional quest story-line.
Everyone I know who played it would have been more surprised if do...domorumumumumumu whatever the fuck his name was, had turned out to be good. Even if you're expecting the conventional quest story, you should know that darkness and shadows are bad and dangerous, especially that whole tentacle rape thing that happens when you kill the colossi.
Were you expecting to
become a colossi?
Did you expect that? Did you expect to feel remorse for killing the bosses when you started? They didn't hide the mal-effects of killing the colossi. Not one bit. what they did hide was who Wander was and his intentions.
He was a thief after all
I dunno. I guess I pulled more from the experience than you did. I just liked the game through and through and was always one to over-analyze everything.
You didn't become a colossus, dormofuck posessed you or something. Either way the big black thing was him, using Wander as a medium or some shit. But the way I see it is that over-analyzing anything is worse then not analyzing it at all. But all I was expecting was "Mysterious shadowy fuck will betray me somehow. Probably has to do with the tentacle rape." And boy howdy was I right.
So you don't define that large, black, shadowy mass you control at the end a colossi? Sure its not like the rest and yes its not-Dormommu possessing Wander, but its still a colossal creature of destruction. Also, not-Dormammu never betrays you. He said it would take a sacrifice (or something). He was very up front about his evil ways.

Oh great, a self-proclaimed writing critiquing a minimalist game for "bad writing", while he has earlier admitted to having missed out on all the subtleties and important details of said writing.

As for me, Colossus was a triumph. It had a great, tragic story that reminded me of Greek myth in the way it was told and had a fantastic approach in almost every aspect of the design. Didn't need tricks, or fancy motion control or 3D, just an epic scale and a brilliantly handled protagonist that worked perfectly as a mirror for the player.
I'll have you know I didn't miss the subtleties. I noticed that he changed appearance slowly over the course of the game, hinting at him slowly gathering more and more dark essence with each fight. I noticed that he got thrown around and wasn't great with a sword, which I dug because I felt like I was playing as some kid who was in over his head.

The problem is that those subtleties don't help me give a toss about Wander, which I have absolutely no reason to.

Greek tragedies included firey, emotional protagonists that were entertaining to watch flap about in efforts that we suspect are in vain. To the extent that this game was a tragedy (a tragic story, that is, not a tragedy like a disgrace to games, which it's not) it's like playing out a tragedy with action figures. And Wander is not a mirror of the player because I am not an action figure.

I'm thinking about creating an "I hated Portal" thread.

I mean, I didn't, but it'd probably touch on some of the same points, and rile up the same people.

Thoughts?

Not by the game's definition of a colossus, no I don't. The game's creator doesn't even consider it a colossus. It's just a big shadow beast, not a colossus. It's dormama at full strength I suppose.
Ah, well. Pot-a-to, to-mah-to, it hardly matters.

Well, art is always open to criticism and is entirely subjective, so I reckon your opinion is entirely valid, tho persoanlly I loved the game. The atmosphere, the design, the fights, it was all very involving and moving for me. :)

I was thinking, if you're not gonna keep it I could have it because I've been looking everywhere for a copy. what country do you live in?

This makes me furious. The point of the game is to leave you wondering. To make you fill in
the gaps yourself. It is a hard premise to understand with great games nowadays delivering any
info that they might have missed or forgotten. View Shadow Of The Colosuss not so much as a game, more as a interactive piece of art that shows a world of mystery. There is no lack of story, merely a lack of respect. Not to sound snippy, but who do we think we are when we demand explanations from things that obviously have so few?

Sorry for blowing any minds.

That would be trolling. Posting with the intention to annoy or start a flame war. This post was not, he was just expressing his opinion on an oft-loved game.
I'm aware that this would constitute trolling.

I was attempting to make an accusation in a humorous fashion.

As for the nature of the OP, I don't share your perception of the OP's intentions. Maybe I should be a less suspicious person.
