If you've ever read or seen "The Road", then you will know what it's like to play shadow of the colossus. It's really all about a sublime experience more than an "action-packed adventure". The OP is correct in that there is no tangible benefit to exploring the world of SotC; but, I (and most others as the game's popularity suggests) derive pleasure from exploring it just for the sake of exploring.

I never finished the game because I felt sorry for the Colossi.

They were just minding their business mooching about and being colossal and I felt bad killing them.

Yeah I thought it was overrated but I didn't even like Ico. Just saying it's art is making an excuse for it not being fun.

Rubbish. Alessandro Manzoni or Fyodor Dostoevsky are far less "fun" reads than, say, Nick Hornby, but nobody's going to argue who's on a higher plane artistically. A movie like The Hangover is far more entertaining than a movie by Ingmar Bergman, but the latter is the superior artistic achievement. And by the exact same token, Killer7's controls and story-telling are far less intuitive than, say, MW2's.
HAHA watching shit you don`t like is just pretentious. If you wanna watch movies that don`t entertain you that`s your call. I play games for fun.

You have an opinion.

That's nice.
Hey.

Shut up.

This is one step below "reported" when it comes to useless posts. Yes, he's expressed his opinion, good for him, it's certainly worth more than your post. He's allowed to, if you're not going to contribute something, keep quiet.

And being a vigilante mod is contributing?

Anyway, Shadow of Collosus (sp) was a beautiful game and very well made I thought.

It's great that you played it--I myself have loved SotC. About 7+ years ago a demo for SotC was released and I tried it out. It was essentially just the first colossus, I don't know if there were any more, because I could never figure out how to get past him. OT: Anyway, I loved it and if you didn't then that's great--One man's opinion. No one else may care about yours as much as they care about mine.

Seems to be a bit of a troll to me, all he did really was take all the points the made the game good and then use it in a negative way, maybe im wrong, but to me SOTC is one of thsoe games that will be looked upon by the billion diffrent space marine games they push out every year and they will cry out and say "why, why cant we be looked upon like Shadow?"

No offense OP but there is a reason why when the whole video games are art debate comes up SOTC is mentioned. Every.Single.Time. Hell even in Eberts final consent that his opinion is invalid as he is from a difrent medium he called Shadow the closest thing to art so far.

Of course opinions are pretty much useless unless you happen to be the one holding the pistol and your coup of survivors have resorted to cannibalism, so let me end it with this.

Shadow is a game that made me look at games diffrent as a whole, much like its predecessor, and if you did not enjoy it then i feel bad that you did not receive the same experince i did, but i do hope you find another game that gives you the same experince.

I very recently bought Shadow of the Colossus because I had never heard a negative word against it (which, come to think of it, should have sent up a red flag right there), and all those glowing reviews make it all the sadder that I'm overall not pleased with it.

I would say that I won't spoil any of the story or anything, but there is precious little that I could spoil if I wanted to. The story in SotC is barely there, and this may be because I've been working the narrative sections of my brain extra hard recently, but I think the game suffered greatly for it. Add to that there is virtually no benefit from exploring the overworld and you're left with gameplay that is pretty much exclusively fighting these colossi. Once you figure out the method to beat each one (which at times can feel more annoying than challenging) there is pretty much no variation when you face them again which, as I mentioned, is nearly all you can do. Oh, and the platforming and, God especially the horse, handle like crap. And what the hell is with calling numbers 11 and 14 colossi? That's ridiculous. That's like saying I'm successful with the ladies.

So the only things this game has going for it is a unique premise and good aesthetics (which doesn't find its way into everything)

So this game has let me down, and since my game budget is so slim, makes me upset.
a very good opinion of the game many player tend to hold the game too dearly myself the game play was fun story was very swing and a miss i would not call that game art myself because the only thing which suggest art would be the art style but the game holds no other artistic themes

i think many player try protect it because its one of their earliest arty games much like how many player protect portal much like ZP

It's meant to be art. Art is subjective, and therefore it is likely for the game to be hit or miss for most people.
Doesn't necessarily mean the art is good though. I mean, most contemporary art galleries contain the most pretentious bullshit this earth has to offer. The very least these artists could do is put some effort into their works; we really don't need another Pollock knockoff.

That said, I've never played Shadow of the Colossus.

An observation:The Escapist in general has become significantly apathetic in the past year.

EDIT: My point being, don't bother trying to reason with the rest of the community. They're far beyond it.

Or maybe I've just been here far too long and getting cranky. Frightening thought considering I'm only 17.

I had the same issues when I played. I played once through to the end, and never picked it up again.

It was "pretty" in the same way every other game is, but it had no real meat to it-- no story, no characterization, no development. It was a successful experiment in that it forced the player to improve rather than watch stats on a character get better. But it was boring and fluffy, and a waste of time when all it was, was a less rounded out "Zelda".

Never understood the glowing reviews it got.
