Should it be illegal to give kids stupid/horrendous names?

I'd like to preface this topic by saying I'm not completely serious about it being illegal, per say. Just that there certainly should be rules in place to stop it from happening.

I was watching The Early show this morning, and they had a story about a woman who had twins via two different surrogate mothers. Now, this in itself is a bit odd, but whatever. If you really want kids that badly, fine. However, what irks me to no end is that she named the boy Violet.

Violet

Do some people just want kids to torture them? There has to be some sort of court order that can get this kid a name that won't turn him into a serial murderer or worse...

Other names that should be banned:
Pilot Inspector
Moon Unit
Any symbol that is spelled out (ie. Semi Colon, Apostrophe).

My feelings about this can be roughly narrated via

So anyway, does this bother you as well? Do you have a funny name that you wish you weren't burdened with or know someone with a funny name? Should hospitals provide a Nurse of Common Sense to all maternity patients?

I don't remember who it was, but some douchebag called their kid 'Audio Science'...

So yes, these people should be stopped... then shot... with axes... that are on fire... also, the axes explode on impact... into smaller axes... which also explode...

Actually yes it does kinda.

Sure iv thought about giving my kids cool or "Unique" names, but then i thought about how kids would react to a kid with a name like Lyndis or Chrysanthemum...

Yeaaaaaaaaa.

Eh, nothing wrong with naming a boy Violet. It is quite a nice name. Sure, normally a girl's name, but does that matter?
If he really hates it that much when he is older, he can always change it.
Anyway, yeah, there should be some rules in place, I suppose.
At least there are some rules, such as numbers cannot be used in the name, which I discovered when some cuckoo couple tried to name their kid 4 Real. Yep. They really hated it that much.

Here's a thread I made some time ago about kid's names that have some interesting suggestions
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.253741-Baby-Names-General-Children-Thread

I think names like 'Moonunit' and 'Audio Science' are...just...no. Feel kinda sorry for the kids really. But I myself am a big fan of 'unusual' names, so to say.

The sketchy thing here is, where should the line be drawn? Who should police such things?

The answer is probably...nowhere and noone; opinions on names vary from person to person.

Baaaaah, interesting topic. Gotta feel sorry for Pilot Inspector.

Gotta say though, personally, I think Violet is an alright name for a guy. But then, everyone has a different opinion^_^.

But, but without children with weird names where would society get its serial killers?

No.

I find them funny, and wouldn't want them banned for that reason alone.

Apparently if you name your kid an unusual name, they're more likely to commit crime. Come on, who do you think killed that women, friendly Dave or Xeontro?

Names that could be considered offensive (like ones containing swear-words), or completely ridiculous (like ones containing numbers) shouldn't be allowed. However I think people should be allowed to call their kids what they want within reason, which in my opinion includes names for the opposite gender, after objects or places and made-up names.

Exactly. Without ridiculous names, our days would be filled with just a little less pointing and laughing.

And who wants that? :D

No but it should be made easier to change one's name. So if they don't like the name they were born with they can just change it.

I am sure there is something wrong with naming a boy, violet. He's a boy. I wouldn't name a kid Areola just because it sounds nice.

True the kid can change his name if he hates it once he is older but is the future hassle really necessary? Isn't prevention better than cure? What about the time in between having to live with his name and the age where he can legally change his own name? The bullies will be all over the little gremlin, named Violet.

The main problem here is that a child with an outlandish sort of name becomes a target for bullying, lets face it, kids are cruel and dont need much to go on when it comes to picking on other kids. For instance when the Beckhams called one of their sons Romeo, the entire UK snickered at the potential shit that kid would get on the basis of that name.

Cant make it illegal though, as someome above mentioned, who decides on the rules and enforeces them?

But if you are given what is usually a girl's name you will be bullied non-stop. Changing your name later will not make that never happen. Hell, people get bullied for having names that can belong to either sex.

I remember when this topic was discussed before (not necessarily here, but the internet in general) and the names 'Midnight Chardonnay' and 'Number Nine Bus Shelter' came up. Both were banned by some government, if I recall correctly.

Likewise, the Swedish government prevented a couple from naming their kid 'Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116' (that's pronounced 'Albin') simply because they didn't like the naming laws. However, someone else in Sweden named their daughter 'Metallica'.

There SHOULD be a system in place to stop this kind of crap, not only because it affects the child psychologically but also because it's just not fair on census takers.

I was just about to mention that 4 Real name.

People just don't have respect for their children. Would you accept a job application with the name Emancipation? Or Oatmeal? Or Xerox? Or Johnny McCool (I know a McCool, and I told them to be careful with first names).

Should it be illegal? No. Is it selfish? You bet.
