I am sure there is something wrong with naming a boy, violet. He's a boy. I wouldn't name a kid Areola just because it sounds nice.

True the kid can change his name if he hates it once he is older but is the future hassle really necessary? Isn't prevention better than cure? What about the time in between having to live with his name and the age where he can legally change his own name? The bullies will be all over the little gremlin, named Violet.
There are worse things in life to grow up with than a bad name. I have personal experience with that.
I'd have happily have grown up with just a name that people think isn't instead of other crap. But it doesn't matter what people think, because people are idiots, which is shown by their actions, such as bullying.

But if you are given what is usually a girl's name you will be bullied non-stop. Changing your name later will not make that never happen. Hell, people get bullied for having names that can belong to either sex.
As I just said above, there are much worse things, and bullying will happen no matter what, regardless of name.
Hell, my past can never be undone, no matter how much I want it to, and I only got a bit of bullying for my name. The rest was due to other causes, mainly people being assholes.

Violet is a perfectly fine name, it is just assholes being assholes that ruins things for everyone else.

No, they shouldn't be forced, via law, to not be able to name their children whatever they want to.

However, I feel that parents who give their children outlandish names should be forced to sign a waiver that reads something along the lines of "I know my child will 99% be made fun of due to their unique name, and with that knowledge I hereby forfeit my right to sue the parents of, ***** at the school of, or otherwise complain about the bullying from said other children."

I might just be a little bit bitter about this new "school bullying is the devil" phase; hell I got bullied every day in school until the day I graduated and apparently the fact that I didn't murder anyone or kill myself is a Christmas level miracle according to the standards society has in place now.

Oh, and my dad works as a chiropractor in Baltimore, MD. Everytime I visit my parents he's got new, ridiculous names. People think that letters are pronounced like their letter names. Y =/= Why R =/= Are

And apparenly the majority get upset when you pronounce their name wrong. It's like, "I'm sorry... that your parents are so stupid."

I find it hilarious! So no. How else would we be able to identify where the decline in society is coming from. Hell I know a guy named Tim Burr... Guess what kinda business he runs. LANDSCAPING!

i heard on the radio about a kid named hand cuff
Sounds like their parents were into some kinky stuff.

OT: I guess it could be but hard to enforce. Look at Gweneth Paltro's kids names: Apple Martin and Moses Martin

Also, my name can be a girls name. I got teased a ton in school. Then I started saying yeah I knew a guy named _________(<insert their name here) and he was a _______(something bad here) so if I'm a girl, does that make you a _________ ?

The name won't cause their kids to be bullied, the fact that children are evil little sprites who will bully anyone for no other reason than they can and sometimes name is a convient thing to do that about is where the real bullying problem comes from (or was that jut my school experience?).

That said the crime of naming someone with a particularly stupid or cruel name should be punishable by kneecapping.

Actually, in my country, there are plenty of kids' names that are illegal.
It was very normal to call your child "Bjørn" (It's my dad's name) some 30 years back, for example; but now, the government has decided that you can't name children after animals (Bjørn is the Norwegian word for bear, you see)

Personally, I think that's a bit silly. Naming children after animals was pretty common, so there should be no reason to ban that. I still think it's good that we have laws that keep parents from naming their kids "Peaceoshit" though.

Edit: Ok, here's what the law actually says.

You may not choose a name that will be a significant inconvenience to the bearer.

Actually, Jason Lee named his son Pilot Inspektor. Spelled wrong on purpose.
And Frank Zappa's other kid was named Dweezil Zappa. Not as bad as Moon Unit but still pretty bad.

Eh, I like some of the odd names. Not uber-weird names like Pilot Inspektor but the ones you don't hear often. They're better than having everyone named John or Katey or other boring names like that.

[sub]no offense meant to anyone named John or Katey or other boring names like that.[/sub]

I think there should be no laws on naming, but a change should be allowed at 18. That way a stupid kid doesn't decide to change his name from Kevin to Spongebob.

Considering it's all subjective, we can't really stop 'em.
Besides, you can get your name changed once you get over. No biggie. Apart from the mental scarring you'll receive in life.

True again, but just because there are things worse than (x), doesn't mean that (x) can be dismissed because it isn't as catastrophic as (y). It could even be that (x) passively catalyzes (y) or something to that effect.

I say parents should give a little more thought into naming their offspring before settling with names like 'Apple' or 'Moses'. As you say, people are assholes..let's not give them anymore ammunition that they can find

Yes, and as far as I know, it is. In Alberta, anyways. Doctors will refuse to name your kids something sometimes. I'm not sure how it works. There was a news article on it once and they had lists of names that were rejected.

The list included Morpheus, Apple, and Spatula.

Yes, Spatula. How stupid do you have to be to try to name your kid Spatula?

See the way you do this, even if it isn't a bad name but just a very strange one, is that you make that the middle name. Then the first name is something normal and if the kid wants to ignore the unusual name then they can.

Case in point, my first name is fairly common in the US but my parents gave me a Japanese middle name because I was born there (military brat). Everyone pronounces it wrong but that's okay because very few ever see it, they just see the normal first name. So it all works out.

No

As ridiculous as some people can be in naming their kids the government has no business telling you what they can be named.
