Should people stop accusing every game recently made to be a rip off of God of War or Halo?

Why is it that every new game that comes out has to be related to some other similar game? If the characters have swords, its a God of War rip off. If anybody has a gun, it immediately copies off of Halo. Not every game that is produced can be revolutionary, and has anybody stopped to think that maybe, just maybe they are similar because the designers wanted to use a feature that clearly works? Do you decide to not buy games just because they're similar to another one? We'd only have about 5 games if no other developer was allowed to borrow things from other games...

I have yet to see this trend that you speak of.
If it is happening yes, they should.

well that's what happens when you put games into particular categories , like every game that has guns ,cars ,stealing and killing is a gta game

yes they should but it is usually done that way to describe the type of game ,not as a rip off

ya, I actually got mad at Yatzhee when he said that all those games where god of war ripoffs. yes, big manly men using swords to kill the armies of evil isn't really new, but that doesn't make it a god of war ripoff. I haven't seen the HALO one thought, just people auto agreeing with Yatzhee.

As far as I'm aware the main games that are being ripped off at the moment are god of war and gears of war and that is with dante inferno (shameless GOW clone) and Dark Void which I think is built on the Unreal Engine anyway, hence being rather similar to gears of war.

I don't agree with all of Yahtzees comparisions to god of war though, Bayonetta is ripping off Devil May Cry and Darksiders is ripping off legend of zelda (ha ha) two entirely different games

The issue isnt that people are borrowing ideas it that they aren't coming up with new ones, for example Call of duty borrows the regenerating health idea originally introduced by halo, but modern warfare has added enough features of its own to be its own game, The games critisized for being rip offs of games seem to be practically total conversions of the games in question, Dark void may be viewed more favoruably because although it does use the unreal engine it does stray from gears of war by adding a jetpack.

God of War is a hack 'n' slash game. Not the only of its kind. To call games like Dante's Inferno or Darksiders ripoffs, would be calling any FPS a ripoff from [insert popular FPS].

The only game I've accused of being a rip-of lately, and that is Dante's Inferno.

And that is a rip-off if I've ever seen one.

Other than that, I haven't really seen many rip-offs.

Well, Modern Warfare 2 was a rip-off on Modern Warfare!!!

About Dantes Inferno, i've played both the demo and GOW, they're both great games. If i had both a PS3 and a 360 id probably buy both. The fact that they're similar doesnt make them any less playable in my opinion. The only thing that puts a strain on Inferno is the fact that peoples standards for those types of games are higher, so the developers probably have to try harder to make a game that would be considered by the mass to be good.

Not at all. Taking an idea or two is fine, no one minds if a shooter has regenerating health or a cover system, but if the game then goes out of it's way to duplicate the feel of Gears of War than there's clearly a problem.

Same with God of War, Darksiders really has tried to desperately cash in on the success of God of War 2. A lot of people haven't played God of War and are heralding Darksiders as a revelation in gaming, unaware that they're playing a really cheap and poorly made copy of a classic. It's the price God of War has to pay for being a console exclusive.

Something like Bayonetta on the other hand, yes it has similar combat mechanics, it's a hack-n-slash however the fact can be clearly seen that the developers have bought their own flavour to the game that shines through. It's even got a (as far as I'm aware) completely original story-line, even if it is a very silly one. :)

Darksiders he has a point with, but it's closer to 3D Zelda, Bayonetta is not a God of War rip-off, if it rips off anything, it's DMC4, and I really wouldn't say that, because developers can't really "rip-off" their own game.

i have yet to hear someone relate Half-Life to Halo. and its not that they have swords and therefore are ripping off of God of War, its the gameplay man. The way you play, the way the game itself works, etc.
