you need high school.

In addition, bullies, cliques and bad teachers have been around since the beginning of schooling. Little House on the Prairie showed bullies, and although I'm unsure of how accurate it is, I would imagine the Egyptians had bratty kids that picked on other kids.

What's the alternative? If you're going to take out high school, those 15-18 year olds need to be doing something. Working? sure, in a great economy there is lots of room for a less educated workforce, but what about in a bad economy, where the only jobs require a lot of education?

What about college? If you get rid of high school, how do you get into college? and if you can't get into college because there's no training for it, where do the next doctors, scientists and teachers come from?

Yes, because the world is totally too smart already.

Absolutely not. As much of it seems to be bullshit, a lot of it is really good for you. If you can get a good work ethic going, pay attention to your English classes and figure out what of the basic subjects you enjoy; you can make it in real life easier knowing your strengths and weaknesses.

I, for example, discovered I really like filming and that I'm quite good at it. I am terrible at math however and have therefore never wasted my time (and possibly money) trying to start a career with a lot of math in it.

Right you are!

Future Redlin: Back on the farm you miscreants or I'll give you a taste of me whip! Or do you want to be sent to the front because lord knows our uneducated governments know nothing about diplomacy. Your choice, the scythe or the sword?

Sounds like the writer had a tough time in school.

Neat opinion, but most teenagers aren't ready for full time work when they start high school either. Botstein isn't so much proof that high school is obsolete, as he is an exception.

Good god.. first some kid posts about wanting homework scrapped, now you want to go one further by scrapping high school entirely?

I'm afraid the lack of inteligence shown by even considering such childish points of view PROVES a desperate need for both.

Quick question, what would you replace high school with, once you finish grade 9 (sometimes 8 depending on where you live). I wouldn't suggest we are ready for university or college at that age. And what about social interaction. You don't get the same learning experiance if you were to be homeschooled.

And that's not including dating and lessons learned there (mind I didn't learn that till grade 12 :p)

No...?

Stick up for yourself, be yourself, and just do your damn work. Shit, its not that hard. I went to a good high school, so I don't know exactly how bad it can get, but I definitely understand ostracization for being different. But fuck it, I found my group of friends too, and I stuck with them and fuck everyone else.

Another thing, if you think the "real world" doesn't have bullies, cliques, and bad instructions, then you are going to be sorely disappointed.

The better response to the fact that public high schools are failing should not be to get rid of them, but to fix them.

And do what? High school is you real first chance at college. Its pre college. you pick your classes, you get used to being an adult, you start to ease out of that safe ness and into a slightly more real world environment.

besides, what's the alternative? Send kids to college four years earlier? Parents couldnt afford it, even if college rates were cut down. Plus, if you're going ot be something like a doctor, thats twelve years of college. I mean, sure, you could teach tougher courses, but then you have to revamp the entire education system, making each grade much harder to compensate.

Hell fucking no. People are going to be people and form their tribes you can't stop that, but cancelling High School is just gonna worsen the clique vibe.

Yes, education is bad. I regret that I went to school and lost my chance to become a complete idiot.

If anything, this is the real learning that goes on throughout all of schooling. Or at least, the learning that's applicable to everyone. Not everyone is going to need to know how to do algebra, or the capital of Rhodesia[footnote]It was Salisbury.[/footnote]. However, everyone needs to learn how to interact with people, and school systems are pretty much a miniature society unto themselves.

High school is difficult, stupid, and vicious. Much like life. To completely geek out for a moment, and speaking as someone who was home schooled for grades 7 through 12, I think high school serves as the tutorial for the grueling and overly-complex game that is life.
I have no way of proving this, but I suspect that my lack of a proper high school experience is largely to blame for the fact that I feel more comfortable connecting to my fellow human beings with a series of tubes between us, and the social cowardice that probably ended my first fluke of a marriage.
Just my couple of pennies.

What exactly is the alternative to high schools? Quit frankly, some people do need guidance. The "sink or swim" philosophy that seems to inspire this idea will guarantee that people who need help end up getting it. And if you don't think that cliques and bullies don't exist in the "real world", then you are sorely mistaken. The fact is that although the current educational system in the U.S. has its share of issues, completely abolishing high school, as a transition state between the broad and highly assisted learning of elementary and middle school and the highly focused, self-driven learning found at colleges would leave many students helpless, and would likely increase the dropout rate significantly.
