And do what? High school is you real first chance at college. Its pre college. you pick your classes, you get used to being an adult, you start to ease out of that safe ness and into a slightly more real world environment.
First chance at college, yes. It gives you the education you need to take the first steps in higher education. But honestly, you learn little about being an adult from high school. I was highly involved in the whole process, and I didn't learn a thing about the real world until I started doing internships in the summer time and actually got into college. There are many reasons that we need high school, but that really isn't one of them. High school isn't a place where you learn maturity, in fact I'd argue the opposite.

Now that I disagree with completely. High school is in need of efficiency in education, not an extension in it. Schools in many other countries are more than capable of teaching their students everything that the average American or British high school student learns in less time, and even go beyond by age 18. We don't need to babysit the kids longer, we just need to fix the curriculum of schools from elementary up so students actually know what they need to know by the time they're ready to either join the workforce or go for higher education.

No. All the hardships in High School build character, and what would we replace it with? Would teenagers spent their years from 13-18 at crappy part time jobs?

Here is something your going to learn once you graduate, move out, and get a job.

You know those cliques, bullies, and asshole teachers? They don't go away.

Cliques exist in the work place. Where i work the Day time crew and the Night time crew don't get along that well. We just don't mesh well. We all play friendly but we both do things so differently we end up pissing each other off in a thousand different ways. Everyday we all for some reason utter the words 'Fucking night timers' during our shift, as i have heard they do to us.

Bullies? Ha ha, yeah they never go away. Only at work instead of doing just enough to piss you off to not get in trouble with teachers they do just enough work and kiss the assholes of the right bosses to make sure they don't get fired while doing as little as possibly but still pulling in a paycheck.

Asshole teachers? Asshole bosses!

Highschool is important to learn how to deal with the stupid shits in the world. Unless you have a rich family with lots of connections or any other golden spoon up your ass your going to have the fun of paying your way through college on a fry cooks wage, like more then half of my fellow classmates. If you don't know how to properly handle the dipshits, work politics, and asshole bosses your going to be living with your parents a long damn time.

Then its probably different experiences. I know I learned all about being an adult. Learned about death, about loss, about due dates, about responsibilities, about looking good, about the importance of a resume. I learned all about being an adult and how to act like one, but then again, like i said, its probably experiences.

A cuple of days ago in my compositon class we read an article about how high schools and how their time has past because of all the clicks, bulling, teachers, etc.

This is similar to the article i read.

What do you think should we get rid of high schools?
The sheer number of grammar and spelling errors renders your point invalid.
Or you're trolling. For the sake of humanity I hope you're trolling.

If you got rid of high school, where would teenagers go to create future embarrassing memories?

true. but the op was saying to get rid of high school. i was just saying the oposite of extending it would be far better. making the high school thing more efficient is even better option.

hmmm, i had a horrible time in highschool, dropped out, and did my last two years in an adult ed center in 8 months (that includes calculus, chemistry and physics classes). I think highschool is important but seriously needs an overhaul.

I could've done with an extra year of highschool so I wouldn't have wasted thousands of dollars on one year of computer science before realising I wanted to do statistics.

This is all getting out of hand. Right now most of you are are just bashing the op over the head with this. I had a good high school experience in my view, but that dosen't justify it completely. I've seen alought of idiot teens yes; but I can't help but think that, dumb as some are, can do more than just cashiering. The articale isn't just about the high school it's the view of teens in general, and it's coming from a very smart and successful person. Give it a little more thought before writing it off completely, and if you say "you think of something better" that's what YOUR supposed to be thinking about!

Good god.. first some kid posts about wanting homework scrapped, now you want to go one further by scrapping high school entirely?

I'm afraid the lack of inteligence shown by even considering such childish points of view PROVES a desperate need for both.
Wow, I'm going to guess you didn't even take the time to read the OP or follow the link. He found an article that brought up a topic that intrigued him and he wanted to make an open discussion of it. I read that thread of doing away with homework and this is nothing like it. You may want to calm down there and think before you post.

OT: It would be nice to be able to read the entire article since the linked site only gives you a sample of it then demands money to read the rest. You wouldn't happen to have access to the full article would you?

Here's my two cents on the matter.(and I'm going to make it quick cause I should be studying :X ) I would say that high school is a necessity because of maturity levels but 3 years of college has shown me a grasp on maturity is something in short supply. I feel that high school as it is now is at worst pointless and at best requires some retuning. Instead of just feeding kids the basic general information they are getting now I think there needs to be a push for high schools to actually ready kids for college. As it is you end up having to relearn most if not all of the stuff you learned in high school when you get to college by trudging through the slew of general education classes. All that does is raise the cost of going to college and the amount of time kids are spending in college. Its inefficient, we're putting everyone through the same education twice and frankly its starting to muck up the system. To put it simply we need to be using high school as means for trimming the fat from bloated college curriculum so that when kids get to college they can actually study for the field they want to go into and not spend their first two years screwing around in the general eds.

As I was once told by one of my professors "College is not about learning how to do everything required for your future job. Trust me when I say we couldn't ever hope to do that. What that slip of paper we give you at graduation proves to prospective employers is that you have the ability and patience to learn." Frankly I think that needs to change; if you go to school for specific degree then dammit the bulk of your classes should be geared towards that area of study. I believe that high schools are where we can enact that change.
