I will hazard a guess, but all this talk of getting rid of homework and high school is just an exasperated response for reform. Education and its various aspects must have reasonable expectations of its students and teachers, be implemented fairly and consistently, must be valid in regard to the surrounding community (but also provide a window to other possibilities for the adventurers among us), and most importantly, it must be practical.

Just because a system has flaws, doesn't mean that it must be removed, especially since there is no real alternative.

people are going to call me a communist but i think you should be able to specialize your school by the time you get to a high school level. why should i be forced to learn calculus if im going to be an English or Law major? it makes no sense, and thats why specialization is the key. according to these findings, it would improve the students overall drive in what they are learning because they actually WANT to learn (shocker). and if certain people choose not to, their is always going to be jobs for the uneducated to do, have fun, just dont drag the rest of us down by muddying our schooling system and breaking curriculum with out of date and ridiculously easy standardized tests that make us the laughing stock of the first world. on the topic of bullying and clicks, i can honestly say that kids need to toughen up. sure teenage suicide is on the rise and Facebook and the internet make it increasingly easier to exploit and bully, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. if you can live through the supposed amount of mental humiliation that is going on, then we are fixing to have one of the most mentally hardened generations of the past century. of course this isnt the case, with every child being called "special", even when they arent, from a young age, they grow up with a false sense of entitlement. that leads to the assumption that anything negative said about them by another person is the most un-holy thing that could happen, after all they are special, right? certain people give their kids too much credit while others dont give theirs enough. school isnt cut out for everyone, every generation has outcasts and people who arent the best at the education system. does that mean we cater to them, no, we tell them that they arent cut out for this and get them doing a respectable job that requires little to no education. while i know few of these exist now, we cant allow people who dont want to be in school to be forced to stay in school and drag others down. do we need high school, yes we do, but definitely not in its current form here in america.

just as a side-note, people always pester me with questions about bullying and i just really had to vent my frustration with the current state of our over-coddling society today. and no im not a Nazi, Communist, Republican, or Democrat for that matter, i am independent.

*EDIT: thanks OP for bringing up the topic, and by the way this isnt meant to bash anyones opinion, its simply stating my views on the topic.

um.... Shouldnt he make up an idea since he wants it gone? And besides, just because highschools are broken, that doesnt mean you get rid of it. If your car is broke you dont just throw it away and buy a new one (well, unless you're insanely rich, or saved up). And of course high school kids hate high school. Who honestly likes to do time consuming work that doesnt pay them? Besides, its also the very smart and successful men who condemn video games, so you cant just take thier words as gospel.
Somehow that gives people the right to instead of engaging in thoughtful discussion about the topic simply read the title, skim the OP, and insult him? Look I'm sorry alot of you had seriously terrible high school years but maybe instead of just tossing insults and "suck it up punk that's life" comments at him you should stop for a moment and consider the idea. The idea of getting rid of high schools should at the very least prompt one to stop and think to themselves "what purpose do high schools serve?" Most of the comments in this thread seem to be built singularly on the end of the first sentence made by the OP. I doubt a single one of you actually paid attention to the part where he mentions that this stems from a topic discussed in one of his classes. No instead all you sorry excuses for forum trolls pounced on his typos as evidence he was wrong and an easy means to insult his intelligence. Wrong about what? He never endorsed getting rid of high schools. All he did was reference an article that asks the question in hope of sparking an intelligent discussion. Obviously discussion is beyond the comprehension of you people.

I mean good god, how short of an opening post do you people need to get the entire message? Most of you failed to even make it past the first sentence let alone actually read the beginning of it. Hell, the OP would probably been better off not wasting the time to even type an opening post and instead just have posted a blank post since that seems to be how it's being regarded.

Next time freaking THINK before you post. You'll be surprised and pleased with the results I assure you.

Stick up for yourself, be yourself, and just do your damn work. Shit, its not that hard. I went to a good high school, so I don't know exactly how bad it can get, but I definitely understand ostracization for being different. But fuck it, I found my group of friends too, and I stuck with them and fuck everyone else.
Well, we couldn't ALL fit in with the panda clique, now could we?

Damn cool kids

Luckily I found my place amongst the wolves...

Anyways, by the looks of your OP, you need some schoolin'. And this is a slippery slope, if we booted highschool (which is a bad idea) what comes next? College? A formal education altogether?

Highschool is a vital cornerstone of society.
Haha Riiight. =P I was just too damn cool for school.
Oh, I knew how it went...

Sitting in the back of the class, smoking bamboo sticks in the bathroom, leanin' on stumps, checking out passsing chicks.

Yea, you're cool...

Yes, education is bad. I regret that I went to school and lost my chance to become a complete idiot.

If schools continue to hire people who know nothing about their subjects as teacher and allow kids at school to act and look like prostitutes and pimps, you can just go ahead and remove them, it might be for the best.

But I do know of a lot of countries, who have proper education, like really oldschool, super strict, but at least the kids learn proper manners and get the knowledge they should be getting at school. Too bad they go out in the real world after, and see what other kids their age have become thanks to poor educational system. It's a sad view when you compare a kid who graduated from a proper school to a 'kid' from some random crappy school where most teachers don't even go to work (i've seen this too, sadly). I'm saying 'kid' for the second example, because the children who go to bad schools, they lose everything that makes them children, every hope in them, every naive, little, cute and dumb in a way thought. They start acting like 40 years old wasted whores and drunkards, except they know nothing about anything.

If you're a high school student and think your school is bad and isn't teaching you anything, talk to your parents. It might get worse, because you'll have to actually study then, but trust me, later on you won't regret it and you'll be proud of your decision.

well first of all, no. the age differences would make children feel alien in there own environment and our schools where i am are over stuffedas is, no need to overdo that which is overdone already.

A cuple of days ago in my compositon class we read an article about how high schools and how their time has past because of all the clicks, bulling, teachers, etc.

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-163471123.html

This is similar to the article i read. That original post gets an F--.

What do you think should we get rid of high schools?
you need high school.

In addition, bullies, cliques and bad teachers have been around since the beginning of schooling. Little House on the Prairie showed bullies, and although I'm unsure of how accurate it is, I would imagine the Egyptians had bratty kids that picked on other kids.

What's the alternative? If you're going to take out high school, those 15-18 year olds need to be doing something. Working? sure, in a great economy there is lots of room for a less educated workforce, but what about in a bad economy, where the only jobs require a lot of education?

What about college? If you get rid of high school, how do you get into college? and if you can't get into college because there's no training for it, where do the next doctors, scientists and teachers come from?
i think he intended to ask if we should integrate high school with middle school

If the world didn't have High School, a quarter of all anime/manga will be pointless. High school is necessary because it allows you to dip your toes into the ocean of adulthood. From having awkward relationships to overcoming peer pressure, High School will help you with more than just academics. It's a safe place to build a new identity for yourself and test your communication skills be it via text of mouth(More like tongue and voicebox, though).

without high school social skills would have to be leanrt in some other environment which may not be the greatest idea
plus there's not enough jobs to support the sudden flow of teenagers who'll need work instead of the time they were going to spend at high school

I would divide people by personality into at least 3 different personality types for junior high and senior high school. Without bullying, Albertan tax dollars could be used to their maximum potential rather than distractions like having people steal and damage one another individuals property and person. I think it would quite significantly reduce bullying to group people based on personality type.

I would argue that the social skills needed in high school are entirely different to those needed in the real world. I personally see no value at all for schools teaching social skills. Behaving in a brutish manner will not get an individual ahead in the business world.

well maybe you have a point
but in my opinion and in my own experience the socialising you do at high school is the most important you'll ever do
it's where you'll meet lifelong friends
you'll (most likely) have your first relationships there
and it's basically hwere i learnt, and how many people i expect, learn how to communicate with adults in a civilized way
maybe my experiences differ from others
but all this is only an opinion

cliques existing isn't really a great reason (even less so I mean)

once they graduate it's all for nil anyway (not saying they grow up, just separate to college where...oh boy frats)
