Shouldn't Anonymous hit back at LulzSec?

Anonymous are a hacktivist group as we all know. Two of the items on their agenda are :

- Freedom of Speech.
So when a govt starts beating up/jailing protesters/dissidents/whistleblowers, Anonymous hacks sites connected to that government.

- Freedom of the Internet/ Internet Privacy
Attempts from governments or individual corporations to either monitor or censor Internet traffic were again met again by hacktivist ops by Anonymous.

So now I ask, doesn't LulzSec's attack touch both of these bases?

What if the Chinese govt brought down Escapist because of a particular thread that it didn't like, say one where Chinese govt abuses were discussed at length? Wouldn't Anonymous be all over the Chinese governmental sites like a bunch of angry wasps, and rightfully so?

So why, in this instance, is LulzSec exempted?

LulzSec carried out an act of cyber-bullying. They didn't like what the community said, so they started throwing punches to silence it, exactly like a schoolyard bully.

So where are the Anon legions?

For something like The Escapes I don't think Anon would bother too much; I don't think were worth the attention... The best thing that can be done to deal with Lulzsec is to ignore them - they work off the reaction they get.

Both Anon and LulzSec hides behind proxies there are no way any of them can direct an attack against the other part since there are no place to strike.

Is it true that the Escapist was hacked? That's scary shit :S

I do kind of wish that Anonymous would do something about LulzSec, they're the closest thing that the Internet has to terrorists. But if there's nothing they can do, then there's nothing they can do, and I guess that's it.

yesterday around 10PM GMT I tried accesing the escapist but loading took extremelty long and I got allot of time out errors (I assume it was a DDOS) it,s also tweeted by lulzsec

And that concludes our DDoS party: Escapist Magazine, Eve Online, Minecraft, League of Legends + 8 phone requests.
I really hope they get caught.

It wasn't hacked it was DDOS'd. You know how the site slows down due to the traffic of people watching Zero Punctuation? Well what they did was that times ten, and they did it intentionally.

It isn't hacking. Hacking involves breaching security to access information or to control a computer.

What they did to those companies to obtain passwords was hacking.

Right, not as bad then I guess. I tried to come on last night and it was being ridiculously so, so I was pretty suspicious then. Still, I can't believe they can just get in and out of websites like that at will. It's really worrying.

I think it was just a DDoS, the Escapist was down yeterday.

I don't think Anonymous would do anything, because they are pretty much for 'teh lulz'. So why would they.

I'll just leave this here.

LulzSec is a group that cracks sites for the lulz.

Anonymous is a group that hacks sites for the lulz... that grew the hell up when it realized there were things that offended its members and found it more lulzy to be hacktivists rather than simple crackers.

Cracking is not inherently counter to hacktivism. So why would Anonymous care?

I know several friends who have accounts here that have links to Facebook and Xfire and the likes on their profiles, they had to change their passwords. Coincidence?

What would Anonymous hack. It's not like there's an official Lulzsec website.

This is the part where someone posts a link to an official Lulzsec website and makes me look like an idiot.

I would say you are not properly informed on this issue.

Anonymous actually doesn't randomly bring down sites or steal data just for kicks. Quite the opposite, really, they act in accordance to their agenda. Hence why they bother to launch Operation Iran, or Operation Egypt or Operation Tunisia in response to those popular upheavals. Or actions to bring to light or attention to cases of corruption (the Bank of America releases made by Anon this year ) or governmental double-dealings ( the operations revolving Wikileaks and Julian Assange ), or those relating to censorship (Operations Titstorm and Didgeridie ).

The actions of Anonymous are very much in reaction to real-world policies and politics. Hacktivism.

Thus, I would say that it is not the same with what LulzSec does.

I mean, if you are somebody out to right the wrongs of the world, of the governments of the world, would you, at the same time, harass random people on the street that you are, theoretically, saving from the said "evils" of government or corporations?

This being said, there's a big difference between what Anon has done and LulzSec has done.

Anon has done the equivalent of bombing an army barracks. Criminal, yes, but with a political motivation and against a legitimate target if you were to take action against that political entity.

LulzSec is like gunning people randomly on the street, no rhyme or reason.

Anon have a method to their disruptiveness, like resistance fighters.

LulzSec is Al-Qaeda. Utter contempt for who gets hit, intentionally or not.

So, basically, they grew the fuck up and decided there were things that offended their members? And decided it was better to be hacktivists rather than simple crackers?
