It happens every month or so, but I'm feeling the need to go through a whole series of anime, or at least watch a few movies in japanese animation. Shojo, action, mecha, samurai, just give me what you have, but I've been feeling for something GOOD recently, as I've been smacked around quite a bit by mediocrity.
If you haven't caught them let me recommend you Berserk and Spice and Wolf. Two very different shows with one thing in common: Even though they both have fantastic elements, they both keep one eye on reality. They are not the kind of shows where anybody gets punched into the sky and turns into a star or where horny people get nosebleeds.
Berserk: A violent dark fantasy about a mercenary named Guts and his time in the mercenary band: Band Of The Hawk. Things are mostly set in a low-fantasy European setting, however there's an element of magic that seems to be ever bleeding into the story. We see Guts become an ever greater warrior while also growing as a person, seeking to find himself. More adult and far better written and intelligent than a series about a man with a giant sword has a right to be.
Spice and Wolf: A merchant named Lawrence visits a small pagan town and winds up with the local harvest goddess hiding in his cart. She can change forms between giant wolf and young woman and strikes a deal with Lawrence to return to her home in the north. Together Lawrence and the goddess Holo, wait for it... solve economic mysteries. The show doesn't really focus on magic or battles or anything like that, there's a lot of intrigue, and a lot to do with business, politics and religion. Also there's a romantic angle involved as well. It's far better written and intelligent than a series about a man with a giant wolf has a right to be.
Berserk is available on DVD, you can probably find it someplace online. A new series is coming in 2012, but there's no better time to jump in than now. Besides, I don't know how the pacing will be on the new one.
Spice and Wolf is available streaming Via Netflix, and is also available on anime news network's site. (I recommend netflix so much for that HD picture though).
