Welcome to the NHK

Story about a guy who minimises leaving his house (To get food at night) - driven slightly insane by the isolation, and is exploited throughout the story by all those cons they use on the emotionally vulnerable.

If you want a seriously good Anime show without Mahoujo-type themes in it, go for this. 24 eps.

It happens every month or so, but I'm feeling the need to go through a whole series of anime, or at least watch a few movies in japanese animation. Shojo, action, mecha, samurai, just give me what you have, but I've been feeling for something GOOD recently, as I've been smacked around quite a bit by mediocrity.
Berserk: A violent dark fantasy about a mercenary named Guts and his time in the mercenary band: Band Of The Hawk. Things are mostly set in a low-fantasy European setting, however there's an element of magic that seems to be ever bleeding into the story. We see Guts become an ever greater warrior while also growing as a person, seeking to find himself. More adult and far better written and intelligent than a series about a man with a giant sword has a right to be.

Berserk is available on DVD, you can probably find it someplace online. A new series is coming in 2012, but there's no better time to jump in than now. Besides, I don't know how the pacing will be on the new one.
I second this recommendation. I will also support any votes for Ruroni Kenshin, Record of Lodos War, the Slayers, or Fushigi Yugi. Berserk does top out my list by far though.

Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni.

It's a comedy with a surprisingly involved plot. If you enjoy a few laughs with your webs of intrigue, there you go.
...Comedy?
This is a show where a girl's fingernails get ripped off and then goes on a psychotic killing spree on her former friends.
I'm pretty sure its not a comedy in any form.
But I will say that it's a great super-natural murder mystery with a VERY intricate plot.
Definitely worth a watch.
Edit: Just realized the guy was joking...nice one, you sure fooled me.

Dood, it is hilarious, right before everyone goes mad.

Okay! Listen hard and listen now! The Great Kamina has had enough of your mediocre anime series, so I'm here telling you to man up and watch a real anime; Unless your weak little beastman body not strong enough for the manly machine that is Gurran Lagann!

"All jokes aside, the anime series is Tengen Toppa Gurran Lagann. Fantastic series, just don't take it seriously."
Oh you should take it with all of the serious, that show is fantastically ridiculous. I'm tempted to go watch it again in fact. I have also heard good things about a show called Kenichi but I haven't looked into it yet.

Ugh here we go:

Toaru Majutsu No index - both seasons are really good.
Angel Beats
Mushishi
Serial Experiments Lain
Ergo Proxy
Planetes
Darker Than Black (second season is airing in Japan at the moment)
Durarara!!!
Paranoia Agent

Those would be my top lot I think.

Well here's a rambling of some animes that I enjoyed:

Cowboy Bebop (of course now that Comedy Central aired it I think everyones seen it, but still is awesome)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (think most people that have wanted to see it have by now)
Azumanga Daioh (hilarious!)
Ergo Proxy (gets a little philosophically Japanese-y at the end...I'm not sure what I mean by this but you'll know if you watch it)
Bubblegum Crisis (shut up I liked it, cyberpunkish)
Appleseed (just a movie so you don't have to devote whole seasons)
Ninja Scroll (18+ only tho, lots of nudity/violence)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Hmm, that's about all recently. I will be sure to add Vampire Hunter D to this list when it comes out. You can check out the movie Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust if you wish, or the original which is pretty old by now (1985 I think?).

Im not sure what you have already seen, but if you want some violence/innocence/other pretty damn good points found in many anime, try 'Elfen Lied'

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elfen_Lied

I found it pretty awesome. so if you watch it or have seen it, let me know what you thought. There is also Death Note and the various gundams.
you mean the show about a guy in a love triangle with his cousin who has severe mental issues and the girl with a split personality that murdered his intire family ya that was interesting thats for sure

Monster?
Funny you should mention that, because I continued digging around and came across that and started watching it.

It's really good. I don't like a lot of anime and but I really like this.
