Yea, well.. because it's amazing. People waited 5 years for it. It meets expectations in a glorious kind of way.
It doesn't look that amazing to me.
Honestly, it just looks like Oblivion, but with a better graphics engine.
It met my expectations, being an Oblivion that's actually fun to play, without a ton of mods.

Past that? I really don't think it lives up to the hype.

Dont let the hype get to you. The fact was no one knew much about skyrim till it was released and now that it is people can come to their own conclusions. What people did know is that the last two elder scrolls games were pretty good (as I understand it Daggerfall, the second? game, was still considered the best with hardcore elder scrolls fans).

The thing is when we only know about 10% of a game our brains tend to make everything else seem awesome. Plus people like to speculate about games and to be honest I think that can be fun.

It's still going to get a GOTY edition so it doesn't matter in the slightest.

And i'm loving the game.

Yeah, no game should ever need the qualifier "but it gets good after the first 20 hours."

I'd like longer experiences, but they don't immediately equal good.
Very true and personally I prefer my games to be longer although short games, such as Bastion, have been some of the best games I've ever played.

I liked Yahtzee's comments on Portal. While I'm not a Portal fan, I agree with the basic premise that a game can be short and be the "right length."

A game certainly shouldn't be padded out. If it's only a couple of hours, but an amazing couple of hours, it's a good thing. WELL, not if you're paying full retail. But Bastion wasn't a retail release or full price. Same with Portal. Same with a lot of smaller games.

Yes that's what I like most about Yahtzee between all the cynical jokes and fan-boy hate he really knows what he is talking about when it comes to what a game needs to be good.

Well I am willing to still paying full retail if the game itself makes up for not being more then a couple of hours long, such as the story and combat in Batman: AC. The main story was actually not that long what made it long is all the side missions but I was too busy bring taken in by the story and beating up thugs while proclaiming "I'm Batman" XD.
Though a fair few main stream titles like MW2, Space Marine and Dragon Age 2 in certain aspects didn't seem long enough, even though the only way they could make them longer would be by padding them out which probably would have done more harm then good.

I like it when comedians can also have a point. He's no George Carlin, but occasionally, you can pull a real line out, rather than a "your mum" joke.

I was under the impression Arkham City was significantly longer.

I'm honestly never bothered when a game like MW2 are short. They're really multiplayer games, and honestly, I think they should just stick to MP in the first place. The token campaign is more my problem than the length. I cant'speak to the others, though after DAO, I'm surprised DA2 is short in ANY sense.

Hit "enter" to carriage return, apparently, had send highlighted somehow.

Anyway, like I said, I loves me long games. But there are games I feel drag due to length.

I have a similar problem with Just Cause, where the map is large and that should be awesome, but there's so little to do.

For a normal sandbox, that map would be awesome. It's not the size that's a problem, it's that the activities are far between and turned into a chore by travel distances. and needing to hit a safehouse to save.

I'd LOVE a Saints Row Game on that epic scale. Scale's not the problem. It's bigger than it needs to be fore the content. That's the problem.

Lol yes very true, but he does have some quite funny "your mum" jokes.

Maybe it was, it's just it took me less then a week to have new game+ done since I bought it. I have become very good at finishing games quickly unless it's a RP game like Fallout because I have to go do everything before I finish the game :p

No I think that's very wrong, as I believe it is a step back in development to ignore one aspect of a game to focus solely on another when it is proven that a game can do both well.
Also the CoD series has always had a strong single player since CoD 1, where multiplayer wasn't very popular and the multiplayer only became really popular with the MW sub series which also had a great story to start with. Whilst, BF games are the reverse of this with essential being an MMO until the Bad company sub series proving they could make a soild and enjoyable single player.
I solely ment that DA2's main story is very short you leave home for your parents home, find your family, get some money to go on an expedition, do the expedition and become rich, find out a rebellion is happening and then stop it. And that's 2/3 of the main story gone, DA:O was much longer in this reguard.

I'm not familir with [Hit "enter" to carriage return], can you explain it?

Is this with Just Cause 1 and 2 or just 2? Far Cry 2 also had this problem.

I definitly agree there, it's not how big or small the scale is, what matter is if the scale fits the game properly.

Eh, I just ignore it. I'm not planning on getting it, I know what games I thought were best and what weren't, and I don't need a website to tell me what the best game of the year was. For me, it's not about scores, prestige, or competition in the game industry; it's about experiences, and I think that it's safe to say that every game, amazing, mediocre, or terrible, offers experiences that leave one reflective, and hopefully, satisfied.

Metacritic is a nice standard to compare games but, GOTY were given to games that weren't given the highest score. For example Red Dead Redemption got a GOTY but, SMG 2 was more critically acclaimed. Also with so many different GOTYs there is no way to that Skyrim will not get a GOTY from at least one website/magazine.

- No more dragging of objects a la Oblivion (or that I have found.)
- The UI... Okay maybe it was the best solution but...

And that's it. Those are the only things that nag me. I can get over them, eventually.
Hope I didn't come off as to nagging or hurtfull. Wasn't really my intention if it happened x.x
Step 1: Find item to drag
Step 2: Double-tap the select button; ie A for XBOX, X for PS3.
Step 3: Laugh maniacally as you drag all of the world's cheese to the gate to Whiterun!

On PC, Press and hold E (default control bind) while being near a moveable object to pick it up/drag it. Once you're draging it around you can let go of E though hehe :)

Not only is Skyrim the game of the year it's the best game to be released in a number of years.

and that people is an opinion.

Although i found it odd the OP is quoting metacritic (the website has a lot of problems, best to ignore it) and doesn't actually own the game yet feels the need to try and calm the hype.

2 choices, ignore the hype or jump on the bandwagon. i suggest you take the wagon, as it's awesome.

Darn. You figured it out.. Now I can't come off as knowledgeable :( oh well. Personally I dragged a wolf corpse to the sawmill in hmm.. I forget what that place is called. Saw mill, start of the game, eenyway. I flipped a log into the trough, put the wolf-carcass on top of it and proceeded to attempt to saw all of it in half. I was unfortunately unsuccessful. Well the log split, but not the Wolf. >.<

Don't ask me why, I'm weird and I make no apologies for it ^^

Don't worry, you can drag items around. I think you have to get through the beginning though
Define beginning. Four hours into the game and past the first dragon far enough yet?
:p
If your on xbox, hold A on something in order to drag it.
