I've been hearing this a lot but I never really saw what was so bad about the UI. I think it's rather perfect, apart from opening the menus being a little hectic.
It was designed for a controller, not a mouse. Navigating menus to flick between weapons and apparel, navigating conversations (no, number keys don't work, has to be mouse+mousewheel or cursor keys + Enter). Adjusting the system settings is equally frustrating. The perks constellation thing is frustrating and often I end up flying totally the wrong direction.

Dragon Age II had a fantastic perks/tree system that worked and worked well. Baldur's Gate II is maybe a decade old and has a better and easier to use inventory system. The FoV is not suited for a widescreen and I feel sorry for console owners who can't change it. At least I was able to spend ages tweaking ini files (which didn't work), then bring up dev console to make it a reasonable amount.

These are small things that add up and take away from the overall experience. Exploring, sneaking, sticking arrows in bandits and stealing a horse are great fun. But then having a conversation after or trying to deal with a storekeeper are infuriating. A flawed master piece that could have been done better but was not.

The best fuckin' RPG I've ever played. And I never played Oblivion or Morrowind before either.

I'm having a hard time playing. Not because of technical difficulties, but because the game is so bland and uninteresting. And people said MW3 lacks innovation.

I love it, but it's not without it's faults.
The UI and hotkey system in Oblivion was better. It seems to me like they want the combat to be strategic, like decide which spells to use, which weapons... but then when you actually get to any sort of challenging combat, your constantly in the menus, or the favorite list. What the hell was wrong with assigning favorites to a 8-slot wheel like in Oblivion!. It should let you at least use heal magic. Having the 2 weapon slots to switch between is useless - 2 slots is not enough when you have magic to worry about.

Personally I'd like to have seen a spell cast quick list - like press a button, game halts, select a spell, then cast it just by selecting from a list. It's just not as fluid as it could have been, they should have learned from Oblivion and Fallout, the hotkey wheel worked, why on earth is a favorite list and 2 slots any better!.

But I do love the game, and I'm sure I'll get used to the retarded hotkey setup they have. The irony is that people doubted the UI on the console port of Oblivion, yet Skyrim is aimed at consoles, and the UI is more convuleted than ever. It just seems lazy to me - like they couldn't be arsed doing any more UI graphics, so text will just have to do. Even some icons to signify different weapons would be nice, it's too texty for my liking.

Congratulations.
You have developed an opinion all by yourself.
If this is a first for you, don not be scared.
It is normal to think differently from your peers.

I wanted to hate it, I really didnt like Oblivion. But they have nailed it.. Skyrim is excellent! and finally an Elder Scrolls game thats better/on par with Morrowind. I have been a fan of the Elder Scroll games since Daggerfall and this is one of the best.

Oh BTW... the music is as good as people have been saying. I usually dont leave on music in games like this very long but so far thru 20 hours of play I love it.. its really engrossing

The lesson to learn here is this: never believe the hype.

Its incredibly hard for a highly anticipated game to live up to the inevitably huge amount of hype it receives.

Skyrim is awesome, but of course it was never going to be quite as good as the hype made out.

What the hell made you think it would be like WoW? Honestly, do some research before you buy games, otherwise you deserve to be disappointed. Although at this point I'm not sure if you are just incredibly misinformed or a troll. Really could go either way at this point.
Don't you think its a bit more likely that he meant 'WOW' as in amazing...?

As you're only reading text, its probably worth considering both meanings of a word before you go off at someone for talking nonsense and end up looking like a fool yourself.

I love it. Especially after I made my 2nd character when I knew what I wanted to do.
I did the same thing. Played for a bit as an imperial who used conjuration, ended up scrapping that and went for a Nord Sneaky-warrior.

so it was hyped/over hyped.
is that really a suprise to anyone anymore?

all your life if you live in the west; you live with hyped/over hyped everything. therefore i really think you have no one to blame but yourself for falling into the trap of believing it.
hopefully you'll learn from it.

i may sound jaded from time to time, but its the way the system works everything is made out to be shiny-er, new-er, better-er than what preceeded.
"dont get your hopes up" may sound miserable, but its actually provided me with pleny of pleasent suprises when i do try new things

It's certainly not as good as everyone says.

It's better.

This game is f*cking amazing. I could nitpick this little thing, and that little thing, but overall, there is so little to complain about relative to all the things they got either right or amazingly right that's it seems pointless to discuss those small flaws. At least until they start to work on Elder Scrolls 6. Then I can point out how there's room for improvement in the character conversation animations.

Sheath your weapon. So far I have found this game to be the most enjoyable one I've played in years.

If you compare it to Oblivion then it's a gem, really.
For oblivion I held no real love... The characters looked a bit weird, the dialogue system put me off, lock picking was a small pain and I found that there was a lack of immersion in that game but Skyrim looks a lot better now.

I'm only a few hours in the game but it's like they took the best things from Fallout 3 and New Vegas along with the best things of Oblivion and merged them seamlessly.

Totally, I used to really like going to a game store, and making the counter-trolls look at me funny with the weird games I'd buy. Like Harvest Moon on the GameCube, I got a lecture about that - yet I played that game to death, it's awesome. It's why I prefer to go shopping alone, too many people telling people what not to buy based on their own short-sightedness, total buzz kills. Anyway your right - it's when you take a little gamble and make no assumptions that you find your favorite games, games that a lot of other people just wouldn't look at... I mean I can't be the only mid-30's male on the planet who got obsessed with Pikmin.

Well, it is as far away from a bad game as it can get, but its just shy of my yard stick for immersive amazing RPGness Morrowind, it was soooooo close it hurts, but anyhoo, yes it is quite the amazing game, the scenery is breathtaking and it adds alot of stuff that really needed to be in TES (Crafting your own armour, cooking, easier alchemy & enchating etc) that does help it make it more immersive than Oblivion, infact ALOT more immersive but it's just not up there with Morrowind.
