I made a wood-elf archer, concentrating on archery, sneak, light armour (as much as you can concentrate on getting hit, anyway) and lockpicks.
With 2x sneak bonus, I can pretty much kill most common enemies with 1 arrow. Only the tougher dudes, like Restless Draugirs, take some more, but I can take 'em out with a 2handed sword I keep just in case easily.

This is on normal btw.
I actually like how much damage archery does now. I remember in Oblivion I could shoot 10 arrows in the face of a generic bandit, and still doing no damage.
You seem like the person I'd like to talk to then. ^_^

Haven't got Skyrim yet (will probably be getting it for christmas), so I'm just curious. It's possible to play an all-archer character, then?
A fan of archery myself (got my own longbow, arrows, target etc.), I love playing an archer in any game in which it's actually possible to play as one efficiently...

Well I was able to kill the troll after buying some more powerful magic from Dragonsreach's court magician. Had to rely on backpedaling and using the environment and my magic to take him out.

Also, to those who say Skyrim is easy:

Nah I kid.

Seriously though. I was on the Companions questline and have just gotten through the Proving Honor quest. There was one room where there were huge amounts of enemies. And they killed me numerous times. Farkas couldn't even handle all those guys. So as a result they would gang bang on me. It wasn't until I used a fire storm scroll to clear the group that I was able to get through. God damn...

Don't worry...it gets harder after the game glitches your two best weapons away that you made and improved yourself while your in an environment full of omniscient guards, leaving you with only your sneak skill and two daggers. I love this game, but that is really annoying.

I'm playing on Expert, and I'd say the difficulty's just right. There are several enemies which have stomped me with one or two blows, and others which were a cakewalk. Probably depends how you play, plus you might just be a really good player or a liar, OP.

Man, the dark brotherhood quests get hard, like killing the jester, the final guardian in the area keeps like 3 hitting me.

To be honest i find the dragons easier to kill than trolls, giants, overlord draugs (this was a real fun battle...running round in circles after you disarmed me...my magic ain't the greatest...) etc and that's on the medium settings, i thought the dragons were meant to be badass? All it takes is 6-7 shots with my bow to kill them.

I kind of have to agree. While I still think the dragons are quite tough, I fought one recently who was distracted by a mammoth. The mammoth held his own, and it pretty much did most of the work in killing it.

Can't wait for the day I get to fight and kill one legitimately...

Dammit.

I thought the game was hard. I just suck, apparently.
The answer to this statement is "no." You do not suck.

In every table top RPG I've ever played- and Bethesda makes Elder Scrolls games that are like digital table top experiences, if you made a dedicated combatant where you ignored everything else in the world to focus all skills, talents, attributes, etc, you would be a kill machine. I'm willing to bet the OP has invested little to no perks into social talents, alchemy, or magic. He's probably a one man death march with a two handed weapon, and that's how he dominates melee combat. Give him a social quest that's more than "deliver X to Y person" and I'm sure the game will give him something to worry about. It just won't be as immediate a worry as death in the battlefield.

Ive actually died a lot compared to oblivion, maybe its just because i suck or i was ill-prepared but it took me 3 times to kill the first dragon
I've died a lot too, but I actually haven't been killed by a dragon yet - the only way I survived the first encounter was running up to the top of the tower and running back down when it targeted me. Actually, every time I've died it's been because of those stupid giants. I quickly learned to sprint my archer ass past those things.

Yeah, OP is just pouring all his level up points into "Bash Skull In" perks. Sorry, but archery really isn't exactly hard in Skyrim - the dragons are some of the least difficult enemies. They're one of the few that seem to progress level-wise with you (since you're expected to kill one rather early on), so saying that they're difficult because you have to shoot them just proves you're bad at the game mechanics beyond "aim sword and mash button to hack limbs off".

No.
Just no.

I am playing an archer with a back-up sword and light shield for the "Shit's hit the fan fights" and I am loving it. I swear, Oblivion bows were about as good as your fists. Worse, probably.

Skyrim is just right. I can easily kill a few enemys from range, but when they close with me, that's when the challenge hits. I have to fight, unlike Oblivion. Why? Because Oblivion was just swinging a sword non-stop, then hold your block.... wait... wait... then swing again... wait.

Skyrim though, is quick, exciting combat. Yes, they might die in a few blows. So might I. Put it this way. These are some of my amazing moments in Skyrim:

Sneaking up through a group of bandits, wiping them out one by one with my bow. I wasn't seen once. It was amazing to see them fall silently.

First time fighting bandits, one of them had a great sword. I killed him, then looted it. As the other bandit charged me, I stabbed with the sword, he basicily ran onto it, then I kicked him off the sword and ran towards the last bandit. I swung at him, lifting him into the air, and bringing my blade back down, kicking his body off.

Running through the hills, I saw a fight between a dragon and a giant. I fled up a mountain as the dragon chased me. I jumped from rock to rock, loosing arrows at the dragon. I got to the top, where there was a bit of a clearing. I shot arrow after arrow, then he hovered in front of me. I knew he was going to shoot fire at me, so I jumped. I landed on a ledge below as fire engulfed the clearing. I got back up, and shouted at the dragon with fire breath. He landed on the clearing, and with my sword, I executed the dragon. As I stood on the mountain, I stole his soul. All of that was done while the awesome music played. I mean, really.

That is the most epic song. Ever. Of all time.

(Cookies for anyone who gets that)

Oblivion meanwhile:

Um.... I.... erm.... Saw a mudcrab? Nasty creatures.

I don't know about that. I've found the game to be really freakin' hard most of the time.

My character is about lvl 27, specializing in sneak, bows, one-handed, and destruction. Up until around lvl 15, the bows were really effective for killing things at a distance. Now, however, even with the x3 damage bonus, they barely take a quarter off the health of most bad guys I come across.

The x15 bonus for daggers is nice, but it's so hard to actually sneak up to someone in this game. For some reason, certain enemies have almost telepathic vision, while others are blind as a bat. I've noticed Forsworn, bears, and a few other enemies can detect you right away, the minute you move a muscle.

What's worse, destruction levels up so slowly it's almost useless as a damage-doing specialization. Oblivion had the same freakin' problem.

I've played around 25 hours now, and have only discovered maybe a quarter of the map. Still a long ways to go...

EDIT: Oh yeah, I'm playing on Expert difficulty, which is second hardest. Btw, why did they decide to replace Journeyman with Adept? Seems like a pretty pointless cosmetic change.

I'm playing on adept as a stealthy archer with a bit of illusion magic, and I really can't say it's easy, level 20 and just killed the second story dragon, boy was it hard, the fire breath just rips through my health, and specializing in sneak attacks and enemy manipulation via illusion leaves me rather helpless in a head-on fight like a dragon.

And using rage on an enemy sentry on the walls of a fortress never gets old.

I had a dragon land in the middle of the mage's college earlier...I just stood there and got a free soul...

I never understood there's always at least one person who plays on the hardest difficulty of any game and always says it's easy. I've had quite a bit of hell on a few Skyrim quests, so I don't see how you're "One shotting everyone"
I know what you mean man, I've been fucked over far too many times for my liking so far in Skyrim. I'm level 15 atm specializing in destruction magic and axes and I can't comprehend how someone could simply be that good that the game. Hell, I turned the difficulty down to apprentice and it's still fucking hard in points.
Especially those fucking finishing moves. I hate it SO MUCH that enemies can perform finishers on you when you're on low health, it's just fucked. Hey Bethesda, I DON'T LIKE BEING STABBED IN THE GUTS REPEATEDLY.
I'm fine with the finishers, what drives me crazy are the dragon encounters, those things are pretty tough, the worst part was after an ESPECIALLY brutal mission (I wont spoil anything, let's just say it involves "Northwatch Hold" and the Greymanes, you'll probably get it if you know those two) A dragon spawned right outside the place, it was in an isolated part of Skyrim so I could either, outrun the dragon or pray to the Nine that a few NPCs would come along to help me fight the thing.
I dunno, I've found the dragons to be fairly easy. What really shits me is that I can cleave my way through a dragon no problem, but I'll get my ass handed to me on a platter by almost any magic-user.
And I guess I hate those finishers because you'll still have a bit of health left that you could have used fighting, but it's all just taken out in a very in-your-face style, that seems to beckon "Well well, looks like you just suck, amiright?"

I don't know how you're using them effectively, I have two steel daggers, and I've pretty much just been spamming both mouse buttons to do the cross cut and then using the power attack with both, I seem to kill most human characters, but I end up having only a silver of health left because you really can't seem to do anything about defense with daggers. Especially with being sneak and forced to wear light armor, its somewhat hard having to split points between stealth, one handed, and archery. Whereas my second character I just went 2handed and archery and I'm just steam rolling people left and right.
And with daggers I'm having an insanely hard time to attack the bigger enemies, especially ones you really can't sneak up on, without that sneak attack bonus I get flattened damn near instantly. Like the werewolf encounter, when I got him to a sliver of his health I couldn't do enough damage with the daggers to beat his self heal, I had to switch to fire magic for both hands to take him out.
Well I got my hands on an enchanted Orc dagger and an Elven dagger, so I use them. I didn't bother using daggers until I had them, the steel and iron ones didn't seem to be useful. I don't use them all the time either, only when I'm sneaking around. Most of the time I have a fine Blades sword and healing combo on the go, so daggers aren't a massive focus unless the situation calls for it.

Same here. The first story dragon was very hard, particularly as I decided to charge straight at the beast without support and was promptly barbecued and carved to pieces. Every other dragon though has been strangely easy, causing me to suspect that they aren't scaling correctly to my level. They're still fun to fight though, and can get very tense if they attack a populated area. I have a something of a hero complex in games like this, and I absolutely must save everyone.

On the other hand I keep getting my ass handed to my by groups of enemies. One on one, even the toughest, battle-axe wielding bandit will go down without having to dip into healing spells and potions, but give that bandit a buddy and I'm in for a damned tough fight. That goes double for groups of spiders. That troll on the seven thousand steps was an absolute pain as well. Gangs of mages can be a nightmare if I go about it wrong, but because of their abysmal armour they become trivial if I can down one or two before they all open up. Even with a low level, un-perked marksman and sneak skill, a sneak attack arrow can bring one down, making the fight considerably easier.

I didn't even know I was playing on Master until I checked - I heard the difficulty was dynamic so I didn't bother, but when I did I found out I was on Master. The thing is, if you can one shot an enemy with a great sword; you can pretty much kill everything in less than 10 swings - just depends how well your armour protects you. I use full superior wolf plate, which is pretty decent - I have no upgrades in the heavy armour tree. I pretty much kill everything that has poison with a bow or spells.
How did you not know you're playing on Master? You start as "Adept" and you have to manually change it (well, at least on PS3 so I'm assuming here). Did you change it and then forgot that you have done so?

I've level up now a little and the game is fine. It's not too easy nor too difficult. I'm not foolish enough to try playing it on Master though. I favour bows and sneaking, but I'll leave the giants be for now :)
