I have close to 100 hours played and I still have not finished several of the major quest lines, like the civil war, nor the main quest line. Part of the reason is that when my first character reached level 20 or so I decided to make a new one. And when my new character hit level 25 I decided to play on the first one again. ^^

Also I get distracted with side quests and exploration all the time. And ofc I need to tidy up my manor in Solitude now and then.

Unfortunatly the latest patch have made my game unplayable. I get memory leaks that make the game lagg like there is no tomorow. So I can't play untill Bethesda starts cleaning up the mess the have made.

I'm in about 50 hours. I haven't completed any of the major sidequests. I bouncing it would seem for plot to plot. Also when I saw the Nightengale armor I said "fuck the world" I'm a gonna be Revan!!!!!!!!!
-Reads "I'm gonna be Revan!!!!!!!!!"
-Googles Nightengale armor.

Damn...guess I'd better go do those Thieves Guild quests so.

OT: Has anyone else stayed away from certain guilds depending on their character build? My guy doesn't use magic at all so I'm staying away from the Mages College for this playthrough...or at least I would've liked to if I didn't HAVE to join them in order to get into Saarthal.

Seriously, that kinda pissed me off.

Anyways, 74 hours in and I've only just learned of the
Dragonrend Shout and the Elder Scroll
so it's time for me to take another several day break from the main quest. Maybe level enchanting for a bit or craft some deadric weapons....find all the shrines....complete some of the dozens of miscellaneous quests I've picked up simply by exploring or find the remaining shouts and
go dragon hunting with my squad of Blades. Although would it have killed Bethesda to make a light variation of the Blades Armor?

Some people like to finish the main quest in a hurry. To be totally honest with you, I haven't the faintest idea why. I've spent a hell of a lot of time on Oblivion and I have never once actually completed the main quest. There's just so much else which I could be doing that's so much more fun than it.

It's roughly the same with Skyrim, even if the main quest is better due to a lack of "Go here, close four Oblivion gates, lather, rinse, repeat.". I still do enjoy messing around and doing sidequests a hell of a lot more than I do constantly campaigning for the destruction of dragons.

Im about 120 in my first game and ive done all the main stories except the companions because it glitched. I can't remember how long it took me but I know I was past level 50 before I finished the main story.

On my second game im about 25 hours in and not even done the golden claw mission yet.

I must be 80 hours in. Still haven't done more than the first five main story quests. My first 40-50 hours were spent doing every dungeon and side/misc quest I came across. After doing that and clearing basically everything in the bottom half of the map I've been doing the guild quests for the last 30-40 hours - just the thieves guild to go now. Maybe once that's done I will finish the main quest. I might get side-tracked by choosing a side and doing the remaining daedric quests though...

I'm level 58 btw

I'm in 137 hours, I've only just crush the rebellion...
Though I've been the boss of every guild for a while... Like a boss.

Next storylline quest I have to do is "Diplomatic Immunity"...
But first I want to master enchanting, so I can enchant my legendary Daedric equipment so it at least recharges magica at the same rate as archmage robes and Morokei.
And maybe some resistances...
Those Forsworn Briarhearts with their lightning are a bit hard...
In fact, I have problems fighting most high level mage types...
i have found shield to the face does wonders against mages. and two handed types. and dragons.
actualy. shield to the face rocks :p

just checked steam: 102.1 hrs according to steam, 28/50 achievements

i haven't done much of the main quests at all, just a few quests in, about to hit the softcap. Maxed sneak/archery, maxing illusion next before hitting softcap, have other perks spread around. Did thieve's and companaions, avoided the magic college for a later playthrough w/a magic character, did a ton of side quests though, have seen a lot of the side-quests in the game i think but there's still plenty undone that I'll be able to see for the first time in later playthroughs.

Once i hit the softcap i may start in on the main quests at long last.

next character will be pure mage, max difficulty. maybe 'dead-is-dead' rules, or i might save starting on DID games until after my second playthrough.

good times.

I keep remaking characters since I can never stick to the goal I set out, i.e ignore that quest, don't join that faction etc etc. But even if you do finish Skyrim's main quest does it really matter? The game still continues the only difference is people won't be yelling at you to go fight Alduin or whatever. I still haven't beaten the game ha ha so I'm just talking out my ass as far as what the people would say after the story.

Guys, it's wonderful to see that at least few of you play this game like it was meant to be played. I'm proud of you. No. Really i am. Thank you. :)

Who cares how quickly you finish the game? Why is it your problem anyway, let people play how they want to (...)
Why do you think i have problem with that ? I'm simply curious.
The bit I bolded is why I think you had a problem with it.
Like i said before : I don't have any problem with people playing games as they wish to. I'm simply curious why they do it that way. I find it a little weird that despite me stating that clearly you're still playing that card. :)

Well, I'm sorry if I didn't go through every single one of the posts in this thread, I just thought it best to directly reply to your question. Therefore, my only knowledge was that you were under the impression that there was this one way that the game is "meant to be played"... which is why I thought you DID have a problem with people playing the game how they wanted to. The only bits that you stated clearly to me, personally was that you think there is one way to play the game and that you were wondering why people 'rushed' through the game.

Anyway...
You say "immersed". That's interesting...
Ok, let's elaborate : how could you/your character possibily know that Alduin wants to destroy world ?

Because, after surviving the attack my character did what he thought was best and warn the nearest city, Whiterun, of the dragons. After helping out around there and slaying a dragon that attacked, he absorbed it's soul and was told he could very well be a Dragonborn. With this, he was advised to see the Greybeards. After meeting a member of the Blades while doing a task for them, he joined her in a dragon hunt. They then looked into the dragon resurrections and discovered that Alduin had returned, as was prophesied. Also in the prophecy was that a Dragonborn would return to fight him.
With that, he saw it as his destiny to stop the destruction of the world, and did so by eventually slaying Alduin.

I survived initial attack, killed one or two dragons, did Hrothgars quests, wandered here and there, doing a little this and that, sided with Blade's agent, spoke with some people, stole some things, and still i have (or rather my heroine has) no clue about motivation of dragons or whoever is responsible for their return.
Hell, nobody does. Hrothgars, most powerful wizards, advisors to Jarls are only scratching their heads, and producin some rumours, speculations about why dragons are back, but still, nothing solid, nothing substantial.
Yet you say you felt time running out. Not only Skyrim's (as i understand) but whole world's. How's so ?

Nope, said nothing about time running out actually.
While your character clearly wasn't that interested in why he absorbed a dragon soul or what significance it might have, mine most definitely was, and so his dedication to discover more about the subject led him to, with the help of the Blades and Greybeards, find that Alduin had returned to destroy the world. My character's nature would be to seek to defeat him anyway, but since he was mentioned in the prophecy itself, Dragonborn, he felt a personal duty to save the world.

And please bear in mind : what drives me is curiosity. If i'd like to offend you, this conversation would be different. ;)

Just so it doesn't drive you as crazy as it did me, you HAVE to do the College quests to get in to Saarthal for the final piece of that amulet. At least, I think it's Saarthal piece... I know one of them is only attainable through the College questline.
Great... so when that guy from the college never showed up at Saarthal, that's two quest lines I got cut off of. =\

Good point OP. I mean, anyone can play the game however they want, but I agree with you.

Personally, I decided not to go to High Hrothgar since, much like the OP's character, my Illusionist-Thief Dark Elf had no patience for all of this Dragonborn nonsense, true or not. No, he deemed the dragons shouts to be fairly barbaric and useless and resolved to embark on a mini-odyssey across the countryside, through the frozen wastelands, enduring the attacks of wolves and porkers, the occasional bandit, a frost troll ambush and even a standoff with a Dragon who took him by surprise. Finally he reached Winterhold an enrolled in the College there.

So yeah. I'm convinced that this game was designed with the intent to keep the main quest as optional. Which is pretty Unique, when you think of it.

Wow. I've been playing it for weeks almost non-stop and I still haven't finished. Partly because I started a few different characters but still...

Also, as far as I'm concerned, the "main quest" is whatever the hell you want it to be. If you think the Dark Brotherhood is your character's main quest, or the Empire versus the Stormcloaks, no one really has any right to argue with you, because you can totally structure your game around any of those quests the same way a linear game would structure itself around its central quest.

Because it isn't real. You are not a hero. Side quests are a waste of time that at best, get repetitive after the first ten.

Steam says I'm only 67 hours, and I've beat the main quest and the civil war with two different characters. I like the scripted, more varied content, but I still spend a lot of time doing RPG things.
