So I get this link to a video on youtube to a series called "Marble Hornets" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wmhfn3mgWUI&feature=channel]

It's cool, very scary. You might notice that all the "Marble Hornets" videos have comments disabled; but on a related video I found people commenting about "The Slender Man."

So I googled and very quickly found it was a meme; that started on a 'show your photoshop ghost pictures' thread on the Something Awful forums. [http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3150591&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=3]

Myth solved. Or maybe not.

To save you the forum lurking; I'll go over it briefly. A guy called 'Victor Surge' posts two photos of a tall figure, in a black suit. He notes;
"its persistent silence and outstretched arms horrified and comforted us"

In a later post he describes how he came up with the idea on the spot, and the thread runs with the myth adding all sorts of mythos to it.

Curiously before the thread was derailed into a "Slender man" thread one poster (Beerdeer) noted how he had heard of the myth before; before Victor explained the creation of the character. He then later edited the post to state that he was lying and simply wanted to see more of those pictures.

However, the myth of a tall or slender man has been with society for a while. It was present in the movie "Phantasm" (Where the OP states he got inspiration.)The Mothman Prophecies was in the same theme; as well as much of HP Lovecraft. As well as in alot of other fiction.

The constant trend in all mythos is that the more research put into the search for the entity; the more that it comes in contact with the researcher. This leads to two outcomes. Substantial works never published on the mythos, other than fiction. And retractions of sighting/knowledge etc. Such as in the SA forums, and elsewhere.

I even have a real link to an Academic Journal that leads me to the conclusion that there is truth behind this; it's a law journal mainly about murder cases which turn into insanity pleas. It talks about brutal murders in which the defendants claim that something not human performed the act of murder. The case study used is almost identical to some of the stuff I've seen online. Give me a moment to find it on JSTOR and I'll post a link; I can't remember the journal title.

So I know people are instantly going to jump on this and claim that it is all untrue, etc etc etc. But this isn't a true or not thread. I'm making an appeal for info on this unfindable entity; simply as a starting point.

So what can you find to help validate this myth?

Ehhh? Pardon my ignorance, but I still have no clue what the fuck this "Slender Man" is. All I could gather was that some really tall entity that goes around and murders people.

Please elaborate, because I am completely out of the loop...

It's a meme started on Something Awful; it originated as a "make scary photoshops" thread but soon turned into a Slenderman thread when everyone realized that it was a lot creepier than anything else they made.

Since then it's evolved into a complex story, but you've got the basics: he's a tall, supernatural being who finds, haunts, and kills people. He's the thing you roll your eyes at during the day but can't get out of your head at night, because you feel like he's watching you. He'll also look into your bedroom window at night. Even if you're on the second floor.

I I got an idea about this whole Slender Man mythos, and I think I have a good hunch on how it all started. Ever notice how in the evening sun, your shadow gets really elongated? Bam! Slender man. I think he's just based on our shadows...

I watched that video in the dark, while no-one was around. Bad idea. Dead Space did only make me startle once, and this simple, viral video did a buttload more than that.

He'll also look into your bedroom window at night. Even if you're on the second floor.

The only thing that I laughed at was the the cliched "moving swings" in the park in entry 3 or 4. That was the moment that I discredited these videos as fake. Clever, and well executed. but fake.
