For many games, sniping seems to involve finding somewhere quiet and out of the way and gunning down randoms like you're in a bell tower.

Not so in TF2.

Once you've found a vantage point and killed someone, everyone knows you're there. You'll have to dodge rockets and grenades, pray that the Scouts won't see you and if a Spy finds you...oh, those wacky spies.

TF2 is a great game for sniping, as it offers a real challenge for fans of that sort of gameplay.

don't get me wrong, operation flashpoint is my favourite game of all time, but i wouldn't recommend practicing sniping in it. it's got real bullet ballistics, which are non-existent in pretty much every other game. most games these days have no care for realism (except games like R6: Vegas) and speed up combat. this is all fine and makes for some kick-ass games that are well balanced, but can make sniping really hard.

getting good at sniping in a fast-paced game (like the original unreal tournament) will set you up for anything u could encounter later on. sniping in most games is nothing like what it is in real life, so its more a matter of being good at the game ur playing rather than at sniping

Yeah a lot of it is positioning, not in many games is it actually super difficult to hit an enemy, more about trying to find somewhere that is not too obvious but in good view of a Command Post, choke point, or vital pathway. In something like Battlefield 2 (which most of my tips apply to, haven't got the hang of Team Fortress 2 sniping yet), it's important to keep a lookout for assault or engineer types getting sick of being pegged by you and coming after you. Even so you should at least move to somewhere slightly different every 3-4 kills. This can be a great payoff when an assault class reaches the top of you old sniping point only to get taken out by you from your new sniping point.

If you looking at generating kills while denying enemy vehicle support, an overlooked tactic is camping near a vehicle spawn point and taking out players either before they get the prized jeep/tank/chopper, or even better, just as they get in it and are still stationary. In all BF 2 games no one can resist the lure of vehicles, meaning you have a good amount of mooks to take out.

Surely all you have to do is put the word 'sniper' in your username somewhere, and you will find the 'skillz' handed down to you by your relavant deity. Because no-one with the the name xxxsnip3r1337xx could possibly be a bad sniper, right?

Personally, I hate sniping; I like TF2 because you can go Spy and stab them all, making life so much easier. (And more enjoyable)

Personally, sniping is all about practice. In Counter Strike, ALWAYS crouch, and you can pretty much snipe with any weapon that isn't an SMG.

Sniping is fun, but running into the battlefront, screaming, blowing up everything around you (Eventually getting killed by a sniper...grumble...) seems SO much more appealing than hiding.

Sniping in Battlefield 2 is a bit hit and miss not just of skill but because the hitboxes are so bad.

However once you have the hang of it, its awesome.

3: Get used to hitting moving targets. A big problem with TF2 snipers is that they tend to sit and have little sniper circle jerk battles with other snipers which actually does fuck all for your team. I've prevented plenty of captures on TF2 simply by popping the medic who's following behind a combat class.
Nothing but truth, especially on the likes of 2Fort.

Also: Putting mouse sensitivity up will definitely improve your game, as well as the other points mentioned.

I got my skill on BF2.. i used to play like 5 hrs a day, i was so good i was always top score, even beat the medics and tankers!

My advice:
- Practice with your mouse set the sensitivity and get used to it, it will greatly reduce the time you need to hit someone.

- RELOCATE! Sniping is NOT i repeat NOT camping!!! If you got a good spot use it for a while but when people figure out where you are you need to move. And if you got used to your mouse's sensitivity you can actually go around as if you were a regular class, you can snipe medium and close range if you are confident enough

- Sniper rifles in games usually dont have crosshairs or they do but they are very wide. Keep in mind if you expect someone at very close range (in a building or smthng) you dont necessarily need to pull out your pistol especially if you have a semi auto rifle (Dragunov, M21)

I hate snipers. Everybody goes 'sniper' these days. Some of the maps on CoD4 and Battlefield:BC get ridiculous, just 10 snipers versus another 10, with one lonely guy with an assault rifle (me).

I find that depends on whether or not deathcam is on. Deathcam nerfs snipers to hell.

My buddy who snipes HATES the deathcam, but w/e. I find I usually skip it so fast it doesn't even help me!

I say just keep trying different games. CoD4, I suck, Halo I'm pretty good, Gears I was AMAZING. I even got the no scope/blind fire headshot. How I WISH there was a replay sequence in that game. The guy on the opposing team told me he only saw a hand and then his head explode.

Best moment in Gears I ever had... well besides getting a no scope headshot on a guy that was curb stomping an ally and watching his foot lower, head explode, and then slowly fall backwards in the stomping stance and then reviving my ally going "HOLY @(#$* (@#*$ (@#*$ !!! HOLY @#$(*! that was AWESOME!"

... I love Gears ^___^

I usually started sniping in halo (Learn't loads there) which was relatively easy compared with UT3 where split second timing is everything, then I tried sniping in TF2 In my opinion much easier to snipe there.

So Basically Practise makes perfect but trying sniping in different games wont hurt. Learn new tricks =D

Get used to your game's hitboxes. A TF2 hitbox is much different to a Halo hitbox, and etcetera.

Cover is your best weapon. If you have the time to aim, then seek cover.

Practice scoping and firing as quick as you can. Snap aiming/firing from the hip is something that will take ages to master, but is useful in the long run.

How it's possible to fail at sniping on Halo i'll never know; it takes two hits anywhere on the body and there dead.

I disagree. One or two Snipers are rather essential(Mostly so in the CTF maps)if only to keep their snipers from popping you one. And those sniper wars are a good way to improve at it, since you want to be able to shoot the other guy first.

Halo 3 me and my freinds do loads of free for all sniper games, it's all about practice. Eventually we got bored and went online, the first match we got was shotty snipers and we won 50-0 without using a shotgun. A truly epic match.

Try playing Halo Sniper matches over and over again. Practice makes perfect. COD4 might be able to help you to. I would not recommend BF2 because you can have somone perfectly lined up and still not hit them.

1. Point the crosshair.

2. Click.

3. Repeat.

Okay, maybe that works only for games which have ridiculously overpowered sniper rifles with no sniper sway and unlimited range. But as others have said, change your position often, aim for the head and always get the overpowered sniper rifle before anyone else.
