Hey guys, I was wondering...
One thing that always bothers me is that about 70% of gamers will go into a shooter and immediately pick the sniper rifles. Every single goddamn time. I really don't understand this as I can't see how something as slow-paced as sitting back and picking off enemies one-by-one from a mile away can be very much fun. So to those of you who use the snipers, what on Earth is so damn appealing about them?
Thanks
What annoys me if when the server is modded so every weapon is a sniper. This happens a lot with Halo, and I'm fucking sick of it. Its become the MLG pro gamer mentality that sniping headshots are ub3r 1337

Well any sniper who sits back waiting to pick of prey is doing it wrong...
I reality the most effective snipers in games are the ones that set up, pick, shoot, move. Games life BFBC2 with the reckon are good because off stopping (in non HC mode) they become what they are meant to be, a reckon unit to give the team knowledge of what is going on around them.

It's not always lying around waiting for some random to walk past. In Modern Warfare and other games, people (if they are good) will run around and do something called quick-scoping and they are usually the ones that get the highest score. But i guess if your not skilled you indeed DO lay down and pick of one-by-one.

Distance. Sniper rifles have the greatest range of any rifle, and normally any weapon period, in just about any game. And if I can kill you from roughly twice the range of your assault rifle and about six times the effective range of your shotgun, you're dead, and I'm not. It's a matter of efficiency.

I don't snipe much. It feels too...cheap. What I mean about that is that in a lot of games, a sniper rifle is a one-shot-kill, if customised properly (eg: Intervention with FMJ and Stopping Power on MW2 or any Sniper Rifle on BC2 Hardcore Mode). I prefer games like Halo make you aim for the head if you want a one-shot-kill, and at least that takes some amount of skill.

sniping is an art. the recon class is all about sniping, stealth C4, and knifing....

you watch your prey.... they stand still to unload a clip into a squad...you blow his brains out......you're sptted you change position and kill an entire squad by sniping....your squad call you for reinforcments.. you run up to a bradly and and blow it up with some c4...you arm the charge...rinse repeat only add 90% more awsomeness and intensity

plus in bad company 2, lotsa MW2 fags stand still alot and camp in the open air or in a shrub.
its fun killing em

I don't snipe much I usually end up sneaking up on the snipers and knifing them.
OT. I think it's the safety of the position allowing you to stay alive a lot longer then assault rifles who have to go closer. So it's a lot easier to get kills and stay safe at the same time instead of having to risk close range combat.

Watching your prey, that's what they are at this point, move around, unaware of your presence and then BAM, a quick shot to the head. The loud, ringing noise still lingers ever so slightly in the area. A guttural cry that causes anyone who isn't you to panic.
Everyone, without even thinking, scatters like roaches in the middle of an illuminated kitchen. Doesn't matter where they go, any cover is good cover at this point, but they don't want to stay there. You're there.

These moments of pure excitement are worth the slow, tedious routines of waiting.

That's why I feel compelled to anyway.
This was the whole reason I bought Splinter Cell: Conviction. Sneaking around a dark room full of enemies then coming up behind one and breaking his neck, then watching them all scatter as I mark and execute them.

Few things are as satisfying as hearing that sweet sweet sound of the sqelching that a resistance 2 heat shot produces. Especially if you hit the guy from clear across the map.

That would either give the best matches ever or the worst.

I snipe because it suits me, finding a place where u can see most the maps important points. Sit back, relax and then wait for prey to walk around to you. Also my first real FPS love was the original CoD and that had both snipers and bolt action rifles which i really enjoyed using, its a shame theirs no real bolt action rifles on CoD. Also i enjoy the funny sniper battles where you both meet eachother and then attempt either a no scope/whip out pistol/ run away. Sort of like when both their guns jam in Saving private ryan where they end up throwing their helmets at eachother.

They think they have skill think about it if you can get a headshot from 200+ yards away with one shot,
makes you feel a hell of a lot better than running in with a light machine gun spray at every enemy you see and getting out skilled -.- , it may be more fun to spray as many bullets as possible but in reality it gets you know where quickly and you get extremely pissed off when you are killed

Sniping in games like BC2 is effective, if you know what you're doing. Spotting enemies for your team, providing a spawn point for your squad, and giving cover fire for your team. So sniping is good, if you're a good player.

Sadly enough, 100% of snipers claim to be good, around 95% are often just your typical old frag hunters. That being said, 90% of the players in any game are just typical frag hunters.

I personally don't like sniping. It's not really that hard (although depends on the game), and more often than not, I'd contribute more if I played any other class. I like games like Battlefield, where the fight is a team effort, and snipers almost never contribute anything to the team.

i enjoy both... i usually take the sniper either in team fortress 2 to help my team or in cod in the large open maps .. counter strike has one of the worst snipers mechanics... there's no waving on the cross hair, no gravity, no travel distance its like cheating...

snipers mostly used cuz its fun to easily pick off enemies that should be a threat to you and
the whole cool factor behind it. a sniper is the most feared enemy in a battle field.

The reason for this is precisely because it's not fast paced. Not everyone wants their gaming experience to be Shooooooooooot dead, respawn Run Run Run Shoooooooot Run Run dead. I find constant running gunning and death to be quite dull. I want tactics and stealth in my games.

Sniping has been "cool" for a very long time. And people like to, as stated above, feel like the dealer of death. Let me tell you excactly what is more satisfying. Do as me, use assault rifles, shotguns a sniper rifle or whatever and ONLY go for the snipers. I have spent my entire ingame career in BF2 hunting for snipers, it is awesome! Being the angel of death to the angels of death, its just insanely satisfying!

Well... In recent Call of Duty games and even Battlefield games they have killed the "you don't know where I am" thing with their kill cams. Kill Cams tend to run things for me as I like to sneak about, no matter the class, and people always knowing where I shot from ruins a large part of my tactic.

Also, sniping in many games doesn't require skill to do. But as with almost all classes it requires skill to do it "well". You can use an assault rifle quite effectively right away, but a skilled player will still be better than you. Same goes for sniping. The only thing I don't aprove of is nub-tubers and people using AT rockets on infantry. Sure, if your skilled you can do it more efficiently, but it's just a really dick tactic to use! That AT-4 is for armor, not me! (PS, most effective sniper in BF2 atm is the AT weapon...) And grenade spam, need no skill there, its just about throwing enough grenades =3.

Since BF2 and BF 2142 the maps are so small that sniping isn't really all that fun any more. I miss the old days!
