I got 2 SDTV's hooked up in my basement. I play all my games on the smaller one because the bigger one has a big band across the bottom of it. The band turns anything red purple and anything blue becomes green. it not that big of a deal but id much rather use it for just watching TV with

I haven't had a TV for five years now. Good old 22" CRT monitor. But yeah, having no console either, PC only...

Well maybe i will buy one for the next generation or something.

6 TV's in this house, all of them Tube TV's, so ya SD is what I'm used to having. Tried hooking up my 360 to HD TV's in the past, but I didn't see enough of a difference to make the switch.

Ignore mrpmpfan, he doesn't know what he's talking about:

Connecting your PS2 via component to your HDTV will allow your PS2 to show it's full potential.

Though PS2 doesn't pump out many pixels, only 480i though some games support 480p which can ONLY be reached with component-cables.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_2_games_with_HD_support

Colour will be much nicer as the analogue signals are separated by colour so they don't blend into each other. Really, if you want to keep plying your PS2 then get component cables for a HDTV.

but it won't change the actual native resolution, MGS3 will still be rendered at only 480 vertical resolution which just is not all that much detail. But there will be less interference and could enable 480p which will make it look better.

Also to note: your HDTV may just have a terrible scaling algorithm (up from 480p to 720p or 1080p), that may be solved by switching to component cables.
I only have MGS2/3, DMC3, Persona 4, and a few games coming in the mail (Socom 2, Twisted Metal, Max Payne 2, and a few others).

Can you confirm if these games will look noticeably better? I know they aren't Progressive-scan compatible. Will the component cables make them look less washed out?

I got an HDTV because its really all they sell and I need a light weight flat screen for my dorm room. (My old tv was big and bulky and could crush my toes). If it weren't for that, I'd play SD and I do play SD when moving my console to other TVs for various reasons. I know an HD whore who refuses to play on anything less then a 1080p HD and its really weird sometimes.

Confirm, yes. Guarantee, no.

See PS2 uses analogue output (composite or component) and to a HDTV which work's digitally there are no guarantees when those two have to get on with each other. But I'm very confident component cables will contribute towards undoing what you said earlier of "HDTV ruined my PS2 games" and will be an improvement. But they won't make PS2 look as good as HD-consoles.

Thanks for your help, I suppose forking over $20-$30 to try it is worth it if it means I can play on the bigger screen. I'm getting back into Ps2 games right now too, which is why I'm pretty stoked about it either way.

Thanks again, much appreciated.

Still SD, HD are still a bit too expensive so I'd have to have a much smaller screen and I can't really see any difference significant enough to be worth trading in my perfectly functional tv.

Because I would rather devote that money to my savings accounts and IRA when I don't *need* to spend it and my television more than suits my purposes as they are. It's kind of like having a nice blue shirt and then buying the same blue shirt for a hundred dollars more because it has a logo on it and is shimmery. It's prettier, sure, but it does basically the same thing in the end. :)
If $400 is a large amount of money to you, you might want to look for a new job that pays higher than minimum wage. Or even get two jobs.
I'm afraid you're missing the point. 400 dollars is not that much money to me, I just see no reason to spend it, especially when putting it away will end up getting me even more money later on in life. My television serves my purposes more than adequately, and I see no reason to replace it for what would be basically a graphical upgrade...and really, a relatively minor one at that.

I'll upgrade when my television fails me or they go on sale for really cheap. And I do have a pretty nice job as it is, thanks kindly.

I'm going to be honest, on my humble little 26" TV I can't really recognise any difference either HD or SD... nevertheless I've been on HD for a while now.

Some people, especially those of us in uncivilized parts of the world, still use SD TVs, since buying an HD would mean we won't have any more children to sacrifice to ensure a good harvest. Costs more than we make in several months too.

I'm still on SDTV. HDTV is nice and all, but keep in mind I only use my television for gaming and an occasional movie. I'm not going to go spend hundreds of dollars just so my games look slightly better.

And I haven't noticed any visual problems with my PS3 games yet.
