Alright, let me try and explain.

The big problem is crime and intimidation. I've lived within a mile of the local community all my life, and I dread the times when they try and pitch near to us. They carry illegal weapons and steal local livestock, and burglaries rocket. They shout abuse in the street, and if you confront them they're violent and usually end up vandalising your house in revenge. If they'd only be polite and considerate, then no one would care if they camped close by. But it is fact that every time they do, we end up unwilling to leave our own houses, scared of what they'll do next.

We end up fearing for our safety, and we really shouldn't have to live with it.

Just make sure you keep nothing expensive on show, other than that you can't really do anything. Some gypsies are actually good people, but obviously that isn't always the case. Just be weary and whatever you do, don't get on the wrong side of them. Around my way you get on the wrong side of a gypsy, you'll end up in a ditch.

You two are both American, maybe you've got a different type of gypsy in mind. Obviously these aren't Romany Gypsies, they're basically just the British equivalent of rednecks.

OT: My step dad runs his own garage, but rents it inside a yard owned by people that run a transport thing for school kids and stuff. There's also another guy that rents a garage on the other side of the yard.

Now, the guy who runs the other garage sometimes gets gypsies coming over to him asking him to "borrow" stuff. One time they asked him to borrow something (a mechanical wire thing to put on the car to pull other cars out of ditches or something I think) and he lent it too them.

Naturally, they came back another time asking them to borrow it. This time he said no - not wanting to get into a thing where he just lends it to them all the time, as he has it in the first place because he needs to use it - and the gypsy left. A few hours later, 2 younger guys came along saying he'd seriously upset their Dad. To sum it up, they then strongly implied that unless he gave them what they wanted they'd burn his garage down.

Anyway, they're probably not allowed to be there so call the police and they should move them on. Don't fucking lend them anything though.

They move around, set up camp where they're not allowed, pay no taxes, feed off of other people (they'll go through people's skips looking for scrap metal and stuff to sell) and it's also even difficult for them to be properly prosecuted because they have no fixed address.

And where did I say he was mean? They borrowed it once, then they came to borrow it again, he said they can't. They came back and said they'd burn down his workplace if he didn't.

Your moral compass is way off if you're seriously defending them. He's self-employed, he can't just lend his bloody equipment to people he doesn't even know whenever they want it; plus, because they're gypsies he knew they'd start taking the piss if he kept lending it to them.

All joking (as horrible as it was) aside, you should ignore them, but be wary. I'm guessing that your either worried for your personal safety, your property, or both. If they really start to make you uneasy, I'd report it to someone who might be able to get them to move somewhere else. Other than that, I'm not really sure how to help you. As a denizen of the Great White North, my gypsy-related experiences have been somewhat limited.

Having found out I'm 1/8 Gypsy a few months ago I 1/8 resent some of the comments made here (I'm not going to pretend to be something else but knowing it's part of my heritage and seeing this stuff... I think you get the idea, and I don't support any kind of racism in general of course). You should treat them like anyone else: if you see something illegal, report it, if you want them off your land, assuming it is your land, tell them to leave, if they don't, again, call the cops. I don't know where you live but it's clearly not a utopia so you should have already been locking your doors and had something to defend yourself with.

As far as I'm aware it's unowned land so there's not much I can do.

They are, at least in the sense most people think of since really there's only one sentient race here, the human race. They've been traced back to northern India, they left there a good few centuries ago, made their way west, and wound up in Europe, absorbing relatively little in the way of language, culture, and genetics once they got past the general area they came from.
